ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੈ ਝੂਠੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
mukh jhoothai jhooth bolnaa ki-o kar soochaa ho-ay.
How can a person be of pure mind who always speaks falsehood ?
Mtu atawezaje kuwa mwenye akili safi iwapo anazungumza uongo?
ਬਿਨੁ ਅਭ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਮਾਂਜੀਐ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
bin abh sabad na maaNjee-ai saachay tay sach ho-ay. ||1||
Without the holy water of Guru’s word, the mind cannot be cleaned or purified. From the True One alone comes truth.
Bila maji takatifu ya neno la Guru, akili haiwezi kusafishwa wala kutakaswa. Kutoka yule Mmoja wa kweli pekee ndio kunatoka ukweli.
ਮੁੰਧੇ ਗੁਣਹੀਣੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਕੇਹਿ ॥
munDhay gunheenee sukh kayhi.
O soul-bride, without virtue, what happiness can there be?
Ee roho kama bi harusi, bila fadhila, kunaweza kuwa na furaha gani?
ਪਿਰੁ ਰਲੀਆ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਣਸੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਨੇਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pir ralee-aa ras maansee saach sabad sukh nayhi. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Only that soul-bride will enjoy the spiritual pleasure of union with God who is at peace through the love of the Guru’s word.
Roho kama bi harusi pekee ambaye atafurahia raha ya kiroho ya muungano na Mungu ni yule ambaye yu katika amani kupitia upendo kwa neno la Guru.
ਪਿਰੁ ਪਰਦੇਸੀ ਜੇ ਥੀਐ ਧਨ ਵਾਂਢੀ ਝੂਰੇਇ ॥
pir pardaysee jay thee-ai Dhan vaaNdhee jooray-ay.
If God (the groom) does not dwell in the soul-bride’s heart, the separated soul-bride grieves.
Iwapo Mungu (bwana harusi) haishi moyoni mwa roho kama bi harusi, roho kama bi harusi anahuzunika.
ਜਿਉ ਜਲਿ ਥੋੜੈ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
ji-o jal thorhai machhulee karan palaav karay-i.
She wails in pain, like a fish in shallow water.
Analia kwa uchungu, kama samaki katika maji ya juujuu.
ਪਿਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਾ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੨॥
pir bhaavai sukh paa-ee-ai jaa aapay nadar karay-i. ||2||
Spiritual solace is obtained when it pleases God and He himself is benevolent.
Faraja ya kiroho inapokelewa wakati unaopendeza Mungu na Yeye mwenyewe ni mwema.
ਪਿਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
pir saalaahee aapnaa sakhee sahaylee naal.
O’ soul-bride, praise God (your groom), in the holy congregation of your friends.
Ee roho kama bi harusi, sifu Mungu (bwana harusi wako), katika ushirika takatifu wa marafiki wako.
ਤਨਿ ਸੋਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਰਤੀ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥
tan sohai man mohi-aa ratee rang nihaal.
Then your body will become beautiful, your mind will be fascinated, and being imbued with His love you would behold Him.
Kisha mwili wako utakuwa mrembo, akili yako itavutiwa, na kwa kujawa na upendo wake utamtazama Mungu.
ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੩॥
sabad savaaree sohnee pir raavay gun naal. ||3||
Adorned with the Guru’s word and her virtues, the beautiful soul-bride enjoys the company of her groom (God).
Akipambwa na neno la Guru na fadhila zake, roho kama bi harusi mrembo anafurahia kukaa na bwana harusi wake (Mungu).
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਖੋਟੀ ਅਵਗਣਿਆਰਿ ॥
kaaman kaam na aavee khotee avgani-aar.
The human life, of an evil soul-bride without any virtues, is wasted in vain.
Maisha ya kibinadamu, ya roho kama bi harusi muovu bila fadhila zozote, inaharibiwa bure.
ਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪੇਈਐ ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਝੂਠਿ ਜਲੀ ਵੇਕਾਰਿ ॥
naa sukh pay-ee-ai saahurai jhooth jalee vaykaar.
She does not find any peace in this world or in God’s court; she burns (wastes her spiritual life) in falsehood and vices.
Yeye hapati amani yoyote duniani humu ama katika mahakama ya Mungu; anachomeka (kuharibu maisha yake ya kiroho) katika udanganyifu na maovu.
ਆਵਣੁ ਵੰਞਣੁ ਡਾਖੜੋ ਛੋਡੀ ਕੰਤਿ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥੪॥
aavan vanjan daakh-rho chhodee kant visaar. ||4||
Forgotten and abandoned by the groom (God), she is consigned to the torturous cycle of birth and death.(
Akisahaulika na kuachwa na bwana harusi wake (Mungu), anatumwa kwa mzunguko wa kuzaliwa na kufa wenye mateso.
ਪਿਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਮੁਤੀ ਸੋ ਕਿਤੁ ਸਾਦਿ ॥
pir kee naar suhaavanee mutee so kit saad.
