ਨਰ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਾਉ ॥ nar nihkayval nirbha-o naa-o. By meditating on God’s Name one becomes fearless and free from vices. ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਵਾਸਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥ ਕਰੇ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥ anaathah naath karay bal jaa-o. I dedicate myself to
ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਵੈ ॥ ha-umai banDhan banDh bhavaavai. Ego ties a person in bonds, and makes him wander in cycles of birth and death. ਹਉਮੈ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧੩॥ naanak raam bhagat sukh paavai. ||8||13|| O’ Nanak,
ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥ par ghar cheet manmukh dolaa-ay. A self conceited person’s mind craves for another’s wealth, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਾਏ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਡੁਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥ gal jayvree DhanDhai laptaa-ay. thus he is actually trapping himself in the web of vices. (ਨਤੀਜਾ ਇਹ
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੈਤ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥ doojai bhaa-ay dait sanghaaray. Because of the love of duality, God destroys the demons, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥ gurmukh saach bhagat nistaaray. ||8|| and ferries the Guru’s followers across the world-ocean of vices by yoking them to

ਪਹਿਰੈ ਬਾਗਾ ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨਾ ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਲਾਏ ॥ pahirai baagaa kar isnaanaa cho-aa chandan laa-ay. After bathing, one wears clean clothes and anoints himself with perfumes, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨ੍ਹਾ ਧੋ ਕੇ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਨਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤਰ ਤੇ ਚੰਦਨ ਆਦਿਕ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਨਹੀ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਹਸਤੀ ਨਾਵਾਏ ॥੩॥ nirbha-o nirankaar nahee cheeni-aa ji-o hastee naavaa-ay.
