ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਵਿਧਉਸਿਆ ॥
sachaa sabad beechaar kaal viDh-usi-aa.
Reflecting on the True Word, he overcomes the fear of death
Akitafakari kuhusu Neno la Kweli, anashinda uoga wa kifo

ਢਾਢੀ ਕਥੇ ਅਕਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
dhaadhee kathay akath sabad savaari-aa.
Embellished by the Guru’s word, the minstrel describes the indescribable God.
Akipambwa kwa neno la Guru, mwimbaji anaeleza Mungu asiyeweza kuelezwa.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਣ ਗਹਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥੨੩॥
naanak gun geh raas har jee-o milay pi-aari-aa. ||23||
O’ Nanak, by amassing the divine virtues, he merges with the beloved God.
Ee Nanak, kwa kukusanya fadhila takatifu, anaungana na Mungu mpendwa.

ਖਤਿਅਹੁ ਜੰਮੇ ਖਤੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਤ ਖਤਿਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
khati-ahu jammay khatay karan ta khati-aa vich paahi.
Born because of their past mistakes, they make more mistakes, and keep going through this cycle.
Wakizaliwa kutokana na makosa yao ya awali, wanatenda makosa zaidi, na kuendelea kupitia mzunguko huu.

ਧੋਤੇ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
Dhotay mool na utreh jay sa-o Dhovan paahi.
These sins are not removed by washing, even by washing hundreds of times.
Dhambi hizi haziondolewi kwa kuoga, hata kwa kuoga mamia ya nyakati.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੇ ਬਖਸੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਤ ਪਾਹੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
naanak bakhsay bakhsee-ahi naahi ta paahee paahi. ||1||
O’ Nanak, if God forgives, they are forgiven; otherwise, they keep suffering punishment of birth and death. ||1||
Ee Nanak, iwapo Mungu asemehe, wanasamehewa; ama sivyo, wanaendelea kuteseka.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਝਖਣਾ ਦੁਖ ਛਡਿ ਮੰਗੀਅਹਿ ਸੁਖ ॥
naanak bolan jhakh-naa dukh chhad mangee-ah sukh.
O’ Nanak, it is absurd to ask to be spared from pain and only begging for comfort.
Ee Nanak, ni upumbavu kuomba kuepushwa kutoka uchungu na kuomba tu starehe.

ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਇ ਦਰਿ ਕਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਮਨੁਖ ॥
sukh dukh du-ay dar kaprhay pahirahi jaai manukh .
Peace and sorrow are like the two garments given by God. The human beings wear these as long as they live.
Amani na huzuni ni kama mavazi mawili yalitotolewa na Mungu. Binadamu wanavaa hayo ili mradi wanaishi.

ਜਿਥੈ ਬੋਲਣਿ ਹਾਰੀਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਚੰਗੀ ਚੁਪ ॥੨॥
jithai bolan haaree-ai tithai changee chup. ||2||
Where one is bound to lose in argument, it is better to keep silent in there.
Wakati mtu anaelekea kupoteza katika mabishano, ni afadhali kunyamaza humo.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਅੰਦਰੁ ਭਾਲਿਆ ॥
chaaray kundaa daykh andar bhaali-aa.
The one who has tried to search within the self after looking in all the four directions
Yule ambaye amejaribu kutafuta katika nafsi yake baada ya kutafuta katika mielekeo yote nne.

ਸਚੈ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਅਲਖਿ ਸਿਰਜਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥
sachai purakh alakh siraj nihaali-aa.
He realizes that the incomprehensible God Himself is taking care of the universe after creating it.
Anagundua ya kwamba Mungu mwenyewe asiyefahamika anatunza ulimwengu baada ya kuumba.

ਉਝੜਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਰਾਹ ਗੁਰਿ ਵੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥
ujharh bhulay raah gur vaykhaali-aa.
The Guru has shown the right path to the one who has gone astray.
Guru ameonyesha njia sahihi kwa yule ambaye amepotoka.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਚੇ ਵਾਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲਿਆ ॥
satgur sachay vaahu sach samaali-aa.
Hail to the True Guru, through whom we meditate on God.
Asifiwe Guru wa Kweli, ambaye kupitia kwake tunatafakari kuhusu Mungu.

ਪਾਇਆ ਰਤਨੁ ਘਰਾਹੁ ਦੀਵਾ ਬਾਲਿਆ ॥
paa-i-aa ratan gharaahu deevaa baali-aa.
The one within whom the Guru has lighted the lamp of divine knowledge, has found the jewel like God’s Name in his heart.
Yule ambaye ndani mwake Guru amewasha taa ya maarifa takatifu, amepata Jina la Mungu kama kito moyoni mwake.

ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਸਚ ਵਾਲਿਆ ॥
sachai sabad salaahi sukhee-ay sach vaali-aa.
By praising God through the True Word, they obtain peace and His support.
Kwa kumsifu Mungu kupitia Neno la Kweli, wanapata amani na msaada wake.

ਨਿਡਰਿਆ ਡਰੁ ਲਗਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਸਿ ਗਾਲਿਆ ॥
nidri-aa dar lag garab se gaali-aa.
But those who do not have the fear of God, are overtaken by other worldly fears.They are destroyed by their own pride.
Lakini wale ambao hawana uoga wa Mungu, wanatwaliwa na woga wengine wa kidunia.

ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਜਗੁ ਫਿਰੈ ਬੇਤਾਲਿਆ ॥੨੪॥
naavhu bhulaa jag firai baytaali-aa.||24|
Having forgotten God’s Name, the world is wandering around like ghost.
Ikiwa imesahau Jina la Mungu, dunia inazurura kote kama mzuka.

Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਭੈ ਮਰੈ ਭੀ ਭਉ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
bhai vich jammai bhai marai bhee bha-o man meh ho-ay.
People are born in the worldly fear, and in this fear they die. This Fear is always present in the mind.
Watu wanazaliwa katika uoga wa kidunia, na wanakufa katika uoga huu. Daima uoga huu upo akilini.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak bhai vich jay marai sahilaa aa-i-aa so-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, if one’s self conceit dies in the fear of God, then his coming into the world is blessed.
Ee Nanak, iwapo majivuno binafsi ya mtu yaangamizwe katika uoga wa Mungu, basi anakuja duniani humu amebarikiwa.

Shalok, by the Third Guru:
Shalok, na Guru wa Tatu:

ਭੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਖੁਸੀ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
bhai vin jeevai bahut bahut khusee-aa khusee kamaa-ay.
Without the fear of God, one may live very long life, and savor the most enjoyable pleasures.
Bila uoga wa Mungu, mtu anaweza kuishi maisha marefu mno, na kufurahia raha mzuri zaidi.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak bhai vin jay marai muhi kaalai uth jaa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, if one dies without the fear of God, such a person departs from the world in shame and dishonor.
Ee Nanak, iwapo mtu afe bila uoga wa Mungu, mtu kama huyo anaondoka kutoka dunia kwa aibu na fedheha.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤ ਸਰਧਾ ਪੂਰੀਐ ॥
satgur ho-ay da-i-aal ta sarDhaa pooree-ai.
The one on whom the Guru becomes gracious, his trust in God becomes firm.
Kwa yule ambaye Guru anakuwa mwenye neema kwake, imani yake kwa Mungu inakuwa thabiti.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਝੂਰੀਐ ॥
satgur ho-ay da-i-aal na kabahooN jhooree-ai.
The one on whom the Guru becomes gracious, he never agonize over his problems.
Kwa yule ambaye Guru anakuwa mwenye neema kwake, kamwe hahisi maumivu makali kutokana na shida zake.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
satgur ho-ay da-i-aal taa dukh na jaanee-ai.
The one on whom the Guru becomes merciful, he does not feel pain (even while living under adverse situations).
Kwa yule ambaye Guru anakuwa mwenye huruma kwake, yeye hahisi uchungu (hata akiishi katika hali ya dhiki na taabu).

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੀਐ ॥
satgur ho-ay da-i-aal taa har rang maanee-ai.
The one on whom the Guru becomes merciful, he enjoys God’s Love.
Kwa yule ambaye Guru anakuwa mwenye huruma kwake, anafurahia Upendo wa Mungu.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ॥
satgur ho-ay da-i-aal taa jam kaa dar kayhaa.
The one on whom the Guru becomes merciful, then why should one fear death?
Kwa yule ambaye Guru anakuwa mwenye huruma kwake, basi kwa nini mtu aogope kifo?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਹਾ ॥
satgur ho-ay da-i-aal taa sad hee sukh dayhaa.
The one on whom the Guru becomes merciful, he is always at peace.
Kwa yule ambaye Guru anakuwa mwenye huruma kwake,daima yupo katika amani.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
satgur ho-ay da-i-aal taa nav niDh paa-ee-ai.
The one on whom the Guru becomes merciful, he feels as if he has obtained the nine treasures of the world.
Kwa yule ambaye Guru anakuwa mwenye huruma kwake, anahisi kana kwamba amepata hazina tisa za dunia.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੨੫॥
satgur ho-ay da-i-aal ta sach samaa-ee-ai.||25||
The one on whom the Guru becomes merciful, he merges in the Truth (the eternal God).
Kwa yule ambaye Guru anakuwa mwenye huruma kwake, anaunganishwa katika Ukweli (Mungu wa milele).

