ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
doojai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa visar ga-i-aa Dhi-aan.
O’merchant friend, in the second watch of the night (stage of your life), as soon as you come out of the womb you become oblivious to God.
Ee rafiki mchuuzi, katika mtazamo wa pili wa usiku (hatua ya maisha yako), ulipotoka tu kwenye chupa cha uzazi uliacha kuwa na ufahamu wa Mungu.
ਹਥੋ ਹਥਿ ਨਚਾਈਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਜਿਉ ਜਸੁਦਾ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਨੁ ॥
hatho hath nachaa-ee-ai vanjaari-aa mitraa ji-o jasudaa ghar kaan.
Then, as a small child, you are lovingly passed around hand to hand as if you were little Krishna in the home of his mother Yashoda.
Kisha, kama mtoto mdogo, unapitishwa kutoka mkono mmoja hadi mwingine kwa upendo kana kwamba wewe ni Krishna mdogo nyumbani mwa mama yake Yashoda.
ਹਥੋ ਹਥਿ ਨਚਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮਾਤ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਤੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
hatho hath nachaa-ee-ai paraanee maat kahai sut mayraa.
From hand to hand, you are passed around. your mother says, “This is my son.”
Kutoka mkono mmoja hadi mwingine, unapitishwa kote. Mama yako anasema, “Huyu ni mwana wangu”.
ਚੇਤਿ ਅਚੇਤ ਮੂੜ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
chayt achayt moorh man mayray ant nahee kachh tayraa.
O’ my thoughtless and foolish mind, remember God, because in the end, nothing shall be yours.
Ee akili yangu mpumbavu na usiye na fikira, mkumbuke Mungu, kwa sababu mwishowe, hakuna kitu kitakuwa chako.
ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
jin rach rachi-aa tiseh na jaanai man bheetar Dhar gi-aan.
You are not seriously thinking in your mind about Him (God) who has created this body of yours.
Wewe hufikirii akilini mwako kwa umakini kuhusu Yeye (Mungu) ambaye ameumba mwili huu wako.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੨॥
kaho naanak paraanee doojai pahrai visar ga-i-aa Dhi-aan. ||2||
Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night, you have forgotten to meditate. O’ Nanak, a human forgets God in the second stage of life (after the birth).
Asema Nanak, katika mtazamo wa pili wa usiku, umesahau kutafakari. Ee Nanak, binadamu anasahau Mungu katika mtazamo wa pili wa maisha (baada ya kuzaliwa).
ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ॥

In the third watch of the night (stage of life), O my merchant friend, your mind becomesfocused on wealth and pleasures of youth.
Katika mtazamo wa tatu wa usiku (hatua ya maisha), Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, akili yako ilimakinikia utajiri na raha za ujana.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹੀ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਧਾ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ॥
har kaa naam na chaythee vanjaari-aa mitraa baDhaa chhuteh jit.
You do not meditate on God’s Name, which can deliver you from the bondage of Maya.
Wewe hutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu, ambalo linaweza kukukomboa kutoka kwa utumwa wa Maya.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਬਿਕਲੁ ਭਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
har kaa naam na chaytai paraanee bikal bha-i-aa sang maa-i-aa.
The mortal does not meditate on God’s Name, and gets confused by Maya.
Binadamu hatafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu, na anachanganywa na Maya.
ਧਨ ਸਿਉ ਰਤਾ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਮਤਾ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
Dhan si-o rataa joban mataa ahilaa janam gavaa-i-aa.
Revelling in your riches and amazed with youth, you waste your life uselessly.
Ukifurahia utajiri wako na kustaajabishwa na ujana, unatumia vibaya maisha yako bure.
ਧਰਮ ਸੇਤੀ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਕੀਤੋ ਕਰਮੁ ਨ ਕੀਤੋ ਮਿਤੁ ॥
Dharam saytee vaapaar na keeto karam na keeto mit.
Neither did you meditate on God nor did you make friends with virtuous deeds.
