ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਤੁਮ ਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨ ਅਵਰੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
aap beechaar maar man daykhi-aa tum saa meet na avar ko-ee.
O’ God, when with a disciplined mind (free of vices) I reflected upon myself, I realized that there is no better friend than You.
Ee Mungu, wakati kwa akili yenye nidhamu (huru kutoka maovu) nilitafakari kuhusu nafsi yangu, niligundua kwamba hakuna rafiki mzuri zaidi ya Wewe.

ਜਿਉ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਵ ਹੀ ਰਹਣਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
ji-o tooN raakhahi tiv hee rahnaa dukh sukh dayveh karahi so-ee. ||3||
Howsoever You keep me I have to live accordingly. It is You who are the giver of pain or pleasure and whatever You do, comes to pass. ||3||
Kwa njia yoyote ambayo unaniweka lazima niishi vivyo hivyo. Ni Wewe ambaye ni mpaji wa uchungu na raha na chochote unachofanya, kinatendeka.

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਦੋਊ ਬਿਨਾਸਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਭਈ ॥
aasaa mansaa do-oo binaasat tarihu gun aas niraas bha-ee.
By following the Guru’s teachings, worldly hopes and desires are dispelled and one can remain detached from the three traits (vice virtue and power) of Maya.
Kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, matumaini na raha za kidunia zinaondolewa na mtu anaweza kubaki amejitenga kutoka tabia tatu (dhambi, fadhila na nguvu) za Maya.

ਤੁਰੀਆਵਸਥਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਲਹੀ ॥੪॥
turee-aavasthaa gurmukh paa-ee-ai sant sabhaa kee ot lahee. ||4||
The follower of the Guru attains the supreme spiritual state of mind by seeking refuge in the congregation of the saints||4||

ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਸਗਲੇ ਸਭਿ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥
gi-aan Dhi-aan saglay sabh jap tap jis har hirdai alakh abhayvaa.
One, in whose heart dwells the invisible and incomprehensible God, attains all the merits of divine knowledge, meditation and penance.
Yule, ambaye moyoni mwake mnaishi Mungu asiyeonekana na asiyeeleweka, anapata sifa zote za maarifa takatifu, utafakari na toba.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ਸਹਜ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੫॥੨੨॥
naanak raam naam man raataa gurmat paa-ay sahj sayvaa. ||5||22||
O’ Nanak, by following the Guru’s teachings, the mind is imbued with God’s Name and intuitively meditates on God. ||5||22||

ਮੋਹੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭ ਕਾਰ ॥
moh kutamb moh sabh kaar.
Emotional bonds to the family provides motivation to run after worldly affairs.
Vifungo vya kihisia kwa familia yanatoa hamasisho ya kufukuza shughuli za kidunia.

ਮੋਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਤਜਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥੧॥
moh tum tajahu sagal vaykaar. ||1||
You should renounce all emotional attachments because they lead to evils. ||1||
Unapaswa kukana viambatisho vyote vya kihisia kwa sababu zinaongoza kwa maovu.

ਮੋਹੁ ਅਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਬੀਰ ॥
moh ar bharam tajahu tumH beer.
O’ brother, renounce your worldly attachments and doubts,
Ee ndugu, kana viambatisho na shaka zako za kidunia,

ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੇ ਰਵੈ ਸਰੀਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saach naam riday ravai sareer. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One can meditate on the eternal God’s Name only after renouncing the worldly attachments. ||1||Pause||
Mtu anaweza tu kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu wa milele baada ya kukana viambatisho vya kidunia. ||1||Sitisha||

ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
sach naam jaa nav niDh paa-ee.
When one realizes God’s Name which is like all the nine treasures of the world,
Wakati mtu anagundua Jina la Mungu ambalo ni kama hazina zote tisa za dunia,

ਰੋਵੈ ਪੂਤੁ ਨ ਕਲਪੈ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥
rovai poot na kalpai maa-ee. ||2||
then neither the son (mind) cries nor the mother (intellect) grieves. ||2||
basi mwana (akili) halii wala mama (uwekevu) kuomboleza.

ਏਤੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਡੂਬਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
ayt mohi doobaa sansaar.
The entire world is so obsessed with worldly attachments, as if it is drowned in its vast ocean.
Dunia mzima imevutiwa mno na viambatisho vya kidunia, kana kwamba imezama katika bahari yake kubwa.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਉਤਰੈ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
gurmukh ko-ee utrai paar. ||3||
Only a rare Guru’s follower is able to swim across the ocean of Maya. ||3||
Mfuasi nadra pekee wa Guru anaweza kuogelea akivuka bahari ya Maya.

ਏਤੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
ayt mohi fir joonee paahi.
Entangled in attachments, you would be reincarnated over and over again.
Kwa kunaswa katika viambatisho, utazaliwa upya katika umwilisho tena na tena.

ਮੋਹੇ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੪॥
mohay laagaa jam pur jaahi. ||4||
Entangled in emotional attachment, you would face the demon of Death. ||4||
Kwa kunaswa katika kiambatisho cha kihisia, utakabiliana na pepo wa Kifo.

ਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੇ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
gur deekhi-aa lay jap tap kamaahi.
Obtaining instruction from worldly gurus, people do ritual worship and penance,
Wakipokea maagizo kutoka guru wa kidunia, watu wanafanya ibada ya mila na toba.

ਨਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਤੂਟੈ ਨਾ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੫॥
naa moh tootai naa thaa-ay paahi. ||5||
their emotional attachment does not end with these rituals and they are not approved in God’s court. ||5||
kiambatisho chao cha kihisia hakitamatiki na mila hizo na hawaidhinishwi katika mahakama ya Mungu.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਏਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
nadar karay taa ayhumoh jaa-ay.
If God bestows His Glance of Grace then this emotional attachment ends,
Iwapo Mungu atawaze Mtazamo wake wa Neema basi kiambatisho chake cha kihisia kinatamatika,

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥੨੩॥
naanak har si-o rahai samaa-ay. ||6||23||
O’ Nanak, only then one remains absorbed in remembering God. ||6||23||
Ee Nanak, wakati huo tu ndio mtu anabaki amevama katika kumkumbuka Mungu.

ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
aap karay sach alakh apaar.
Incomprehensible, eternal and limitless God does everything Himself.
Mungu asiyeeleweka, wa milele na asiye na kikomo anafanya kila kitu Mwenyewe.

ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਤੂੰ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
ha-o paapee tooN bakhsanhaar. ||1||
I am a sinner and You are the forgiver. ||1||
Mimi ni mtenda dhambi na Wewe ndiwe mwenye msamaha.

ਤੇਰਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
tayraa bhaanaa sabh kichh hovai.
O’ God, everything comes to pass by Your will.
Ee Mungu, kila kitu kinatendeka kwa mapenzi yako.

ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੋਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
manhath keechai ant vigovai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One who acts out of the obstinacy of one’s mind is ruined in the end. |1||Pause|
Mtu anayetenda kutokana na ukaidi wa akili anaharibiwa mwishowe. ||1||Sitisha||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਵਿਆਪੀ ॥
manmukh kee mat koorh vi-aapee.
The intellect of the self-willed person remains engrossed in falsehood.
Uwekevu wa mtu mwenye hiari binafsi anabaki amevama katika udanganyifu.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਪਾਪਿ ਸੰਤਾਪੀ ॥੨॥
bin har simran paap santaapee. ||2||
Without remembering God, it suffers in sin. ||2||
Bila kumkumbuka Mungu, unateseka katika dhambi.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੇਵਹੁ ॥
durmat ti-aag laahaa kichh layvhu.
Renounce your evil intellect and reap some spiritual benefit.
Kana uwekevu wako muovu na uvune faida ya kiroho.

ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਹੁ ॥੩॥
jo upjai so alakh abhayvhu. ||3||
Whatever is created, has originated from the incomprehensible and unfathomable God. ||3||
Chochote kimeumbwa, kimeasilia kutoka Mungu asiyefahamika na asiyeeleweka.

ਐਸਾ ਹਮਰਾ ਸਖਾ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
aisaa hamraa sakhaa sahaa-ee.
Our friend, God is always there to help us.
Rafiki wetu, Mungu daima yupo kutusaidia.

ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਈ ॥੪॥
gur har mili-aa bhagat darirhaa-ee. ||4||
With God’s grace one meets with the Guru and the Guru’s teachings motivate him for meditation on God. ||4||
Kwa neema ya Mungu mtu anakutana na Guru na mafundisho ya Guru yanahamasisha mtu kutafakari kuhusu Mungu.

ਸਗਲੀ ਸਉਦੀ ਤੋਟਾ ਆਵੈ ॥
sagleeN sa-odeeN totaa aavai.
Except meditation on Naam, there is spiritual loss in all kinds of worldly trades,
isipokuwa kutafakari kuhusu Naam, kuna hasara ya kiroho ya aina yote katika biashara ya kidunia,

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੫॥੨੪॥
naanak raam naam man bhaavai. ||5||24||
therefore God’s Name is pleasing to my mind, says Nanak. ||5||24||
hivyo basi Jina la Mungu linapendeza akilini mwangu, asema Nanak.

