ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
manmukh maa-i-aa moh hai naam na lago pi-aar.
The self-willed person loves Maya and love for Naam does not well up in him.
Mtu mwenye hiari binafsi anapenda Maya na upendo wa Naam hautokei ndani mwake.
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਰੇ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥
koorh kamaavai koorh sangrahai koorh karay aahaar.
He practices falsehood, amasses falsehood, and makes falsehood as his sustenance or support in life.
Yeye anatenda udanganyifu, anakusanya udanganyifu, na kufanya udanganyifu kuwa riziki au tegemezo maishani.
ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਰੁ ॥
bikh maa-i-aa Dhan sanch mareh antay ho-ay sabh chhaar.
People struggle immensely to amass Maya, a poison for spiritual life; which proves useless like ashes in the end.
Watu wanang’ng’ana sana kukusanya Maya, sumu ya maisha ya kiroho; ambayo inajithibitisha kuwa bure kama majivu mwishowe.
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸੁਚ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
karam Dharam such sanjam karahi antar lobh vikaar.
Even when they practice religious rituals, purity and austere self-discipline; they stillhave greed and other vices in their mind.
Hata wakati wanafanya mila za kidini, udhu na nidhamu binafsi kali; bado wana tamaa na maovu mengine akilini.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੦॥੧੧॥
naanak naam milai vadi-aa-ee dukh sukh sam kar jaanni-aa. ||8||10||11||
O’ Nanak, it is only through God’s Name that one achieves glory, and is able to accept pain and pleasure alike.
Ee Nanak, ni kupitia Jina la Mungu tu ambapo mtu anatimiza utukufu, na anaweza kukubaki uchungu na raha sawasawa.

ਤੇਰੀਆ ਖਾਣੀ ਤੇਰੀਆ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
tayree-aa khaanee tayree-aa banee.
O’ God, all the four sources of life and different species are created by You.
Ee Mungu, vyanzo vyote vinne vya uhai na spishi tofauti wameumbwa na Wewe.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥
bin naavai sabh bharam bhulaanee.
But without meditating on Your Name, they all are lost in delusion.
Lakini bila kutafakari kuhusu Jina lako, wote wanapotea katika udanganyifu.
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
gur sayvaa tay har naam paa-i-aa bin satgur ko-ay na paavni-aa. ||1||
The Naam is realized by following the Guru’s words. No one can realize God without the True Guru’s teachings.
Naam inagunduliwa kwa kufuata maneno ya Guru. Hakuna mtu anaweza kugundua Mungu bila mafundisho ya Guru wa kweli.
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree har saytee chit laavani-aa.
I am totally dedicated to those who attune their mind to God.
Nimejiweka wakfu kabisa kwa wale wanaomakinisha akili zao kwa Mungu.
ਹਰਿ ਸਚਾ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਹਜੇ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har sachaa gur bhagtee paa-ee-ai sehjay man vasaavani-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Through devotion to the Guru, the True One is realized; He comes to dwell in the mind, with intuitive ease.
Kupitia kujitolea kwa Guru, yule Mmoja wa Kweli anagunduliwa; anakuja kuishi akilini, kwa urahisi wa hisia na silika.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
satgur sayvay taa sabh kichh paa-ay.
One obtains everything by following the True Guru’s teachings.
Mtu anapata kila kitu kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru wa Kweli.
ਜੇਹੀ ਮਨਸਾ ਕਰਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jayhee mansaa kar laagai tayhaa fal paa-ay.
With whatever expectation one comes to the Guru’s refuge, one obtains the fruit accordingly.
Pamoja na matarajio yoyote ambayo mtu anakuja nayo katika kimbilio cha Guru, mtu huyo anapata matokeo ipasavyo.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਵਥੂ ਕਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
satgur daataa sabhnaa vathoo kaa poorai bhaag milaavani-aa. ||2||
The true Guru is the giver of everything. Through perfect destiny God unites a person with the Guru.
Guru wa kweli ni mpaji wa kila kitu. Kupitia hatima kamili Mungu anaunganisha mtu na Guru.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਇਕੁ ਨ ਧਿਆਏ ॥
ih man mailaa ik na Dhi-aa-ay.