Hukutafakari kuhusu Mungu wala hukufanya urafiki na vitendo vyema.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ॥੩॥
kaho naanak teejai pahrai paraanee Dhan joban si-o chit. ||3||
O’ Nanak, in the third stage of life, one’s mind is attached to wealth and youth.
Ee Nanak, katika hatua ya tatu ya maisha, akili ya mtu imeambatishwa kwa utajiri na ujana.
ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਲਾਵੀ ਆਇਆ ਖੇਤੁ ॥
cha-uthai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa laavee aa-i-aa khayt.
In the fourth stage of life, O my merchant friend, just as the crop grows to maturity and becomes fit for harvesting, you become old and ready to depart.
Katika hatua ya nne ya maisha, Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, kama vile mmea unamea na kukomaa na kuwa tayari kuvunwa, unakuwa mzee na tayari kuondoka.
ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਭੇਤੁ ॥
jaa jam pakarh chalaa-i-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa kisai na mili-aa bhayt.
O’ my merchant friend, when the Messenger of Death seizes and dispatches the soul, no one knows the mystery of where you have gone.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, wakati Mjumbe wa Kifo anakamata na kutuma njiani roho, hakuna mtu anajua fumbo la kule ambako umeenda.
ਭੇਤੁ ਚੇਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥
bhayt chayt har kisai na mili-o jaa jam pakarh chalaa-i-aa.
So think of Creator! No one knows this secret, of when the Messenger of Death will seize you and take you away.
Basi fikiria kuhusu Muumba! Hakuna mtu anajua siri hii, ya wakati ambapo Mjumbe wa Kifo atakukamata na kukuchukua.
ਝੂਠਾ ਰੁਦਨੁ ਹੋਆ ਦੋੁਆਲੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥
jhoothaa rudan ho-aa do-aalai khin meh bha-i-aa paraa-i-aa.
Then some false weeping and crying takes place around your dead body and in an instant you become a stranger
Kisha kuomboleza na kulia kwa uongo kunatendeka kando ya maiti na papo hapo unakuwa mgeni.
ਸਾਈ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
saa-ee vasat paraapat ho-ee jis si-o laa-i-aa hayt.
In the next life, you receive only that you had longed for in this life.
Katika maisha yatakayofuata, unapokea tu kile ambacho ulitamani katika maisha haya.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਲਾਵੀ ਲੁਣਿਆ ਖੇਤੁ ॥੪॥੧॥
kaho naanak paraanee cha-uthai pahrai laavee luni-aa khayt. ||4||1||
Says Nanak, O mortal, this is how the human life ends in the fourth stage of life like the ripe field is harvested.
Asema Nanak, Ee binadamu, hivi ndivyo maisha ya binadamu yanavyokwisha katika hatua ya nne ya maisha kama shamba bivu linavyovunwa.

O’ my merchant friend, your innocent mind has a child-like understanding.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, akili yako isiyo na hatia ina uelewa kama wa mtoto.
ਖੀਰੁ ਪੀਐ ਖੇਲਾਈਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਹੇਤੁ ॥ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਨੇਹੁ ਘਨੇਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਾਈ ॥
kheer pee-ai khaylaa-ee-ai vanjaari-aa mitraa maat pitaa sut hayt. maat pitaa sut nayhu ghanayraa maa-i-aa moh sabaa-ee.
O’ my merchant friend, you are suckled and fondled. Your father and mother love you immensely, and everyone is afflicted with the love for Maya.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, unanyonyeshwa na kupapaswa. Baba na mama yako wanakupenda sana, na kila mtu anaathiriwa na upendo kwa Maya.
ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
sanjogee aa-i-aa kirat kamaa-i-aa karnee kaar karaa-ee.
By the good fortune from the good deeds done in the past, you have come, and now you perform actions to determine your future.
Kwa bahati nzuri kutoka kwa vitendo vizuri vilivyotendwa hapo awali, umekuja, na sasa unatenda vitendo kuamua ujao wako.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਬੂਡੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਹੇਤਿ ॥
raam naam bin mukat na ho-ee boodee doojai hayt.
