Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:
ਹਕੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਉਸੁ ਸੂਅਰ ਉਸੁ ਗਾਇ ॥
hak paraa-i-aa naankaa us soo-ar us gaa-ay.
O’ Nanak, to take what rightfully belongs to another, is like a Muslim eating pork, or a Hindu eating beef.
Ee Nanak, kuchukua kile ambacho ni miliki ya mwengine, ni kama Muislamu kula nyama ya nguruwe, ama wahindu kula nyama ya ng’ombe.
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਹਾਮਾ ਤਾ ਭਰੇ ਜਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥
gur peer haamaa taa bharay jaa murdaar na khaa-ay.
Our Guru, our Spiritual Guide, stands by us in God’s court, only if we do not take what belongs to others.
Guru wetu, Mwelekezi wetu wa Kiroho, anasimama nasi katika mahakama ya Mungu, iwapo tu tusichukue miliki ya wengine.
ਗਲੀ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਛੁਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
galee bhisat na jaa-ee-ai chhutai sach kamaa-ay.
By mere talk, people do not earn passage to Heaven. Salvation comes only from the practice of Truth.
Kwa matamshi tu, mtu hapati kivuko kwenda Mbinguni. Wokovu unakuja tu kutoka mazoea ya Ukweli.
ਮਾਰਣ ਪਾਹਿ ਹਰਾਮ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
maaran paahi haraam meh ho-ay halaal na jaa-ay.
As the forbidden foods do not become acceptable by adding spices, similarly byarguments the sinful acts cannot be justified.
Kama vyakula haramu havikubaliki kwa kuongeza viungo, sawia hayo kwa mabishano vitendo vya dhambi haviwezi kuhalalishwa.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗਲੀ ਕੂੜੀਈ ਕੂੜੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak galee koorhee-ee koorho palai paa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, from false talk, only falsehood is obtained.
Ee Nanak, kutoka matamshi ya uongo, udanganyifu tu ndio unapatikana.

Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:
ਪੰਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਵਖਤ ਪੰਜਿ ਪੰਜਾ ਪੰਜੇ ਨਾਉ ॥
panj nivaajaa vakhat panj panjaa panjay naa-o.
There are five prayers and five times of day for prayer; the five have five names.
Kuna maombi tano na nyakati tano kwa siku ya maombi; hiyo tano ina majina tano.
ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਹਲਾਲ ਦੁਇ ਤੀਜਾ ਖੈਰ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
pahilaa sach halaal du-ay teejaa khair khudaa-ay.
Let the first prayer be truthfulness, the second honest living, and the third charity in the Name of God.
Acha ombi la kwanza liwe ukweli, na la pili kuishi kwa ukweli, na la tatu liwe hisani katika Jina la Mungu.
ਚਉਥੀ ਨੀਅਤਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਜਵੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਨਾਇ ॥
cha-uthee nee-at raas man panjvee sifat sanaa-ay.
Let the fourth be the pious thoughts in the mind, and the fifth the praise of God.
Acha la nne liwe fikira takatifu akilini, na la tano liwe sifa kwa Mungu.
ਕਰਣੀ ਕਲਮਾ ਆਖਿ ਕੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਸਦਾਇ ॥
karnee kalmaa aakh kai taa musalmaan sadaa-ay.
Let good deeds be your prayer, and then, you may call yourself a true Muslim.
Acha vitendo vizuri viwe ombi lako, na kisha, unaweza kujiita Muislamu halisi.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇਤੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
naanak jaytay koorhi-aar koorhai koorhee paa-ay. ||3||
O’ Nanak, people without such prayers are false and false is their fame or honor.
Ee Nanak, watu wasio na maombi kama haya sio wa kweli na umaarufu na heshima yao sio ya kweli.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਇਕਿ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਣਜਦੇ ਇਕਿ ਕਚੈ ਦੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
ik ratan padaarath vanjaday ik kachai day vaapaaraa.
Some trade in jewels (of God’s praise), others deal in short lived material wealth.
Wengine wanafanya biashara ya vito (vya sifa za Mungu), wengine wanafanya biashara ya utajiri vifaa visivyodumu.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਤਨ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
satgur tuthai paa-ee-an andar ratan bhandaaraa.
When the True Guru is pleased, we find the treasure of the jewel like Naam, which is already there deep within the self.
Wakati Guru wa kweli amependezwa, tunapata hazina ya Naam kama johari, ambayo tayari ipo ndani kwa kina mwa nafsi ya mtu.
ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਲਧਿਆ ਅੰਧੇ ਭਉਕਿ ਮੁਏ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ॥
vin gur kinai na laDhi-aa anDhay bha-uk mu-ay koorhi-aaraa.
Without the Guru, no one has ever found this treasure of Naam. Many ignorant and false people have died, wandering in search of true wealth of Naam.
