ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
par ghar cheet manmukh dolaa-ay.
A self conceited person’s mind is lured for another’s woman.
Akili ya mtu mwenye majivuno binafsi inavutiwa na mwanamke wa mwengine.
ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥
gal jayvree DhanDhai laptaa-ay.
By doing so, he is actually trapping himself in the web of vices.
Kwa kufanya hivyo, yeye hasa anajinasa katika wavu wa dhambi.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੫॥
gurmukh chhootas har gun gaa-ay. ||5||
But the Guru’s follower escapes from all such entanglements by singing God’s praises. ||5||

ਜਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਬਿਧਵਾ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਦੇਈ ॥
ji-o tan biDhvaa par ka-o day-ee.
just as a widow (an unchaste) woman surrenders her body to a stranger,
kama vile mjane (mzinzi) anasalimisha mwili wake kwa mgeni,
ਕਾਮਿ ਦਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਪਰ ਵਸਿ ਸੇਈ ॥
kaam daam chit par vas say-ee.
she even allows her mind to be controlled by others for lust or money.
Hata anakubali akili yake idhibitiwe na wengine kwa ukware au pesa.
ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥
bin pir taripat na kabahooN ho-ee. ||6||
But without a legitimate husband, she is never fully satisfied. (Similarly, forsakingHusband-God a soul-bride indulges in vices and never attains spiritual peace).
Lakini bila mume halali, kamwe haridhishwi kikamilifu. (Vivyo hivyo, kwa kuacha Mume-Mungu roho kama bi harusi anajishughulisha katika maovu na kamwe hapati amani ya kiroho).|6|
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੋਥੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠਾ ॥ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਾਟਾ ॥
parh parh pothee simrit paathaa.bayd puraan parhai sun thaataa.
A pundit or ascholar keeps reading holy books, reciting Simritis, Vedas, Puranas, and other compilations,
Mtaalam au msomi anaendelea kusoma vitabu takatifu, kukariri Simritis, Vedas, Puranas, na utungo mwingine,
ਬਿਨੁ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਨਾਟਾ ॥੭॥
bin ras raatay man baho naataa. ||7||
but without tasting the elixir of Naam, his mind wanders endlessly. ||7||
lakini bila kuonja dawa ya Naam, akili yake inazurura bila mwisho.
ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਜਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
ji-o chaatrik jal paraym pi-aasaa.
Just as a rainbird has affection and thirst for the raindrops.
Kama vile nege wa mvua ana mapenzi na kui cha matone ya mvua.
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥
ji-o meenaa jal maahi ulaasaa.
and just as a fish feels happy in water,
na kama vile samaki anahisi furaha majini,
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸਾ ॥੮॥੧੧॥
naanak har ras pee tariptaasaa. ||8||11||
similarly, O’ Nanak, a devotee of God feels satiated by partaking the nectar of God’s Name. ||8||11||

ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
hath kar marai na laykhai paavai.
Even if a person dies (suffers) while performing torturous yoga exercises and austerities, it is of no account in God’s court.
Hata iwapo mtu afe (ateseke) wakati anafanya mazoezi ya yoga yenye mateso na nidhamu kali, hakuna akaunti yake katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਵੇਸ ਕਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
vays karai baho bhasam lagaavai.
Even if someone may wear religious robes and may smear his body with ashes,
Hata iwapo mtu aweze kuvaa majoho ya kidini na apake mwili wake kwa majivu,
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
naam bisaar bahur pachhutaavai. ||1||
but forsaking Naam, he regrets in the end. ||1||
Lakini kwa kuacha Naam, anajuta mwishowe.
ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੂੰ ਮਨਿ ਸੂਖ ॥
tooN man har jee-o tooN man sookh.
O’ my friend, enshrine God in your mind and enjoy the bliss.
Ee rafiki wangu, thamini Mungu akilini mwako na ufurahie raha tele.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਸਹਹਿ ਜਮ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam bisaar saheh jam dookh. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By forsaking Naam, you would endure the fear and pain of death. ||1||Pause||

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਅਗਰ ਕਪੂਰਿ ॥

If a person is engrossed in worldly pleasures such as using perfumes like sandal, aloe wood, camphor and

