Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
This shabad is an example of a prayer to God in complete humility: in those circumstances when we truly feel that we are being drowned in a sea of sufferings, and now only God can save us by holding out His hand to us.

ਭੁਜ ਬਲ ਬੀਰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਗਰਤ ਪਰਤ ਗਹਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਅੰਗੁਰੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

O Brave and Powerful God, Ocean of Peace, I fell into the pit – please, take my hand. ||1||Pause||

بھُج بل بیِر ب٘رہم سُکھ ساگر گرت پرت گہِ لیہُ انّگُریِیا ॥1॥ رہاءُ ॥
اے بہادر اور طاقت ور خدا ، بحرِ امن ، میں گڑھے میں گر گیا براہ کرم ، میرا لے جاناہاتھ ۔

sarvan na surat nain sundar nahee aarat du-aar ratat pinguree-aa. ||1||
My ears do not hear, and my eyes are not beautiful. I am in such pain; I am a poor cripple, crying at Your Door. ||1||

س٘رونِ ن سُرتِ نیَن سُنّدر نہی آرت دُیارِ رٹت پِنّگُریِیا ॥1॥
میرے کان نہیں سنتے ، اور میری آنکھیں خوبصورت نہیں ہیں۔ مجھے ایسی تکلیف ہے۔
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮੈ ਸਾਜਨ ਮੀਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਹਤਰੀਆ ॥
deenaa naath anaath karunaa mai saajan meet pitaa mahatree-aa.
O Master of the poor and helpless, O Embodiment of Compassion, You are my Friend and Intimate, my Father and Mother.
دیِنا ناتھ اناتھ کرُݨا مےَ ساجن میِت پِتا مہتریِیا ۔ ॥
میں ایک غریب معذور ، اپنے دروازے پر پکار رہا ہے۔

Nanak holds tight to the Lord’s Lotus Feet in his heart; thus the Saints cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||2||115||
O’ Nanak By holding fast to Your lotus feet (Humbly accepting your message and contemplating on Naam), Your saints have crossed the dreadful (worldly) ocean. (Please show mercy on me as well, and ferry me across also).
The message of this shabad is that no matter what hopeless situation we are in, we should pray to God in complete humility and surrender, and have full faith that He would protect us.

Without You, I cannot live, even for an instant, and my life in this world is cursed.

mohi nirgun mat thoree-aa tooN sad hee deen da-i-aal. ||2||
I am worthless, with such a shallow intellect; You are always Merciful to the meek. ||2||
مۄہِ نِرگُن متِ تھۄریِیا تۄُنّ سد ہی دیِن دئِیال ॥2॥
۔میں بے کار ہوں ، اتنی کم عقل سے۔ آپ ہمیشہ مسکینوں پر رحم کرتے ہیں۔

ki-aa sukh tayray sammlaa kavan biDhee beechaar.
What comforts of Yours can I dwell upon? How can I contemplate You?
کِیا سُکھ تیرے سنّملا کون بِدھی بیِچار ۔ ॥
میں آپ کی کیا راحتوں میں رہ سکتا ہوں؟ میں آپ کو کس طرح غور کرسکتا ہوں؟

saran samaa-ee daas hit oochay agam apaar. ||3||

sagal padaarath asat siDh naam mahaa ras maahi.

۔وہ عاجز مخلوق ، جن کے ساتھ خوبصورت بالوں والے رب خوب راضی ہوتے ہیں ، رب کی حمد گاتے ہیں۔

You are my mother, father, son and relative; You are the Support of the breath of life.
مات پِتا سُت بنّدھپۄ تۄُنّ میرے پ٘راݨ ادھار ॥
آپ میرے ماں ، باپ ، بیٹے اور رشتہ دار ہیں۔ آپ زندگی کی سانسوں کا سہارا ہیں۔

The message of this shabad is that not just in times of difficulty should we remember God, but we should always be thankful to Him for His blessings, and remember Him at all times like our dearest friend, father and relative. In this way we shall accomplish worldly objectives, and cross over the worldly ocean.

ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਰਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੋ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
hai ko-ee raam pi-aaro gaavai.
Is there anyone who will sing of the Beloved Lord?
Only a very rare lover of God who is singing about Him (with true love and devotion).
ہےَ کۄئی رام پِیارۄ گاوےَ ॥
:کیا کوئی ہے جو پیارے رب کا گانا گائے؟
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸੂਖ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sarab kali-aan sookh sach paavai. rahaa-o.
Surely, this will bring all pleasures and comforts. ||Pause||
Such a person, obtains all bliss and comforts, and obtains union with God. ||Pause||
سرب کلِیاݨ سۄُکھ سچُ پاوےَ ॥ رہاءُ ॥
یقینا اس سے ساری لذتیں اور راحتیں آئیں گی۔
ਬਨੁ ਬਨੁ ਖੋਜਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥

The renunciate goes out into the woods, searching for Him.
بنُ بنُ کھۄجت پھِرت بیَراگی ॥
اس کی تلاش میں جنگل میں نکلتا ہے
ਬਿਰਲੇ ਕਾਹੂ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
birlay kaahoo ayk liv laagee.
But those who embrace love for the One Lord are very rare.
But those who embrace love for the One God are very rare.
بِرلے کاہۄُ ایک لِو لاگی ॥
۔لیکن جو لوگ ایک ہی رب سے پیار کرتے ہیں وہ بہت کم ہوتے ہیں۔
ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੧॥
jin har paa-i-aa say vadbhaagee. ||1||
Those who find the Lord are very fortunate and blessed. ||1||

جِنِ ہرِ پائِیا سے وڈبھاگی ॥1॥
جو لوگ خداوند کو پاتے ہیں وہ بہت خوش قسمت اور مبارک ہیں۔
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿਕ ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ ਚਾਹੈ ॥

The Gods like Brahma and Sanak yearn for Him;
ب٘رہمادِک سنکادِک چاہےَ ॥
برہما اور سانک جیسے دیوتا اس کے لئے ترستے ہیں۔
ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਸਿਧ ਹਰਿ ਆਹੈ ॥
jogee jatee siDh har aahai.

جۄگی جتی سِدھ ہرِ آہےَ ॥
یوگی ، برہم اور سدھاس خداوند کے لئے ترستے ہیں۔
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੈ ॥੨॥
jisahi paraapat so har gun gaahai. ||2||
One who is so blessed, sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||

جِسہِ پراپتِ سۄ ہرِ گُݨ گاہےَ ॥2॥
جو بہت برکت والا ہے ، خداوند کی حمد گاتا ہے۔
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਜਿਨ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
taa kee saran jin bisrat naahee.
I seek the Sanctuary of those who have not forgotten Him.
تا کی سرݨِ جِن بِسرت ناہی ॥
میں ان لوگوں کی پناہ گاہ کو ڈھونڈتا ہوں جنہوں نے اسے فراموش نہیں کیا۔
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਾਹੀ ॥
vadbhaagee har sant milaahee.
By great good fortune, one meets the Lord’s Saint.
By great good fortune, one meets the Saintly person.
وڈبھاگی ہرِ سنّت مِلاہی ॥
بڑی خوش قسمتی سے ، ایک لارڈ سینٹ سے ملتا ہے۔
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਤਿਹ ਮੂਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੩॥
janam maran tih moolay naahee. ||3||
They are not subject to the cycle of birth and death. ||3||
جنم مرݨ تِہ مۄُلے ناہی ॥3॥
وہ پیدائش اور موت کے چکر سے مشروط نہیں ہیں۔
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮਿਲੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

Show Your Mercy, and lead me to meet You, O my Darling Beloved.
کرِ کِرپا مِلُ پ٘ریِتم پِیارے ۔ ॥
اپنی رحمت کا مظاہرہ کریں ، اور اے میرے پیارے محبوب ، مجھے آپ سے ملنے کی رہنمائی کریں۔
ਬਿਨਉ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਊਚ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥
bin-o sunhu parabh ooch apaaray.
Hear my prayer, O Lofty and Infinite God;
بِنءُ سُنہُ پ٘ربھ اۄُچ اپارے ۔ ॥
اے بلند و لامحدود خدا ، میری دعا سنو۔
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਂਗਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੧੭॥

The message of this shabad is that if we want union with the infinite God, then join the company of saintly persons. Contemplate on his Naam and sing His praises with true love and devotion.
