ਨਾਨਾ ਰੂਪ ਜਿਉ ਸ੍ਵਾਗੀ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥
naanaa roop ji-o savaagee dikhaavai.
Like a performer, he is seen assuming various disguises.
Kama mwigizaji, anaonekana akivaa maficho tofauti.

ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਨਚਾਵੈ ॥
ji-o parabh bhaavai tivai nachaavai.
As it pleases God, He makes the mortal dance accordingly.
Inavyopendeza Mungu, Yeye anafanya binadamu acheze anavyotaka.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਹੋਇ ॥
jo tis bhaavai so-ee ho-ay.
Whatever pleases Him, happens.
Chochote kinachompendeza Yeye, kinatendeka.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੭॥
naanak doojaa avar na ko-ay. ||7||
O’ Nanak, there is none other like Him. ||7||
Ee Nanak, hakuna mwengine kama Yeye.

ਕਬਹੂ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kabhoo saaDhsangat ih paavai.
When this person attains the Company of the Holy.
Wakati mtu huyu anafikia Uandamano wa Watakatifu.

ਉਸੁ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
us asthaan tay bahur na aavai.
then he does not come out of that joyful state of mind,
basi yeye hatoki kwenye hali ya furaha ya akili,

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਗਿਆਨ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
antar ho-ay gi-aan pargaas.
Because, in that company his mind gets illuminated with divine knowledge,
Kwa sababu, katika huo uandamano akili yake inaangazwa na maarifa takatifu,

ਉਸੁ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਕਾ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥
us asthaan kaa nahee binaas.
and that enlightened state of mind never perishes.
Na hali hiyo ya kiakili ya kuangazwa kamwe haikwishi.

ਮਨ ਤਨ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਇਕ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
man tan naam ratay ik rang.
(In this state) one’s body and mind are imbued with the love for God,
(Katika hali hiyo) mwili na akili ya mtu inajawa na upendo kwa Mungu,

ਸਦਾ ਬਸਹਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
sadaa baseh paarbarahm kai sang.
and he forever dwells with the Supreme God.
Na milele anaishi na Mungu Mkuu.

ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜਲੁ ਆਇ ਖਟਾਨਾ ॥
ji-o jal meh jal aa-ay khataanaa.
Just as water blends with water,
Kama vile maji yanachanganyikana na maji,

ਤਿਉ ਜੋਤੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
ti-o jotee sang jot samaanaa.
similarly his enlightened soul blends with the Supreme soul.
Vivyo hivyo roho yake iliyoangazwa inaungana na roho Kuu.

ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਗਵਨ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥
mit ga-ay gavan paa-ay bisraam.
His cycle of birth and death ceases, and he attains eternal peace.
Mzunguko wake wa kuzaliwa na kufa unatamatika, na anafikia amani ya milele.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ॥੮॥੧੧॥
naanak parabh kai sad kurbaan. ||8||11||
O’ Nanak, we should dedicate to God forever. ||8||11||
Ee Nanak, tunafaa kujiweka wakfu kwa Mungu milele.

ਸੁਖੀ ਬਸੈ ਮਸਕੀਨੀਆ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਤਲੇ ॥
sukhee basai maskeenee-aa aap nivaar talay.
By shedding self-conceit, the humble person dwells in peace.
Kwa kuondoa majivuno binafsi, mtu mnyenyekevu anaishi kwa amani.

ਬਡੇ ਬਡੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਲੇ ॥੧॥
baday baday ahaNkaaree-aa nanak garab galay.||1||
O’ Nanak, mighty arrogant people are consumed by their own pride. ||1||
Ee Nanak, watu wenye nguvu ambao wana kiburi wanaangamizwa na kiburi chao wenyewe.

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥
asatpadee.
Ashtapadee:

ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
jis kai antar raaj abhimaan.
The one who becomes egotistically proud of possessions and power in the mind,
Yule anayekuwa mwenye fahari ya ubinafsi wa mali na nguvu akilini,

ਸੋ ਨਰਕਪਾਤੀ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੁਆਨੁ ॥
so narakpaatee hovat su-aan.
is liable to the punishment like a dog in hell.
Anastahili adhabu kama mbwa katika jehanamu.

ਜੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਜੋਬਨਵੰਤੁ ॥
jo jaanai mai jobanvant.
One who egotistically deems himself as youthful and handsome,
Yule ambaye kwa ubinafsi anajifikiria kuwa kijana na mtanashati,

ਸੋ ਹੋਵਤ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਜੰਤੁ ॥
so hovat bistaa kaa jant.
he is like a worm in the filth
yeye ni kama minyoo kwenye uchafu

ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਕਰਮਵੰਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
aapas ka-o karamvant kahaavai.
The one who calls himself as the doer of pious deeds in ego.
Yule anayejiita mtendaji wa vitendo vya kumcha Mungu katika ubinafsi.

ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਵੈ ॥
janam marai baho jon bharmaavai.
Keeps suffering in the cycles of birth and death.
Anaendelea kuteseka katika mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਧਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
Dhan bhoom kaa jo karai gumaan.
The one who feels egoistically proud of his wealth and lands
Yule anayehisi fahari ya ubinafsi kwa utajiri na ardhi yake

ਸੋ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
so moorakh anDhaa agi-aan.
is a foolish, blind and ignorant.
Ni mpumbavu, kipofu na mjinga.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
kar kirpaa jis kai hirdai gareebee basaavai.
The one, in whose heart God mercifully instills humility,
Yule ambaye, moyoni mwake Mungu kwa huruma anaweka unyenyekevu,

ਨਾਨਕ ਈਹਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਆਗੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
naanak eehaa mukat aagai sukh paavai. ||1||
O Nanak, he is liberated here from vices, and obtains peace hereafter. ||1||
Ee Nanak, yeye anakombolewa humu kutoka dhambi, na anapata amani baadaye.

ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਹੋਇ ਕਰਿ ਗਰਬਾਵੈ ॥
Dhanvantaa ho-ay kar garbaavai.
Upon becoming wealthy, one feels egoistically proud of his riches,
Punde tu anapokuwa tajiri, mtu anahisi fahari ya ubinafsi kwa utajiri wake,

ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
tarin samaan kachh sang na jaavai.
must realize that nothing shall go with him in the end, not even a straw.
Anapaswa kugundua kwamba hakuna kitu kitaambatana naye mwishowe, sio hata unyasi.

ਬਹੁ ਲਸਕਰ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਆਸ ॥
baho laskar maanukh oopar karay aas.
He may place his hopes on a large army and men,
Anaweza kuweka matumaini yake kwa jeshi kubwa au binadamu,

ਪਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
pal bheetar taa kaa ho-ay binaas.
(should know that) all these things are destroyed in an instant
(anapaswa kujua kwamba) vitu hivi vyote vinaangamizwa papo hapo

ਸਭ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਜਾਨੈ ਬਲਵੰਤੁ ॥
sabh tay aap jaanai balvant.
The one who deems himself to be the strongest of all,
Yule ambaye anajifikiria kuwa mwenye nguvu zaidi kati ya wote,

ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ਭਸਮੰਤੁ ॥
khin meh ho-ay jaa-ay bhasmant.
in an instant that one may be reduced to ashes.
Papo hapo mtu huyo anaweza kuangamizwa awe majivu.

ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਬਦੈ ਆਪਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
kisai na badai aap ahaNkaaree.
The one who is so haughty and does not care for anyone else,
Yule ambaye ni mwenye majivuno sana wala hajali mtu yeyote mwengine,

ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥
Dharam raa-ay tis karay khu-aaree.
Is badly disgraced by the Righteous Judge.
Anaaibishwa vibaya na Hakimu wa Haki.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
gur parsaad jaa kaa mitai abhimaan.
The one whose ego is eliminated by the Guru’s grace,
Yule ambaye ubinafsi wake unaondolewa kwa neema ya Guru,

ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
so jan naanak dargeh parvaan. ||2||
O’ Nanak, that person is approved in God’s court.||2||
Ee Nanak, mtu huyo anaidhinishwa katika mahakama ya Mungu.

ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਹਉ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
kot karam karai ha-o Dhaaray.
If one performs millions of good deeds and also feels egotistically proud of those deeds,
Iwapo mtu atende mamilioni ya vitendo vizuri na pia ahisi fahari ya ubinafsi kwa hivyo vitendo,

ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਬਿਰਥਾਰੇ ॥
saram paavai saglay birthaaray.
that person is only doing hard labor, and all those deeds are a waste.
Mtu huyo anafanya kazi ngumu tu, na vitendo hivyo vyote ni bure.

