ਕਬ ਚੰਦਨਿ ਕਬ ਅਕਿ ਡਾਲਿ ਕਬ ਉਚੀ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥
kab chandan kab ak daal kab uchee pareet.
As if it sometimes sits on the sandalwood tree, other times it is on the branch of the swallow-wort. Sometimes, it soars high in God’s love.
Kana kwamba wakati mwingine inakalia mti wa misandali, wakati mwingine ipo katika tawi la woti la kumeza. Wakti mwingine, inapepea juu katika upendo wa Mungu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲਗੀ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੨॥
naanak hukam chalaa-ee-ai saahib lagee reet. ||2||
O’ Nanak, this is the tradition from the very beginning, that it is God who makes all the creatures behave according to His command.
Ee Nanak, hii ndiyo desturi kutoka mwanzoni kabisa, ya kwamba ni Mungu anayefanya viumbe vyote vitende kulingana na amri yake.

ਕੇਤੇ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਾਣ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥
kaytay kaheh vakhaan kahi kahi jaavnaa.
Many have departed from the world after delivering discourses about God.
Wengi wameondoka duniani humu baada ya kutoa hotuba kuhusu Mungu.

ਵੇਦ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥
vayd kaheh vakhi-aan ant na paavnaa.
They deliver lectures and expound on the virtues of God through the Vedas, but still are not able to find His limits.
Wanatoa mihadhara na kueleza kuhusu fadhila za Mungu kupitia Vedas, lakini bado hawawezi kupata vikomo vyake.

ਪੜਿਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਬੁਝਿਐ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥
parhi-ai naahee bhayd bujhi-ai paavnaa.
It is through spiritual knowledge and not by just reading the scriptures, one understands this fact, that God is infinite.
Ni kupitia maarifa ya kiroho na sio tu kwa kusoma maandisho, ambapo mtu anaelewa ukweli huu, ya kwamba Mungu hana mwisho.

ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਭੇਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਾ ॥
khat darsan kai bhaykh kisai sach sam
No one can merge in the eternal God by merely adopting the garbs mentioned in Shastras (the Hindu holy books).
Hakuna mtu anaweza kuungana na Mungu wa milele kwa kuvaa mavazi yaliyotajwa katika Shastras (vitabu takatifu cha Kihindu)

ਸਚਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ॥
sachaa purakh alakh sabad suhaavanaa.
The eternal God is unfathomable, but revealed through the Guru’s word, He (His manifestation) looks beautiful.
Mungu wa milele hawezi kufahamika, ila anadhihirishwa kupitia neno la Guru, Yeye (udhihirisho wake) unakaa vizuri.

ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਬਿਸੰਖ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥
mannay naa-o bisankh dargeh paavnaa.
One who believes in the Name of the Infinite God, reaches His Court.
Yule ambaye anasadiki Jina la Mungu asiye na mwisho, anafika kwa Mahakama yake.

ਖਾਲਕ ਕਉ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਢਾਢੀ ਗਾਵਣਾ ॥
khaalak ka-o aadays dhaadhee gaavnaa.
He humbly bows to the Creator; and as a minstrel sings His Praises.
Anasujudu kwa unyenyekevu mbele ya Muumba; na kama mwimbaji anaimba sifa za Mungu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਾ ॥੨੧॥
naanak jug jug ayk man vasaavnaa.||21||
and O’ Nanak, he enshrines the One (God) in his mind, Who has been therethroughout the ages.
Na Ee Nanak, anathamini yule Mmoja (Mungu) akilini mwake, Ambaye amekuwepo kupitia enzi zote.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੨ ॥

Shalok, by the Second Guru:
Shalok, na Guru wa Pili:

ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੋਇ ਅਠੂਹਿਆ ਨਾਗੀ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
mantree ho-ay athoohi-aa naagee lagai jaa-ay.
If one only knew how to charm (handle) scorpions and he tries to handle snakes,
Iwapo mtu angejua tu jinsi ya kuvutia (kutunza) nge na ajaribu kutunza nyoka,

ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀ ਆਪਣੈ ਦੇ ਕੂਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ॥
aapan hathee aapnai day koochaa aapay laa-ay.
(that person is most likely to be bitten by the snake). He is like the one, who sets oneself on fire with one’s own hands.
(kuna uwezekano mkubwa mtu huyo ataumwa na huyo nyoka). Yeye ni kama yule, anayewasha moto kwa mwili wake kwa mikono yake mwenyewe.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਇਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਅਤੀ ਹੂ ਧਕਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
hukam pa-i-aa Dhur khasam kaa atee hoo Dhakaa khaa-ay.
This is the pre-ordained command of God: that anybody who goes to extremes suffers a big setback.
Hii ni amri ya Mungu iliyoagiziwa mapema: ya kwamba yeyote anafanya mambo kupita kiasi anapata kizuizi kikubwa.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਿਉ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅੜੈ ਡੁਬੈ ਹਕਿ ਨਿਆਇ ॥
gurmukh si-o manmukh arhai dubai hak ni-aa-ay.
If a self-willed person clashes with a Guru’s follower, in accordance with the true justice of God, that person is drowned in the worldly ocean of vices.
Mtu mwenye hiari binafsi anagongana na mfuasi wa Guru, kulingana na haki halisi ya Mungu, mtu huyo anazamishwa katika bahari ya kidunia ya dhambi.

ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਆਪੇ ਖਸਮੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਉਪਾਇ ॥
duhaa siri-aa aapay khasam vaykhai kar vi-upaa-ay.
He Himself is the Master of both the Manmuks and the Gurmukhs. He beholds all and makes the exact determination.
Yeye mwenyewe ni Bwana wa Manmukhs na Gurmukhs. Yeye anatazama yote na kutoa uamuzi sahihi.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak ayvai jaanee-ai sabh kichh tiseh rajaa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, understand that everything is happening according to His Will.||1||
Ee Nanak, elewa ya kwamba kila kitu kinatendeka kulingana na Mapenzi yake. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੇ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਤਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
naanak parkhay aap ka-o taa paarakh jaan.
O’ Nanak, (instead of judging others) if someone judges himself, only then is he known as a real judge.
Ee Nanak, (badala ya kuwahukumu wengine) iwapo mtu ajihukumu, wakati huo tu ndio anajulikana kama hakimu halisi.

ਰੋਗੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਦੋਵੈ ਬੁਝੈ ਤਾ ਵੈਦੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥
rog daaroo dovai bujhai taa vaid sujaan.
Instead of finding vices in others, if a person recognizes his own vices and way to eradicate them, is truly a wise person.
Badala ya kupata maovu kwa wengine, iwapo mtu atambue maovu yake mwenyewe na njia ya kuyaangamiza, kwa kweli ni mtu mwenye busara.

ਵਾਟ ਨ ਕਰਈ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ ॥
vaat na kar-ee maamlaa jaanai mihmaan.
The wise person does not get involved in any unnecessary things in life, knowing that he is only a guest in this world.
Mtu mwenye busara hajihusishi na vitu visivyofaa maishani, akijua ya kwamba yeye ni mgeni tu duniani humu.

ਮੂਲੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਕਰੇ ਹਾਣਿ ਲਾਏ ਹਾਣੁ ॥
mool jaan galaa karay haan laa-ay haan.
With deep understanding and devotion for God, he spends his time in the holy congregation.
Kwa uelewa na kujitolea kwa kina kwa Mungu, anatumia wakati wake katika ushirika takatifu.

ਲਬਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਟੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
lab na chal-ee sach rahai so visat parvaan.
That virtuous person who does not indulge in greed, and who abides in Truth, is acceptedas a benefactor to others.
Mtu mwema ambaye hajihusishi katika tamaa, na anayeishi kwa Ukweli, anakubalika kama mfadhili kwa wengine.

ਸਰੁ ਸੰਧੇ ਆਗਾਸ ਕਉ ਕਿਉ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਬਾਣੁ ॥
sar sanDhay aagaas ka-o ki-o pahuchai baan.
When a Manmukh tries to impose his evil thoughts on a Gurmukh, it is like shooting an arrow in the sky that cannot reach the destination.
Wakati Manmukh anajaribu kupachika fikira zake mbaya kwa Gurmukh, ni kama kupiga mshale angani ambao hauwezi kufika mahali.

ਅਗੈ ਓਹੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਵਾਹੇਦੜੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
agai oh agamm hai vaahaydarh jaan.||2||
The evil thoughts cannot influence the Gurmukh, instead, the Manmukh becomes a prey to his own evil thoughts.
Fikira hizo mbaya haziwezi kushawishi Gurmukh, badala yake, Manmukh anaathiriwa na fikira mbaya zake mwenyewe.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਨਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੀਆ ॥
naaree purakh pi-aar paraym seegaaree-aa.
The bride-souls who loves their Master-God; are embellished with His Love.
Roho kama bi harusi wanaopenda Bwana-Mungu wao; wanapambwa na Upendo wake.

ਕਰਨਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਨ ਰਹਨੀ ਵਾਰੀਆ ॥
karan bhagat din raat na rahnee vaaree-aa.
They worships Him day and night, and cannot be restrained from doing so.
Wanamuabudu mchana na usiku, na hawawezi kuzuiliwa kutoka kufanya hivyo.

ਮਹਲਾ ਮੰਝਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਆ ॥
mehlaa manjh nivaas sabad savaaree-aa.
Embellished by the Guru’s word, they are peaceful as if dwelling in the palaces.
Wakipambwa na neno la Guru, wamo na amani kana kwamba wanaishi kwa majumba.

ਸਚੁ ਕਹਨਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਸੇ ਵੇਚਾਰੀਆ ॥
sach kahan ardaas say vaychaaree-aa.
Those humble ones always make a truly sincere prayer.
Wale wanyenyekevu daima wanatoa sala nyoofu kwa kweli.

ਸੋਹਨਿ ਖਸਮੈ ਪਾਸਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੀਆ ॥
sohan khasmai paas hukam siDhaaree-aa.
They have reached God’s court according to His command, and look beautiful sitting besides Him.
Wamefikia mahakama ya Mungu kulingana na amri yake, na wanakaa vizuri wakiketi kando yake.