Bila Guru, hakuna mtu amewahi kupata hazina hii ya Naam. Watu wengi wajinga na waongo wamekufa, wakizurura wakitafuta utajiri wa kweli wa Naam..
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
manmukh doojai pach mu-ay naa boojheh veechaaraa.
The self-willed people are ruined in duality, because they do not understand spiritual contemplation.
Watu wenye hiari binafsi wanaangamizwa katika uwili, kwa sababu hawaelewi utafakari wa kiroho.
ਇਕਸੁ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥
ikas baajhahu doojaa ko nahee kis agai karahi pukaaraa.
Except the One (God), there is no other at all. Unto whom can they cry?
Isipokuwa yule Mmoja (Mungu), hakuna mwengine hata mmoja. Wataweza kumlilia nani?
ਇਕਿ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਸਦਾ ਭਉਕਦੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਭਰੇ ਤੁਜਾਰਾ ॥
ik nirDhan sadaa bha-ukday iknaa bharay tujaaraa.
Some, being poor in the wealth of Naam, always keep wandering. While others have hearts full with the jewels of Naam.
Wengine, wakiwa maskini wa utajiri wa Naam, daima wanaendelea kuzurura. Wakati wengine wana mioyo iliyojaa vito vya Naam.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਰਾ ॥
vin naavai hor Dhan naahee hor bikhi-aa sabh chhaaraa.
Except God’s Name, there is no other eternal wealth. Everything else is just poison and ashes.
Isipokuwa Jina la Mungu, hakuna utajiri mwingine wa milele. Kila kitu kingine ni sumu na majivu tu.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
naanak aap karaa-ay karay aap hukam savaaranhaaraa. ||7||
O’ Nanak, God Himself acts, and causes others to act; and it is by His own Command, that He embellishes us.
Ee Nanak, Mungu mwenyewe anatenda, na kufanya wengine watende; na ni kwa Amri yake mwenyewe, ambapo anatupamba.

ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵਣੁ ਮੁਸਕਲੁ ਜਾ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
musalmaan kahaavan muskal jaa ho-ay taa musalmaan kahaavai.
It is difficult to be called a true Muslim; if one is a true follower of Islam, then he may be called a true Muslim.
Ni ngumu kuitwa Muislamu halisi; iwapo mtu ni mfuasi halisi wa Uislamu, basi yeye anaweza kuitwa Muislamu halisi.
ਅਵਲਿ ਅਉਲਿ ਦੀਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਮਸਕਲ ਮਾਨਾ ਮਾਲੁ ਮੁਸਾਵੈ ॥
aval a-ul deen kar mithaa maskal maanaa maal musaavai.
First, let him savor the religion of the Prophet as sweet; then, let his pride of his possessions be scraped away by sharing his wealth with the needy.
Kwanza, acha afurahie dini ya Nabii kama tamu; kisha, acha fahari yake ya mali yake iondolewe kwa kugawa utajiri wako na wahitaji.
ਹੋਇ ਮੁਸਲਿਮੁ ਦੀਨ ਮੁਹਾਣੈ ਮਰਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
ho-ay muslim deen muhaanai maran jeevan kaa bharam chukhaavai.
Becoming a true Muslim, with full faith in his Prophet, he should put aside the delusion of life and death.
Kuwa Muislamu halisi, mwenye imani kamili katika Nabii wake, yeye anafaa kutengana na udanganyifu wa uhai na kifo.
ਰਬ ਕੀ ਰਜਾਇ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਮੰਨੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
rab kee rajaa-ay mannay sir upar kartaa mannay aap gavaavai.
He should submit to God’s Will. He should shed his selfishness and conceit, and consider the Creator above all.
Anafaa kujisalimisha kwa Mapenzi ya Mungu. Anafaa kuondoa uchoyo na majivuno yake, na kumfikiria Muumba zaidi ya yote. .
ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਮਿਹਰੰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
ta-o naanak sarab jee-aa mihramat ho-ay ta musalmaan kahaavai. ||1||
O’ Nanak, when he loves and becomes merciful to all beings, only then shall he be called a true Muslim.
Ee Nanak, wakati anapenda na kuwa mwenye huruma kwa viumbe vyote, wakati huo tu ndio ataweza kuitwa Muislamu halisi.

Shalok, by the Fourth Guru:
Shalok, na Guru wa Nne:
ਪਰਹਰਿ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਜਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥
parhar kaam kroDh jhooth nindaa taj maa-i-aa ahaNkaar chukhaavai.
If one renounces one’s lust, anger, falsehood and slander; forsakes love of Maya and eliminates egotistical pride,
Iwapo mtu aondoe ukware, hasira, udanganyifu na kashfa yake; aache upendo wa Maya na kuangamiza fahari yenye ubinafsi.
ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਜੈ ਤਾ ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
taj kaam kaaminee moh tajai taa anjan maahi niranjan paavai.
and abandons lustful attachment to women. Then, while still living in the darkness of Maya (worldly attachments), one can realize the immaculate God.
Na kuacha kiambatisho cha ukware kwa wanawake. Basi, wakati bado anaishi katika giza ya Maya (viambatisho vya kihisia), mtu anaweza kugundua Mungu safi.
ਤਜਿ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਤ ਦਾਰਾ ਤਜਿ ਪਿਆਸ ਆਸ ਰਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
taj maan abhimaan pareet sut daaraa taj pi-aas aas raam liv laavai.
If a person tunes his mind to the love for God by renouncing the concern for honor or dishonor, undue love for children and spouse, and craving for Maya,
Iwapo mtu akaze akili yake kwa upendo wa Mungu kwa kuondoa uhusiano kwa heshima au fedheha, upendo usiofaa kwa watoto na mwenzio wa ndoa, na tamaa ya Maya,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
naanak saachaa man vasai saach sabad har naam samaavai. ||2||
Then, O’ Nanak, the eternal God will come to dwell in his mind, and through the true word of the Guru, he would merge in God’s Name.
Basi, Ee Nanak, Mungu wa milele atakuja kuishi akilini mwake, na kupitia neno la kweli la Guru, ataunganishwa katika Jina la Mungu.
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਰਾਜੇ ਰਯਤਿ ਸਿਕਦਾਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਰਹਸੀਓ ॥
raajay ra-yat sikdaar ko-ay na rahsee-o.
None of the kings, the subjects, or leaders shall remain in this world forever.
Hakuna wafalme, wananchi, ama viongozi watabaki duniani humu milele.
ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਢਹਸੀਓ ॥
hat patan baajaar hukmee dhahsee-o.
The shops, the cities and the streets shall eventually disintegrate, by God’s Command.
Maduka, majiji na mitaa mwishowe itaharibika na kuporomoka, kwa Amri ya Mungu.
ਪਕੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ ॥
pakay bank du-aar moorakh jaanai aapnay.
The foolish human being thinks that these solid and beautiful mansions are his.
Binadamu mpumbavu anadhani ya kwamba haya majumba thabiti mazuri ni yake.
ਦਰਬਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਰੀਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਣੇ ॥
darab bharay bhandaar reetay ik khanay.
But he does not realize that all these mansions, along with the treasures filled with wealth, would be emptied out in an instant.
Lakini hagundui ya kwamba majumba haya yote, pamoja na hazina zilizojaa utajiri, zitafanywa kuwa tupa papo hapo.
ਤਾਜੀ ਰਥ ਤੁਖਾਰ ਹਾਥੀ ਪਾਖਰੇ ॥
taajee rath tukhaar haathee paakhray.
The horses, chariots, camels and elephants with all their decorations;
Farasi, magari ya farasi, ngamia na tembo pamoja na mapambo yao yote;
ਬਾਗ ਮਿਲਖ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਕਿਥੈ ਸਿ ਆਪਣੇ ॥ਤੰਬੂ ਪਲੰਘ ਨਿਵਾਰ ਸਰਾਇਚੇ ਲਾਲਤੀ ॥
baag milakh ghar baar kithai se aapnay.tamboo palangh nivaar saraa-ichay laaltee.
the gardens, lands, houses, possessions, tents, soft beds and satin pavilions, where are those things which he believed to be his own.
Mabustani, vipande vya ardhi, nyumba, mali, hema, vitanda laini na mabanda ya satini, viko wapi vitu hivyo ambavyo aliamini kuwa vyake.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਸਿਨਾਖਤੁ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ॥੮॥
naanak sach daataar sinaakhat kudratee. ||8||
O’ Nanak, only God, the giver of all, is eternal. He is revealed through His nature.
Ee Nanak, ni Mungu pekee, mpaji wa vyote, ambaye ni wa milele. Anadhihirishwa kupitia asili yake.

ਨਦੀਆ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਧੇਣਵਾ ਸੁੰਮ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦੁਧੁ ਘੀਉ ॥
nadee-aa hoveh Dhaynvaa summ hoveh duDh ghee-o.
If all the rivers become cows, and the springs (of water) become milk and ghee;
Iwapo mito yote ikuwe ng’ombe, na chemichemi (ya maji) iwe maziwa na samli;
ਸਗਲੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਕਰ ਹੋਵੈ ਖੁਸੀ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਉ ॥
saglee Dhartee sakar hovai khusee karay nit jee-o.
If the entire earth becomes sugar, beholding these things my mind rejoices every day;
Iwapo dunia nzima ikuwe sukari, ikitazama vitu hivi akili yangu inafurahi kila siku;