Harakati ya Maya; basi hali kuu ya kiroho ipo mbali sana kutoka kwake.
ਨਾਮਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
naam bisaari-ai sabh koorho koor. ||2||
If one forgets Naam, then all else is false and useless.||2||
Iwapo mtu asahau Naam, basi yote mengine ni uongo na bure.
ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
nayjay vaajay takhat salaam.
The lances, marching bands, thrones and the salutes from others,

ਅਧਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਮੁ ॥
aDhkee tarisnaa vi-aapai kaam.
only accentuate the yearning for worldly wealth and lust.
Vinaongeza tu tamaa ya utajiri na ukware wa kidunia.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਚੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੩॥
bin har jaachay bhagat na naam. ||3||
Without seeking God, neither devotional worship nor Naam are attained. ||3||
Bila kumtafuta Mungu, wala ibada ya kujitolea wala Naam haipatikani.
ਵਾਦਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਾ ॥
vaad ahaNkaar naahee parabh maylaa.
Union with God is not attained by scholarly arguments and egotism.
Muungano na Mungu haupatikani kwa majadiliano ya kisomo na ubinafsi.
ਮਨੁ ਦੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥
man day paavahi naam suhaylaa.
It is only by surrendering the mind to God, one receives the blissful Naam.
Ni kwa kusalimisha akili kwa Mungu pekee, ambapo mtu anapokea Naam yenye raha tele.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੪॥
doojai bhaa-ay agi-aan duhaylaa. ||4||
The love of duality leads only to ignorance and misery.||4||
Upendo wa uwili unaongoza tu kwa ujinga na taabu.
ਬਿਨੁ ਦਮ ਕੇ ਸਉਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਹਾਟ ॥
bin dam kay sa-udaa nahee haat.
Just as one cannot buy anything from a shop without money,
Kama vile mtu hawezi kununua chochote kutoka dukani bila pesa,
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਹੀ ਵਾਟ ॥
bin bohith saagar nahee vaat.
and just as one cannot cross the ocean without a ship,
na kama vile mtu hawezi kuvuka bahari bila meli,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਟਿ ॥੫॥
bin gur sayvay ghaatay ghaat. ||5||
similarly, without following the Guru’s teachings there is total loss of spiritual wealth. ||5||
vivyo hivyo, bila kufuata mafundisho ya Guru kuna hasara kamilifu ya utajiri wa kiroho.
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਵਾਟ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥
tis ka-o vaahu vaahu je vaat dikhaavai.
O’ my friend, applaud that Guru who shows the righteous way of life.
Ee rafiki wangu, shangilia Guru huyo anayeonyesha njia ya haki ya maisha.
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
tis ka-o vaahu vaahu je sabad sunaavai.
Eulogize him again and again who recites the divine word of God’s praises.
Msifu yeye tena na tena anayekariri neno takatifu la sifa za Mungu.
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
tis ka-o vaahu vaahu je mayl milaavai. ||6||
Yes, blessed is the Guru who unites us with God.||6||
Ndio, amebarikiwa Guru anayetuunganisha na Mungu.
ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ॥
vaahu vaahu tis ka-o jis kaa ih jee-o.
O’ my friend, highly applaud God who blessed us this life.
Ee rafiki wangu, shangilia zaidi Mungu aliyetubariki maisha haya.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਉ ॥
gur sabdee math amrit pee-o.
Through the Guru’s word Contemplate again and again on God’s virtues and partake the ambrosial nectar of Naam.
Kupitia neno la Guru Tafakari tena na tena kuhusu fadhila za Mungu na ushiriki nekta ya ambrosia ya Naam.
ਨਾਮ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੀਉ ॥੭॥
naam vadaa-ee tuDh bhaanai dee-o. ||7||
O’ God,the glory of Naam is bestowed by Your command.||7||
Ee Mungu, utukufu wa Naam unatawazwa kwa amri yako.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਮਾਇ ॥
naam binaa ki-o jeevaa maa-ay.
O’ my mother, how can I spiritually survive without meditating on Naam?
Ee mama yangu, ninawezaje kuishi kiroho bila kutafakari kuhusu Naam?
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਤੁ ਰਹਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥
an-din japat raha-o tayree sarnaa-ay.
O’ God, bless me, so that I may always remain in Your refuge while meditating on Your Name.
Ee Mungu, nibariki, ili niweze kubaki katika kimbilio chako nikitafakari kuhusu Jina lako.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੨॥
naanak naam ratay pat paa-ay. ||8||12||
O’ Nanak, honor is attained both here and hereafter by remaining imbued with the love of Naam. ||8||12||
Ee Nanak, heshima inapatwa humu na kwa dunia itakayofuata kwa kubaki umejawa na upendo wa Naam.