ਸਖੀ ਕਹਨਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਮਨਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੀਆ ॥
sakhee kahan ardaas manhu pi-aaree-aa.
They pray to God in a very intimate friendly manner, and they love Him from the core of their hearts.
Wanasali kwa Mungu kwa mtindo wa urafiki wa karibu, na wanampenda kutoka kiini cha mioyo yao.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਵਾਸੁ ਫਿਟੁ ਸੁ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥
bin naavai Dharig vaas fit so jeevi-aa.
Cursed is that home, and shameful is that life, which is without Naam.
Imelaaniwa nyumba hiyo, na ya aibu ni maisha hayo, ambayo hayana Naam.

ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਆਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਿਆ ॥੨੨॥
sabad savaaree-aas amrit peevi-aa. ||22||
Only those who have been embellished by God through the Guru’s word have partaken of the Nectar of God’s Name.
Ni wale tu ambao wamepambwa na Mungu kupitia neno la Guru ambao wameshiriki Nekta ya Jina la Mungu.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਮਾਰੂ ਮੀਹਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਅਗੀ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਭੁਖ ॥
maaroo meehi na taripti-aa agee lahai na bhukh.
The desert is not satisfied by any amount of rain, the hunger of fire to burn is not satisfied by any amount of wood or fuel.
Jangwa haliridhishwi na kiwango chochote cha mvua, njaa ya moto ya kuchoma hairidhishwi na kiwango chochote cha kuni ama fueli.

ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਜਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਸਾਇਰ ਭਰੇ ਕਿਸੁਕ ॥
raajaa raaj na taripti-aa saa-ir bharay kisuk.
The king is never satisfied with the extent of his domain, and who has ever filled the ocean?
Mfalme kamwe haridhishwi na kadiri ya eneo lake, na nani amewahi kujaza bahari?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਕੇਤੀ ਪੁਛਾ ਪੁਛ ॥੧॥
naanak sachay naam kee kaytee puchhaa puchh.||1||
O’ Nanak, the craving for God’s Name in the minds of the devotees is so great that it cannot be described.
Ee Nanak, tamaa ya Jina la Mungu akilini mwa watawa ni kuu hadi haiwezi kuelezwa.

ਮਹਲਾ ੨ ॥

Shalok, na Guru wa Pili:

ਨਿਹਫਲੰ ਤਸਿ ਜਨਮਸਿ ਜਾਵਤੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨ ਬਿੰਦਤੇ ॥
nihfalaN tas janmas jaavat barahm na bindtay.
The human birth of a person who does not realize God goes to waste.
Kuzaliwa kwa ubinadamu kwa mtu siyegundua Mungu ni bure.

ਸਾਗਰੰ ਸੰਸਾਰਸਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਰਹਿ ਕੇ ॥
saagraN sansaaras gur parsaadee tareh kay.
Only a few cross over the world-ocean of vices, by the Guru’s Grace.
Ni wachache sana wanaovuka bahari-dunia ya dhambi, kwa Neema ya Guru.

ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
karan kaaran samrath hai kaho naanak beechaar.
God is the All-powerful Cause of causes, says Nanak after deep deliberation.
Mungu ni mwenye nguvu zote na sababu ya misingi yote, asema Nanaka baada ya kujadili kwa kina.

ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਲ ਰਖੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
kaaran kartay vas hai jin kal rakhee Dhaar. ||2||
The creation is under the control of the Creator, who sustains it by His Almighty Power.
Uumbaji upo chini ya udhibiti wa Muumba, anayeutunza kwa Nguvu zake kuu.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥
pa-orhee.
Pauree:

ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ਢਾਢੀ ਵਸਿਆ ॥
khasmai kai darbaar dhaadhee vasi-aa.
In the Court of the Master, His minstrel dwells.
Katika Mahakama ya Bwana, mwimbaji wake anaishi.

ਸਚਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਕਲਾਣਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ॥
sachaa khasam kalaan kamal vigsi-aa.
Singing the Praises of the eternal God, he remains delighted.
Akiimba Sifa za Mungu wa milele, anabaki amefurahi.

ਖਸਮਹੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇ ਮਨਹੁ ਰਹਸਿਆ ॥
khasmahu pooraa paa-ay manhu rehsi-aa.
By receiving full approval from the Master, he feels blessed in his mind.
Kwa kupokea kibali kamilifu kutoka kwa Bwana, anahisi amebarikiwa akilini mwake.

ਦੁਸਮਨ ਕਢੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਜਣ ਸਰਸਿਆ ॥
dusman kadhay maar sajan sarsi-aa.
He drives out his enemies (vices) and his friends (the sensory organs) become very happy.
Anafukuza maadui wake (maovu) na marafiki wake (viungo vya hisi) wanafurahia.

ਸਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਚਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦਸਿਆ ॥
sachaa satgur sayvan sachaa maarag dasi-aa.
Now his faculties (sensory organs) start following the teachings of the true Guru, who shows them the righteous path of life.
Sasa vitivo vyake (viungo vya hisi) vinaanza kufuata mafundisho ya Guru wa kweli, anayewaonyesha njia ya haki ya maisha.
