ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
saachaa naam saachai sabad jaanai.
One who realizes the eternal God by reflecting on the Guru’s divine word,

ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੈ ॥
aapai aap milai chookai abhimaanai.
his egotistical pride vanishes and he merges with God
fahari yake ya ubinafsi inapotea naye anaungana na Mungu
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਖਾਨੈ ॥੫॥
gurmukh naam sadaa sadaa vakhaanai. ||5||
Then he always chants God’s Name by following the Guru’s teachings. ||5||
Kisha daima anaimba Jina la Mungu kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
satgur sayvi-ai doojee durmat jaa-ee.
By following the Guru’s teachings, evil intellect of love for Maya vanishes,
Kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, uwekevu mwovu wa upendo wa Maya unapotea,
ਅਉਗਣ ਕਾਟਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਮਤਿ ਖਾਈ ॥
a-ugan kaat paapaa mat khaa-ee.
all sins are erased and the sinful intellect is eradicated;
dhambi zote zinafutwa na uwekevu wa dhambi unatokomezwa;
ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੬॥
kanchan kaa-i-aa jotee jot samaa-ee. ||6||
body remains pure like gold and soul remains merged with the Divine Light. ||6||
Mwili unabaki safi kama dhahabu na roho inabaki imeunganishwa na Mwanga Mtakatifu.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
satgur mili-ai vadee vadi-aa-ee.
By meeting true Guru and by following his teachings one receives great glory.
Kwa kukutana na Guru wa kweli na kwa kufuata mafundisho yake mtu anapokea utukufu mkuu.
ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
dukh kaatai hirdai naam vasaa-ee.
The Guru eradicates his misery and enshrines God’s Name in his mind.
Guru anatokomeza taabu yake na kuthamini Jina la Mungu akilini mwake.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
naam ratay sadaa sukh paa-ee. ||7||
Upon being imbued with God’s Name, one enjoys bliss forever. ||7||
Anapopenyezwa na Jina la Mungu, mtu anafurahia raha tele milele.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

One’s conduct becomes immaculate by following the Guru’s teachings.
Tabia ya mtu inakuwa safi kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
gurmat maani-aa mokh du-aar.
One finds the way to freedom from vices by following the Guru’s teachings.
Mtu anapata njia ya uhuru kutoka maovu kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਰੈ ਸਾਧਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧॥੩॥
naanak gurmat maani-aa parvaarai saaDhaar. ||8||1||3||
O’ Nanak, by following the Guru’s teachings, one reforms his entire family. ||8||1||3||

ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਖਾਇ ਹਉ ਮੇਟੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਗੀਤ ਗਵਈਆ ॥
aapai aap khaa-ay ha-o maytai an-din har ras geet gava-ee-aa.
One who always sings God’s praises with joy, eliminates his ego by merging his own self with God.
Yule ambaye daima anaimba sifa za Mungu kwa furaha, anaondoa ubinafsi wake kwa kuunganisha nafsi yake na Mungu.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚੈ ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਈਆ ॥੧॥
gurmukh parchai kanchan kaa-i-aa nirbha-o jotee jot mila-ee-aa. ||1||
One who follows the Guru’s teachings and reposes full faith in God, his body becomes pure like gold and his soul merges in the fear-free Divine Light. ||1||
Yule anayefuata mafundisho ya Guru na kuweka imani kamili kwa Mungu, mwili wake unakuwa safi kama dhahabu na roho yake inaunganishwa katika Mwanga Mtakatifu usio na woga.
ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਰਮਈਆ ॥
mai har har naam aDhaar rama-ee-aa.
The all pervading God’s Name has become the main support of my life.
Jina la Mungu anayeenea kote limekuwa nguzo kuu ya maisha yangu.
ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਠ ਪੜਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
khin pal reh na saka-o bin naavai gurmukh har har paath parha-ee-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
From the Guru, I have learned about God and now without meditating on His Name, I cannot spiritually survive even for a moment. ||1||Pause||

