There is one God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਕਲਰ ਖੇਤੀ ਤਰਵਰ ਕੰਠੇ ਬਾਗਾ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਕਜਲੁ ਝਰੈ ॥ kalar khaytee tarvar kanthay baagaa pahirahi kajal jharai. Just as no crop grows in a saline field, a plant on the river bank doesn’t survive for long, a person wearing white, doesn’t remain unstained where antimony is blowing, (ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਕੱਲਰ ਵਿਚ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜ ਕੇ ਫ਼ਸਲ
ਕਿਤੀ ਚਖਉ ਸਾਡੜੇ ਕਿਤੀ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇਉ ॥ kitee chakha-o saadrhay kitee vays karay-o. No matter, how many delicious dishes I may taste, and how many costly dresses I may wear, ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਰਹਾਂ, ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹਾਂ, کِتیِچکھءُساڈڑےکِتیِۄیسکریءُ کتی ۔ کتنے ہی ۔ چکھؤ ۔ چکھوں لطف اُٹھاوں
ਲਾਗੀ ਭੂਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਖਰੇ ॥੩॥ laagee bhookh maa-i-aa mag johai mukat padaarath mohi kharay. ||3|| Driven by hunger for worldly riches and power, a person keeps looking for ways to acquire them, and swayed by worldly attachments, he loses sight of salvation. ||3|| ਸਦਾ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਹੀ
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੂਅਰ ਤਾਪੈ ॥ antar agan na gur bin boojhai baahar poo-ar taapai. Without following the Guru’s teachings, his inner fire of worldly desires is not extinguished, but he burns fire outside (to ward off the evils). (ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ (ਬਲਦੀ)
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਏ ॥੭॥ gur sayvaa sadaa sukh hai jis no hukam manaa-ay. ||7|| Devotion to the Guru always brings inner peace, but he alone is blessed with it whom the Guru inspires to obey God’s command. ||7|| ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ,(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੀ
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਕਾਟੈ ਮਨ ਪੀਰਾ ॥੨॥ gur pooray saabaas hai kaatai man peeraa. ||2|| He hails the perfect Guru, who removes the pain of his heart. ||2|| ਉਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪੀੜ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥ گُرپوُرےساباسِہےَکاٹےَمنپیِرا من پیرا۔ دلی درد ۔ کامل مرشد
ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਵਤ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ DhanDhai Dhaavat jag baaDhi-aa naa boojhai veechaar. The world is so bound in worldly pursuits that it can not think about getting out of it. ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ) ਸੋਚ
ਹਰਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਾਰਾ ॥ har parhee-ai har bujhee-ai gurmatee naam uDhaaraa. We should read and understand God’s Name, because liberation from vices can be achieved only by devotedly meditating on Naam by following the Guru’s teachings. ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ maaroo mehlaa 5. Raag Maaroo, Fifth Mehl: مارۄُمحلا 5॥ ਵੈਦੋ ਨ ਵਾਈ ਭੈਣੋ ਨ ਭਾਈ ਏਕੋ ਸਹਾਈ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ vaido na vaa-ee bhaino na bhaa-ee ayko sahaa-ee raam hay. ||1|| The One Lord alone is our help and support; neither physician nor friend, nor sister nor brother can be this.