She used to be the beautiful soul bride of her groom (God). Due to what bad habits has she been deserted?
Wakati mmoja alikuwa roho kama bi harusi mrembo wa bwana harusi wake (Mungu). Aliachwa kutokana na tabia gani mbaya?
ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਬੋਲੇ ਫਾਦਿਲੁ ਬਾਦਿ ॥
pir kai kaam na aavee bolay faadil baad.
Because the soul-bride indulges in worthless arguments which is of no use for attaining union with the groom-God.
Kwa sababu roho kama bi harusi anajishughulisha na magombezano bure ambayo haina manufaa kwa kupata muungano na bwana harusi (Mungu).
ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹੈ ਛੂਟੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਸਾਦਿ ॥੫॥
dar ghar dho-ee naa lahai chhootee doojai saad. ||5||
Such a soul-bride who is attracted to other worldly pleasures is deserted and finds no shelter at God’s court.
Roho kama bi harusi kama huyo ambaye anavutiwa na raha za kidunia nyingine anaachwa na hapati makao yoyote katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵਾਚਹਿ ਪੋਥੀਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
pandit vaacheh pothee-aa naa boojheh veechaar.
The Pandits, read their books but they do not understand the real essence.
Walimu wenye busara, wanasoma vitabu vyao lakini hawaelewi kiini cha kweli.
ਅਨ ਕਉ ਮਤੀ ਦੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
an ka-o matee day chaleh maa-i-aa kaa vaapaar.
After preaching to others they depart from this world, because for them preaching is a business to earn wealth.
Baada ya kuhubiria wengine wanaondoka kutoka dunia hii, kwa sababu kwao kuhubiri ni biashara ya kupata utajiri.
ਕਥਨੀ ਝੂਠੀ ਜਗੁ ਭਵੈ ਰਹਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
kathnee jhoothee jag bhavai rahnee sabad so saar. ||6||
Indulged in false talks, the entire world keeps wandering around. That living alone is sublime which is in accordance with Guru’s word.
Ikijishughulisha na maongezi ya uongo, dunia nzima inaendelea kuzurura kote. Kuishi pekee ambako ni tukufu ambako ni kulingana na neno la Guru.
ਕੇਤੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਬੇਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
kaytay pandit jotkee baydaa karahi beechaar.
There are so many Pandits and astrologers who ponder over the Vedas.
Kuna walimu wa busara na wanajimu wengi wanaotafakari kuhusu Vedas.
ਵਾਦਿ ਵਿਰੋਧਿ ਸਲਾਹਣੇ ਵਾਦੇ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
vaad viroDh salaahnay vaaday aavan jaan.
They glorify their disputes and arguments, and in these controversies they continue in the cycle of birth and death.
Wanasifu mabishano na majadiliano yao, na katika utata huu wanaendelea katika mzunguko wa kuzaliwa na kufa.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਛੁਟਸੀ ਕਹਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੁ ॥੭॥
bin gur karam na chhutsee kahi sun aakh vakhaan. ||7||
Without following the Guru’s teachings, they cannot be absolved from the consequences of their deeds, no matter how much they say, hear and explain.
Bila kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, hawawezi kusamehewa matokeo ya vitendo vyao, haijalishi kiasi gani wanasema, sikia au kueleza.
ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਮੈ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
sabh gunvantee aakhee-ahi mai gun naahee ko-ay.
All other soul brides (who are pleasing to God) are called virtuous, but I have no virtue at all.
Roho kama bi harusi wote wengine (ambao wanamfurahisha Mungu) wanaitwa wema, lakini mimisina fadhila hata kidogo.
ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
har var naar suhaavanee mai bhaavai parabh so-ay.
If I also start feeling love for God, I too shall become His beautiful virtuous bride.
Iwapo pia mimi nianze kuhisi upendo kwa Mungu, mimi pia nitakuwa bi harusi wake mrembo na mwema.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੜਾ ਨਾ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak sabad milaavrhaa naa vaychhorhaa ho-ay. ||8||5||
O’ Nanak, through the Guru’s word, union with God is obtained; and after that there is no more separation from Him.
Ee Nanak, kupitia neno la Guru, muungano na Mungu unapatwa; na baada ya hayo hakuna utengano tena kutoka kwake.

jap tap sanjam saaDhee-ai tirath keechai vaas.
One may chant and meditate, practice austerities and self-restraint, and dwell at sacred shrines of pilgrimage;
Mtu anaweza kuimba na kutafakari, kutenda nidhamu kali ya kidini na kujizuia, na kuishi katika ziara takatifu za hija
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਿਆ ਤਾਸੁ ॥
punn daan chang-aa-ee-aa bin saachay ki-aa taas.
he may give donations to charity, and perform good deeds, but without the True One, what is the use of it all?