Without meditating on God’s Name, there is no salvation, the entire world is drowning in duality (in the love of things other than God).
Bila kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu, hakuna wokovu, dunia nzima inazama katika uwili (katika upendo wa vitu mbali na Mungu).
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਛੂਟਹਿਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਿ ॥੧॥
kaho naanak paraanee pahilai pahrai chhootahigaa har chayt. ||1||
Nanak says, O’ mortal, even in the first stage of your life, you would be emancipated only by remembering God.
Nanak anasema, Ee binadamu, hata katika hatua ya kwanza ya maisha, utakombolewa tu kwa kumkumbuka Mungu.
ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਮੈ ਮਤਿ ॥
doojai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa bhar joban mai mat.
In the second watch of the night (stage of life), O my merchant friend, you are intoxicated with the wine of youth and beauty.
Katika mtazamo wa pili wa usiku (hatua ya maisha), Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, unalewa na divai ya ujana na urembo.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚਿਤਿ ॥
ahinis kaam vi-aapi-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa anDhulay naam na chit.
Day and night, you are engrossed in sexual desire, O my merchant friend, and y our consciousness is blind to the Naam.
Mchana na usiku, unavama katika hamu za ngono, Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, na fahamu yetu ni kipofu kwa Naam.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਮੀਠੇ ॥
raam naam ghat antar naahee hor jaanai ras kas meethay.
One does not cherish the divine Name in the heart, because one deems all other indulgences and tastes as sweet.
Mtu hathamini Jina takatifu moyoni, kwa sababu mtu anafikiria anasa na vionjo vingine vyote kuwa vitamu.
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹੁਗੇ ਝੂਠੇ ॥
gi-aan Dhi-aan gun sanjam naahee janam marhugay jhoothay.
O’ false human being, without the merits of any divine wisdom, meditation, or self-discipline, you would keep suffering in rounds of births and deaths.
Ee binadamu wa uongo, bila sifa za hekima yoyote takatifu, utafakari au nidhamu binafsi, utaendelea kuteseka katika mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa kwingi.
ਤੀਰਥ ਵਰਤ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
tirath varat such sanjam naahee karam Dharam nahee poojaa.
No ritualistic deeds, such as visiting) holy places, observing fasts, cleansing the body, or performing acts of piety and worship will be of any avail to you.
Hakuna vitendo vya kimila, kama kutembelea) mahali takatifu, kufunga, kutakasa mwili, au kutenda vitendo vya uchaji na ibada vitakuwa na manufaa yoyote kwako.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥
naanak bhaa-ay bhagat nistaaraa dubiDhaa vi-aapai doojaa. ||2||
O’ Nanak, it is only through the loving adoration of God that one is emancipated. Everything else leads to duality (the love of worldly things).
Ee Nanak, ni kwa ibada ya upendo kwa Mungu tu ambapo mtu anakombolewa. Kila kitu kingine kinaongoza kwa uwili (upendo wa vitu vya kidunia).
ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਸਰਿ ਹੰਸ ਉਲਥੜੇ ਆਇ ॥
teejai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa sar hans ultharhay aa-ay.
In the third stage of your life, O my merchant friend, you hair has turned grey, (indicating that span of your life has shortened and you should remember God).
Katika hatua ya tatu ya maisha yako, Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, nywele zako zinageuka rangi ya majivu, (kuashiria kwamba muda wa kuishi umefupishwa na unafaa kumkumbuka Mungu).
ਜੋਬਨੁ ਘਟੈ ਜਰੂਆ ਜਿਣੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਆਵ ਘਟੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
joban ghatai jaroo-aa jinai vanjaari-aa mitraa aav ghatai din jaa-ay.
O’ my merchant friend, youth wears itself out, and old age triumphs, as time passes, your days diminish.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, ujana unajichakaza, na uzee unasimanga, muda unavyozidi kuyoyoma, siku zako zinapungua.