This mind is polluted with the filth of vices; it does not meditate on God.
Akili hii imechafuliwa na uchafu wa dhambi; haitafakari kuhusu Mungu.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਬਹੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥
antar mail laagee baho doojai bhaa-ay.
Deep within, one is soiled and stained by the love of duality.
Ndani mwake kwa kina, mtu anachafuliwa na kutiwa madoa na upendo wa uwili.
ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਭਵੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਵਧੇਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
tat tirath disantar bhavai ahaNkaaree hor vaDhayrai ha-umai mal laavani-aa. ||3||
The egotists may go on pilgrimages to holy rivers, sacred shrines and foreign lands, but they only gather more dirt of egotism.
Wabinafsi wanaweza kuenda hija kwa mito takatifu, ziara takatifu na nchi geni, lakini wanakusanya tu uchafu zaidi wa ubinafsi.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਮਲੁ ਜਾਏ ॥
satgur sayvay taa mal jaa-ay.
By following True Guru’s word, the dirt and filth of vices goes away.
Kwa kufuata neno la Guru wa kweli, uchafu wa dhambi unaondolewa.
ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
jeevat marai har si-o chit laa-ay.
The one who attunes his mind on God, while performing his moral duties eradicates his self conceit, as if he has died while still alive,
Yule ambaye anamakinikisha akili yake kwa Mungu, wakati anatenda wajibu wake wa kimaadili anaangamiza majivuno yake binafsi, kana kwamba amekufa akiwa bado yuko hai.
ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
har nirmal sach mail na laagai sach laga mail gavaavni-aa. ||4||
God is eternal and immaculate; no filth sticks to Him. The one who attunes oneself to Him, gets rid of the dirt of vices.
Mungu ni wa milele na safi; hakuna uchafu unaomkwamilia. Yule ambaye anajimakinisha kwake, anaondoa uchafu wake wa dhambi.
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਅੰਧ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥
baajh guroo hai anDh gubaaraa.
Without the Guru’s teaching, there is total darkness of ignorance.
Bila funzo la Guru, kuna giza totoro ya ujinga.
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥
agi-aanee anDhaa anDh anDhaaraa.
Without the Guru’s teachings one remains completely blind in the love of Maya.
Bila mafundisho ya Guru mtu anabaki kipofu kabisa katika upendo wa Maya.
ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਕੀੜੇ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਚਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
bistaa kay keerhay bistaa kamaaveh fir bistaa maahi pachaavani-aa. ||5||
Such a person is like worms of filth, they gather filth and are consumed in filth.
Mtu kama huyo ni kama minyoo ya uchafu, wanakusanya uchafu na kuangamia katika uchafu.
ਮੁਕਤੇ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
muktay sayvay muktaa hovai.
The person who follows the emancipated Guru, also emancipates himself.
Mtu anayefuata Guru aliyekombolewa, pia anajikomboa mwenyewe.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਬਦੇ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa sabday khovai.
Through the Guru’s word, he sheds all ego and emotional attachment to Maya.
Kupitia neno la Guru, anaondoa ubinafsi wote na kiambatisho cha kihisia kwa Maya.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਚਾ ਸੇਵੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
an-din har jee-o sachaa sayvee poorai bhaag gur paavni-aa. ||6||
Following the Guru’s word he always lovingly meditates on the eternal God. But only by perfect destiny, one meets the Guru.
Kwa kufuata neno la Guru anatafakari daima kwa upendokuhusu Mungu wa milele. Lakini kwa hatima kamili pekee, ndipo mtu anakutana na Guru.
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
aapay bakhsay mayl milaa-ay.
God unites that one with the Guru, on whom He Himself becomes gracious.
Mungu anaunganisha mtu huyo na Guru, ambaye Yeye mwenyewe amekuwa mwenye neema kwake.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
pooray gur tay naam niDh paa-ay.
That one obtains the treasure of Naam from the Perfect Guru.