Anaweza kutoa kwa hisani, na kutenda vitendo vizuri, lakini bila yule Mmoja wa kweli, kuna manufaa gani ya hayo yote?
ਜੇਹਾ ਰਾਧੇ ਤੇਹਾ ਲੁਣੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਜਨਮੁ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
jayhaa raaDhay tayhaa lunai bin gun janam vinaas. ||1||
As you sow, so shall you harvest. Without virtues, this human life is useless.
Unavyopanda, ndivyo utakavyovuna. Bila fadhila, maisha haya ya kibinadamu ni bure.
ਮੁੰਧੇ ਗੁਣ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
munDhay gun daasee sukh ho-ay.
O’ innocent soul-bride, peace is obtained by acquiringspiritual virtues.
Ee roho kama bi harusi usiye na hatia, amani inapokelewa kwa kupata fadhila za kiroho.
ਅਵਗਣ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
avgan ti-aag samaa-ee-ai gurmat pooraa so-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Renouncing vices, following the Guru’s Teachings, you shall be absorbed into the Perfect One.
Kukataa dhambi, kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, utaunganishwa na yule Mmoja aliye kamili.
ਵਿਣੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਆ ਤਕੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
vin raasee vapaaree-aa takay kundaa chaar.
Just as without capital, the trader looks around in all four directions (and does not reap any profit).
Kama vile bila rasilimali, mfanyabiashara anatafuta katika pande zote nne (na hazalishi faida yoyote).
ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਰਹੀ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਿ ॥
mool na bujhai aapnaa vasat rahee ghar baar.
(Similarly without the capital of Naam), one who does not realize one’s own real essence, his true capital (God’s Name) remains hidden within his heart.
(Sawia bila rasilimali ya Naam), mtu ambaye hagundui kiini chake cha kweli, rasilimali yake ya kweli (Jina la Mungu) inabaki inefichwa moyoni mwake.
ਵਿਣੁ ਵਖਰ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਿ ॥੨॥
vin vakhar dukh aglaa koorh muthee koorhi-aar. ||2||
Without the commodity of Naam, there is great pain and the false bride is deceived by falsehood.
Bila bidhaa ya Naam, kuna uchungu mkuu na bi harudi bandia anadanganywa na uongo.
ਲਾਹਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਉਤਨਾ ਪਰਖੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
laahaa ahinis na-otanaa parkhay ratan veechaar.
One who contemplates and appraises this Jewel of Naam day and night, reaps the profits of spiritual bliss.
Yule ambaye anatafakari na kuthamini johari ya Naam mchana na usiku, anapata faida ya furaha tele ya kiroho.
ਵਸਤੁ ਲਹੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਚਲੈ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਾਰਿ ॥
vasat lahai ghar aapnai chalai kaaraj saar.
He finds the Creator within his heart , and departs successfully after accomplishing the purpose of human life.
Anapata Muumba moyoni mwake, na kuondoka kwa mafanikio baada ya kutimiza kusudi ya maisha ya kibinadamu.
ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
vanjaari-aa si-o vanaj kar gurmukh barahm beechaar. ||3||
O’ my friend,Trade with the saintly persons (who trade in God’s Name) and through the Guru contemplate on the all pervading God.
Ee rafiki yangu, fanya biashara na watu watakatifu (wanaofanya biashara ya Jina la Mungu) na kupitia Guru tafakari kuhusu Mungu anayeenea kote.
ਸੰਤਾਂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
santaaN sangat paa-ee-ai jay maylay maylanhaar.
If God Himself unites us with saintly persons, we obtain the capital of God’s Name in their company.
Iwapo Mungu mwenyewe atuunganishe na watu watakatifu, tunapata rasilimali ya Jina la Mungu katika hudhurio yao.
ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
mili-aa ho-ay na vichhurhai jis antar jot apaar.
Once a person, whose heart is filled with the light of infinite God, is united with God. That person shall never again be separated from Him.
Wakati mtu, ambaye moyo wake umejawa na mwanga wa Mungu asiye na mwisho, anaunganishwa na Mungu, mtu huyo kamwe hatatenganishwa tena kutoka kwa Mungu.
ਸਚੈ ਆਸਣਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਚੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰ ॥੪॥
sachai aasan sach rahai sachai paraym pi-aar. ||4||
He remains attuned to the eternal God through true love and devotion.
Anabaki amemakinikia Mungu wa milele kupitia upendo na kujitolea kwa kweli.
ਜਿਨੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥
jinee aap pachhaani-aa ghar meh mahal suthaa-ay.
They who have recognized their true self, found God’s presence in their heart.
Wale ambao wametambua nafsi yao wenyewe, wamepaya uwepo wa Mungu mioyoni mwao.
ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਸਚੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
sachay saytee rati-aa sacho palai paa-ay.
Imbued with God’s love, they realize the Eternal Truth (God)
Wakijawa na upendo wa Mungu, wanagundua Ukweli wa Milele (Mungu)