ਏਕੁ ਗਿਰਹੁ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਤਸਕਰ ਪੰਚ ਚੋਰ ਲਗਈਆ ॥
ayk girahu das du-aar hai jaa kay ahinis taskar panch chor laga-ee-aa.
The human body is like a house with ten doors through which the five thieves (lust, anger, greed, worldly attachment and ego) always break in.
Mwili wa binadamu ni kama nyumba yenye milango kumi ambayo kuipitia wezi watano (ukware, hasira, tamaa, kiambatisho cha kidunia na ubinafsi) daima wanavunja ili kuingia.
ਧਰਮੁ ਅਰਥੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲੇ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਈਆ ॥੨॥
Dharam arath sabh hir lay jaaveh manmukh anDhulay khabar na pa-ee-aa. ||2||
They steal away the entire wealth of righteousness, but the spiritually ignorant self-willed people do not even know about it. ||2||
Wanapora utajiri mzima wa uadilifu, lakini watu wajinga wa kiroho wenye hiari binafsi hata hawajui kuihusu.
ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋਟੁ ਬਹੁ ਮਾਣਕਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਜਾਗੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਤਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਈਆ ॥
kanchan kot baho maanak bhari-aa jaagay gi-aan tat liv la-ee-aa.
The human body is like a fort of gold with many precious jewels-like virtues in it, those who remain spiritually alert by attuning to the source of divine wisdom.
Mwili wa binadamu ni kama ngome ya dhahabu yenye fadhila nyingi zenye thamani kama vito ndani mwake, wale wanaobaki wametahadhari kiroho kwa kumakinikia chanzo cha hekima takatifu.
ਤਸਕਰ ਹੇਰੂ ਆਇ ਲੁਕਾਨੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਪਈਆ ॥੩॥
taskar hayroo aa-ay lukaanay gur kai sabad pakarh banDh pa-ee-aa. ||3||
Through the Guru’s word, they catch and bind down these thieves and robbers (vices) who hide out in the body. ||3||
Kwa neno la Guru, wanakamata na kufunga wezi na waporaji hao (maovu) wanaojificha katika mwili.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੋਤੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਖੇਵਟੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਈਆ ॥
har har naam pot bohithaa khayvat sabad gur paar langh-ee-aa.
God’s Name is like a ship and the Guru’s word is like the boatman who ferries one across the worldly ocean of vices.
Jina la Mungu ni kama meli na neno la Guru ni kama nahodha anayevukisha mtu bahari ya kidunia ya dhambi.
ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਚੋਰੁ ਲਗਈਆ ॥੪॥
jam jaagaatee nayrh na aavai naa ko taskar chor laga-ee-aa. ||4||
Neither the demon of death, the tax collector, comes near him and he is not robbed of his wealth of Naam by thieves (vices). ||4||
Pepo wa kifo, mkusanya-kodi, hawamkaribii naye haporwi utajiri wake wa Naam na wezi (maovu).
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਹਤੇ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਲਹੀਆ ॥
har gun gaavai sadaa din raatee mai har jas kahtay ant na lahee-aa.
I always keeps singing the praises of God and while singing His praises, I cannot find the limit of His virtues.
Daima naendelea kuimba sifa za Mungu na wakati naimba sifa Zake, siwezi kupata kikomo cha fadhila Zake.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਮਿਲਉ ਗੋੁਪਾਲ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ਬਜਈਆ ॥੫॥
gurmukh manoo-aa ikat ghar aavai mila-o gopaal neesaan baja-ee-aa. ||5||
By following the Guru’s teachings, my mind remains attuned to God’s Name; I say without any hesitation that I will realize the protector of the universe. ||5||
Kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, akili yangu inabaki imemakinikia Jina la Mungu; nasema bila kusita kwokwote kwamba nitagundua mlinzi wa ulimwengu.
ਨੈਨੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਈਆ ॥
nainee daykh daras man tariptai sarvan banee gur sabad suna-ee-aa.
Beholding the blessed vision of God with my eyes, my mind remains satisfied; my earskeep listening to the Guru’s divine words.
Kwa kutazama mwono uliobarikiwa wa Mungu kwa macho yangu, akili yangu inabaki imeridhishwa; masikio yangu yanaendelea kusikiliza maneno takatifu ya Guru.
ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਆਤਮ ਦੇਵ ਹੈ ਭੀਨੇ ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਰਵਈਆ ॥੬॥
sun sun aatam dayv hai bheenay ras ras raam gopaal rava-ee-aa. ||6||
By always listening to God’s praises, my soul remains immersed in the elixir of Naam, and blissfully I keep remembering God of the Universe. ||6||
Kwa kusikiliza sifa za Mungu daima, roho yangu inabaki imevama katika dawa ya Naam, na kwa raha tele naendelea kumkumbuka Mungu wa Ulimwengu.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਗੁਣੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੀਆ ॥
tarai gun maa-i-aa mohi vi-aapay turee-aa gun hai gurmukh lahee-aa.
People living under the three modes of Maya remain engrossed in the love for Maya; but the Guru’s follower receives the higher spiritual state.
Watu wanaoishi chini ya mbinu tatu za Maya wanabaki wamevama katika upendo wa Maya; lakini mfuasi wa Guru anapokea hali ya juu zaidi ya kiroho.
ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵੈ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਸਰਈਆ ॥੭॥
ayk darisat sabh sam kar jaanai nadree aavai sabh barahm pasra-ee-aa. ||7||
He looks upon all with same respect, because to him God seems pervading everywhere . ||7||
Yeye anawatazama wote kwa heshima sawa, kwa sababu kwake Mungu anaonekana akienea kote.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਈਆ ॥
raam naam hai jot sabaa-ee gurmukh aapay alakh lakha-ee-aa.
A Guru’s follower comprehends the incomprehensible God, and realizes that the light of God’s Name is permeating everywhere.
Mfuasi wa Guru anaelewa Mungu asiyeweza kueleweka, na kugundua kwamba mwanga wa Jina la Mungu unapenyeza kote.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਈਆ ॥੮॥੧॥੪॥
naanak deen da-i-aal bha-ay hai bhagat bhaa-ay har naam sama-ee-aa. ||8||1||4||
O’ Nanak, those on whom the merciful God of the meek becomes gracious, through loving devotion, they remain absorbed in God’s Name. ||8||1||4||
Ee Nanak, wale ambao Mungu mwenye huruma wa wapole anakuwa mwenye neema kwao, kwa ujitoaji wa upendo, wanabaki wamevama katika Jina la Mungu.

har har naam seetal jal Dhi-aavahu har chandan vaas suganDh ganDh-ee-aa.
O’ my friends, always remember God’s Name which is soothing like cold water; God is like Sandalwood tree, whose fragrance makes all vegetation fragrant.
Ee marafiki wangu, kumbukeni Jina la Mungu daima ambalo ni kitulizo kama maji baridi; Mungu ni kama mti wa misandali, ambayo manukato yake yanafanya mazingira yote kunukia vizuri.