Mtu huyo anapata hazina ya Naam kutoka Guru kamili.
ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਦਾ ਮਨੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਗਵਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
sachai naam sadaa man sachaa sach sayvay dukh gavaavni-aa. ||7||
By always attuning to God’s Name, the mind becomes free from the vices. By lovingly meditating on the eternal God one gets rid of all sorrows.
Kwa kumakinikia Jina la Mungu, akili inakuwa huru kutoka dhambi. Na kwa kutafakari kwa upendo kuhusu Mungu wa milele mtu anaondoa huzuni yake yote.
ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੁ ॥
sadaa hajoor door na jaanhu.
He is always close at hand, do not think that He is far away.
Yeye daima yupo karibu mno, usifikirie ya kwamba yuko mbali.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ॥
gur sabdee har antar pachhaanhu.
Through the Guru’s word, realize Him within yourself.
Kupitia neno la Guru, mgundue Mungu ndani mwako.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧੧॥੧੨॥
naanak naam milai vadi-aa-ee pooray gur tay paavni-aa. ||8||11||12||
O’ Nanak, it’s only through Naam that honor and glory is obtained here and in God’s court. Naam is obtained only from the Perfect Guru.
Ee Nanak, ni kupitia Naam pekee ambapo heshima na utukufu unapatikana humu na katika mahakama ya Mungu. Naam inapatikana tu kutoka kwa Guru kamili.
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Maajh, by the Third Guru:
Raag Maajh, na Guru wa Tatu:
ਐਥੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥
aithai saachay so aagai saachay.
Those who are true here (their mind is absorbed in the Naam), remain true hereafter as well (united with God)
Wale ambao ni wa kweli humu (akili yao imevama katika Naam). Wanabaki wa kweli baadaye pia (wanaungana na Mungu)
ਮਨੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਚੇ ॥
man sachaa sachai sabad raachay.
Those who remain absorbed in the Divine word, their mind becomes free from the vices.
Wale wanaobaki wamevama katika neno Takatifu, akili yao inakuwa huru kutoka dhambi.
ਸਚਾ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
sachaa sayveh sach kamaaveh sacho sach kamaavani-aa. ||1||
They lovingly meditate on God, do only righteous deeds and earn the wealth of Naam.
Wanatafakari kwa upendo kuhusu Mungu, wanatenda vitendo vya haki pekee na kuchuma utajiri wa Naam.
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree sachaa naam man vasaavani-aa.
I dedicate myself to those who enshrine the eternal Name of God in their heart.
Najiweka wakfu kwa wale wanaoweka vizuri Jina la milele la Mungu moyoni mwao.
ਸਚੇ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sachay sayveh sach samaaveh sachay kay gun gaavani-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
They, who lovingly meditate on the eternal God, remain merged with the True One by singing His Glorious Praises.
Wale, wanaotafakari kwa upendo kuhusu Mungu wa milele, wanabaki wameungana na yule Mmoja wa Kweli kwa kuimba Sifa zake Tukufu.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
pandit parheh saad na paavahi.
The Pandits read and study the scriptures, but they do not relish the bliss.
Walimu wa busara wanasoma na kuchunguza maandishi, lakini wanafurahii raha tele.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਭਰਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay maa-i-aa man bharmaaveh.
In love with duality, they mislead their mind towards Maya.
Wakipendezwa na uwili, wanapotosha akili zao kuelekea kwa Maya.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਭ ਸੁਧਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
maa-i-aa mohi sabh suDh gavaa-ee kar avgan pachhotaavani-aa. ||2||
In the love of Maya, they lose their mind, committing evils they regret.
Katika upendo wa Maya, wanapoteza akili zao, wakitenda maovu ambayo watajuta.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਤਤੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
satgur milai taa tat paa-ay.
When one meets the True Guru, then he realizes the essence of Naam;
Wakati mtu anakutana na Guru wa Kweli, kisha anagundua kiini cha Naam;
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
har kaa naam man vasaa-ay.
and enshrines God’s Name in the mind
na kuweka vizuri Jina la Mungu akilini