ਵਿਦਿਆ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ॥
vidi-aa veechaaree taaN par-upkaaree.
When one reflects on the real purpose of education then one becomes a philanthropist.
Wakati mtu anatafakari kuhusu kusudi halisi la elimu basi mtu anakuwa mfadhili.

ਜਾਂ ਪੰਚ ਰਾਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਾਸੀ ॥੧॥
jaaN panch raasee taaN tirath vaasee. ||1||
When one conquers the five passions then he becomes a true dweller at the sacred shrine of pilgrimage. ||1||
Wakati mtu anashinda shauku tano basi anakuwa mkaazi wa kweli wa ziara takatifu ya hija.

ਘੁੰਘਰੂ ਵਾਜੈ ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
ghunghroo vaajai jay man laagai.
That alone is true ringing of anklets is part of the devotional worship whenmy mind remains attuned to God.
Huko pekee ni kulia kwa kweli kwa mitali ni sehemu ya ibada ya ujitoaji wakati akili yangu inabaki imemakinikia Mungu.

ਤਉ ਜਮੁ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇ ਮੋ ਸਿਉ ਆਗੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ta-o jam kahaa karay mo si-o aagai.||1|| rahaa-o.
Then, what can the demon of death do me hereafter? ||1||Pause||
Basi, pepo wa kifo anaweza kunifanyia nini baadaye? ||1||Sitisha||

ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸੀ ਤਉ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ॥
aas niraasee ta-o sani-aasee.
When one abandons worldly desires then one become a true renouncer.
Wakati mtu anaacha hamu za kidunia basi mtu anakuwa mkanaji wa kweli.

ਜਾਂ ਜਤੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਾਂ ਕਾਇਆ ਭੋਗੀ ॥੨॥
jaaN jat jogee taaN kaa-i-aa bhogee. ||2||
If a householder can practice abstinence like a Yogi, then he is a true Yogi. ||2||
Iwapo mwenye nyumba anaweza kujizuia kama yogi, basi yeye ni Yogi wa kweli.

ਦਇਆ ਦਿਗੰਬਰੁ ਦੇਹ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
da-i-aa digambar dayh beechaaree.
A true Digambar (naked hermit) is the one who is compassionate and is free of vices .
Digambar wa kweli (mpweke uchi) ni yule ambaye ni mkarimu na yu huru kutoka maovu.

ਆਪਿ ਮਰੈ ਅਵਰਾ ਨਹ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
aap marai avraa nah maaree. ||3||
A true practitioner of nonviolence is the one who doesn’t kill others but eliminates his worldly desires . ||3||
Mtaalam wa kweli wa amani ni yule ambaye haui wengine lakini anaondoa hamu zake za kidunia.

ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਹੋਰਿ ਵੇਸ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ॥
ayk too hor vays bahutayray.
O’ God, You are only one but myriad are Your forms.
Ee Mungu, Wewe ni mmoja peke yake lakini una maelfu ya miundo.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਚੋਜ ਨ ਤੇਰੇ ॥੪॥੨੫॥
naanak jaanai choj na tayray. ||4||25||
Nanak can not comprehend Your wondrous plays. ||4||25||
Nanak hawezi kufahamu michezo yako ya kustaajabisha.

ਏਕ ਨ ਭਰੀਆ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਿ ਧੋਵਾ ॥
ayk na bharee-aa gun kar Dhovaa.
I am not stained by only one sin that could be washed by acquiring virtues.
Sijachafuliwa na dhambi moja pekee ambayo inaweza kusafishwa kwa kupata fadhila.

ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਹਉ ਨਿਸਿ ਭਰਿ ਸੋਵਾ ॥੧॥
mayraa saho jaagai ha-o nis bhar sovaa. ||1||
While my spouse-God is awake (waiting for me to remember Him), I sleep through the entire night of my life busy in worldly pursuits. ||1||
Wakati mwenzi wangu Mungu ameamka (ananingoja nimkumbuke Yeye), ninalala usiku mzima wa maisha yangu nikijishughulisha katika harakati za kidunia.

ਇਉ ਕਿਉ ਕੰਤ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਹੋਵਾ ॥
i-o ki-o kant pi-aaree hovaa.
In this way, how can I become dear to my Husband-God?
Kwa njia hii, ninawezaje kuwa wa dhati kwa Mume-Mungu wangu?

ਸਹੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਹਉ ਨਿਸ ਭਰਿ ਸੋਵਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saho jaagai ha-o nis bhar sovaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
when husband-God is awake waiting for me to remember Him, while I sleep through the entire night of my life busy in worldly pursuits.||1||Pause||
wakati Mume-Mungu ameamka akiningoja nimkumbuke, nami nalala usiku mzima wa maisha yangu nikijishughulisha katika harakati za kidunia. ||1||Sitisha||