ਅਨਿਕ ਤਪਸਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥
anik tapasi-aa karay ahaNkaar.
The one, who performs myriads of penances and indulges in ego,
Yule, anayefanya maelfu ya toba na anajihusisha katika ubinafsi,

ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥
narak surag fir fir avtaar.
keeps enduring pain and pleasure, as if going through heaven and hell again and again
Anaendelea kuvumilia uchungu na raha, kana kwamba anapitia mbinguni na jehanamu tena na tena

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਨਹੀ ਦ੍ਰਵੈ ॥
anik jatan kar aatam nahee darvai.
If in spite of making numerous efforts, one does not become become tender and compassionate,
Iwapo licha ya kufanya jitihada nyingi, mtu asiwe mworor na mkarimu,

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਗਵੈ ॥
har dargeh kaho kaisay gavai.
then how can he reach God’s court?
Basi atawezaje kufikia mahakama ya Mungu?

ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਭਲਾ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
aapas ka-o jo bhalaa kahaavai.
One who claims to be virtuous,
Yule anayejidai kuwa mfadhili,

ਤਿਸਹਿ ਭਲਾਈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
tiseh bhalaa-ee nikat na aavai.
virtue does not even touch that one.
Fadhila hata haigusi mtu huyo.

ਸਰਬ ਕੀ ਰੇਨ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
sarab kee rayn jaa kaa man ho-ay.
The one whose mind becomes humble to all,
Yule ambaye akili yake inakuwa nyenyekevu kwa wote,

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
kaho naanak taa kee nirmal so-ay. ||3||
O’ Nanak, his reputation is spotlessly pure.||3||
Ee Nanak, sifa yake ni safi bila doa.

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
jab lag jaanai mujh tay kachh ho-ay.
As long as one thinks that he can make something happen with his power,
Ili mradi mtu anafikiria kwamba anaweza kufanya chochote kitendeke kwa nguvu yake mwenyewe.

ਤਬ ਇਸ ਕਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
tab is ka-o sukh naahee ko-ay.
till then that person cannot obtain peace.
Hadi wakati huo mtu huyo haweza kupata amani.

ਜਬ ਇਹ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
jab ih jaanai mai kichh kartaa.
As long as this mortal thinks that he is the doer of any task,
Ili mradi binadamu huyu anadhani kwamba yeye ndiye mtendaji wa kazi yoyote,

ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥
tab lag garabh jon meh firtaa.
till then, he wanders in the cycles of birth and death.
Hadi wakati huo, anazurura katika mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਜਬ ਧਾਰੈ ਕੋਊ ਬੈਰੀ ਮੀਤੁ ॥
jab Dhaarai ko-oo bairee meet.
As long as he considers one an enemy, and another a friend,
Ili mradi anafikiria mmoja kuwa adui, na mwengine kuwa rafiki,

ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
tab lag nihchal naahee cheet.
till then that person’s mind will not become steady and peaceful.
Hadi wakati huo akili ya mtu huyo haitakuwa thabiti na yenye amani.

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇ ॥
jab lag moh magan sang maa-ay.
As long as he is engrossed in Maya (worldly riches),
Ili mradi yeye amevama katika Maya (utajiri wa kidunia),

ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
tab lag Dharam raa-ay day-ay sajaa-ay.
the Righteous Judge keeps administering punishment.
Hakimu wa Haki anaendelea kutoa adhabu.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥
parabh kirpaa tay banDhan tootai.
The bonds of Maya (worldly attachments) are shattered by God’s Grace,
Vifungo vya Maya (viambatisho vya kidunia) vinavunjwa kwa Neema ya Mungu,

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੪॥
gur parsaad naanak ha-o chhootai. ||4||
O’ Nanak, a person’s ego is eliminated by the grace of the Guru . ||4||
Ee Nanak, ubinafsi wa mtu unaondolewa kwa neema ya Guru.

ਸਹਸ ਖਟੇ ਲਖ ਕਉ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
sahas khatay lakh ka-o uth Dhaavai.
After earning a thousand, he runs after million.
Baada ya kuchuma elfu moja, yeye anakimbilia milioni moja.