ਸਿਰੁ ਖੋਹਾਇ ਪੀਅਹਿ ਮਲਵਾਣੀ ਜੂਠਾ ਮੰਗਿ ਮੰਗਿ ਖਾਹੀ ॥
sir khohaa-ay pee-ah malvaanee joothaa mang mang khaahee.
The Jains get their heads plucked to avoid killing any lice, they drink raw-water, and beg for leftover food (to avoid killing any life while processing water & food).
Wafuasi wa dini ya Jaini wamang’oa nywele yao ili kuzuia kuua chawa yeyote, wanakunywa maji mabichi na kula mabaki ya chakula (kuzuia kuua uhai wowote wakati wa usindikaji wa maji au chakula).

ਫੋਲਿ ਫਦੀਹਤਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਲੈਨਿ ਭੜਾਸਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਸਗਾਹੀ ॥
fol fadeehat muhi lain bharhaasaa paanee daykh sagaahee.
They smell the bad odors while raking up their own excreta to provide air to any life in it, and they hesitate to use water for their cleanliness.
Wananusa harufu mbaya wanaporeki kinyesi chao wenyewe kutoa hewa kwa uhai wowote ndani mwake, na wanachelea kutumia maji yoyote katika unadhifu wao.

ਭੇਡਾ ਵਾਗੀ ਸਿਰੁ ਖੋਹਾਇਨਿ ਭਰੀਅਨਿ ਹਥ ਸੁਆਹੀ ॥
bhaydaa vaagee sir khohaa-in bharee-an hath su-aahee.
Like the sheep, they get their hair plucked from their heads by the hands smeared with ashes.
Kama kondoo, wanafanya nywele yao ing’olewe kutoka vichwa vyao kwa mikono iliyopakwa majivu.

ਮਾਊ ਪੀਊ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਗਵਾਇਨਿ ਟਬਰ ਰੋਵਨਿ ਧਾਹੀ ॥
maa-oo pee-oo kirat gavaa-in tabar rovan Dhaahee.
Unlike their parents, they stop earning their livelihoods, and consequently their dependents cry out bitterly.
Tofauti na wazazi wao, wanaacha kuchumu riziki yao, na kwa sababu hiyo wategemezi wao wanalia vikali.

ਓਨਾ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਨ ਪਤਲਿ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਨ ਦੀਵਾ ਮੁਏ ਕਿਥਾਊ ਪਾਹੀ ॥
onaa pind na patal kiri-aa na deevaa mu-ay kithaa-oo paahee.
No one offers the rice dishes at their last rites, and no one lights the lamp for them. After their death, where will they be sent?
Hakuna mtu anawasilisha vitoweo vya wali kwa ibada yao ya mwisho, hakuna mtu anawasha taa kwa ajili yao. Baada ya kifo chao, watatumwa wapi?

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਨਿ ਨ ਢੋਈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਹੀ ॥
athsath tirath dayn na dho-ee barahman ann na khaahee.
They are not welcomed at the sixty-eight Hindu holy places, and Brahmins, do not accept their food.
Hawakubaliwi katika pahali takatifu sitini na nane za Kihindu, na Wabrahmini, hawakubali chakula chao.

ਸਦਾ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਥੈ ਟਿਕੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
sadaa kucheel raheh din raatee mathai tikay naahee.
They remain unclean forever, day and night; they do not apply the ceremonial tilak mark to their foreheads.
Wanabaki najisi milele, mchana na usiku; hawapaki ishara ya kisherehe ya tilak kwenye paji zao.

ਝੁੰਡੀ ਪਾਇ ਬਹਨਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਮਰਣੈ ਦੜਿ ਦੀਬਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
jhundee paa-ay bahan nit marnai darh deebaan na jaahee.
They silently sit crouched in groups, as if in mourning, and do not go to any holy gathering
Wanakaa kimya wakiwa katika vikundi, kana kwamba wanaomboleza, wala hawaendi kwa mikusanyiko yoyote takatifu.

ਲਕੀ ਕਾਸੇ ਹਥੀ ਫੁੰਮਣ ਅਗੋ ਪਿਛੀ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
lakee kaasay hathee fumman ago pichhee jaahee.
With their begging bowls hanging from their waists, and their fly-brushes in their hands, they walk along in single file (to avoid any killing with their feet).
Wakiwa na bakuli zao za kuomba zinaning’inia kwenye viuno vyao, na brashi zao za kufukuza nzi mikononi mwao, wanatembea kwa foleni moja (kuzuia kuua kwa miguu yao).

ਨਾ ਓਇ ਜੋਗੀ ਨਾ ਓਇ ਜੰਗਮ ਨਾ ਓਇ ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁੰਲਾ ॥
naa o-ay jogee naa o-ay jangam naa o-ay kaajee muNlaa.
They are not Yogis, and they are not Jangams, (followers of Shiva). They are not Qazis or Mullahs.
Wao sio Yogi, wala sio Wajangami, (wafuasi wa Shiva). Wao sio Waqazi au Mullah (viongozi wa kidini wa Kiislamu.