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਭੇਖੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
ha-umai karat bhaykhee nahee jaani-aa.
No one has ever realized God through egotism and by wearing religious garbs.
Hakuna mtu amewahi kugundua Mungu kupitia ubinafsi na kwa kuvaa mavazi ya kidini.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥
gurmukh bhagat virlay man maani-aa. ||1||
Rare is the Guru’s follower, whose mind is satiated with devotional worship. ||1||
Nadra ni mfuasi wa Guru, ambaye akili yake imetoshelezwa kwa ibada ya kujitolea.
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
ha-o ha-o karat nahee sach paa-ee-ai.
The eternal God is not realized by indulging in self-conceit.
Mungu wa milele hagunduliwi kwa kujishughulisha katika majivuno binafsi. .
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-umai jaa-ay param pad paa-ee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The supreme spiritual state is attained only when ego departs. ||1||pause||
Hali kuu ya kiroho inapatwa tu wakati ubinafsi unaondoka. ||1||Sitisha||
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥
ha-umai kar raajay baho Dhaaveh.
To satisfy their ego, kings and rulers attack other nations.
Kuridhisha ubinafsi wao, wafalme na viongozi wanashambulia mataifa mengine.
ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥
ha-umai khapeh janam mar aavahi. ||2||
Consumed by their ego they keep suffering in the cycles of birth and death. ||2||
Wakivama katika ubinafsi wao wanaendelea kuteseka katika mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.
ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
ha-umai nivrai gur sabad veechaarai.
One who reflects on the Guru’s word dispels his ego.
Yule anayetafakari kuhusu neno la Guru anaondoa ubinafsi wake.
ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥੩॥
chanchal mat ti-aagai panch sanghaarai.||3||
he sheds the mercurial intellect and eradicates the five evil passions. ||3||
Anaondoa akili tete na kuangamiza harara tano mbaya.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥
antar saach sahj ghar aavahi.
Those, within whom dwells the eternal God, enjoy intuitive peace.
Wale, ambao ndani mwao mnaishi Mungu wa milele, wanafurahia amani wa hisia na silika.
ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥੪॥
raajan jaan param gat paavahi. ||4||
By realizing the sovereign God they attain the supreme spiritual state. ||4||
Kwa kumgundua Mungu mwenyezi wanapata hali kuu ya kiroho.
ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
sach karnee gur bharam chukhaavai.
One whose doubts are dispelled by the Guru, meditation on Naam becomes his daily deed,
Yule ambaye shaka zake zimeondolewa na Guru, kutafakari kuhusu Naam kunakuwa kitendo chake cha kila siku.
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
nirbha-o kai ghar taarhee laavai. ||5||
and he always remains attuned to the fearless God. ||5||
na daima anabaki amemakinikia Mungu asiye na hofu.
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
ha-o ha-o kar marnaa ki-aa paavai.
Other than spiritual deterioration, what does one gain by indulging in ego?
Mbali na kudhoofika kiroho, mtu anapata faida gani kwa kujishughulisha katika ubinafsi?
ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਝਗਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
pooraa gur bhaytay so jhagar chukhaavai. ||6||
One who follows the teachings of the perfect Guru puts an end to all the strife of ego. ||6||
Yule anayefuata mafundisho ya Guru kamili anatamatisha ugomvi wote wa ubinafsi.
ਜੇਤੀ ਹੈ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
jaytee hai taytee kihu naahee.
Wandering around to satiate one’s ego does not yield any spiritual gain.
Kuzurura kwote ili kutosheleza ubinafsi wa mtu hakuleti faida yoyote ya kiroho.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਭੇਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੀ ॥੭॥
gurmukh gi-aan bhayt gun gaahee.||7||
The Guru’s followers sing God’s praises by attaing spiritual wisdom from him. |7|
