ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਾਧ ਮਗ ਸੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bayd puraan saaDh mag sun kar nimakh na har gun gaavai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Even after listening to Vedas, Puranas (holy scriptures) and the ways described by the saints, he does not sing God’s praises even for a moment.||1||Pause||
Hata baada ya kusikiliza Vedas, Puranas (maandishi takatifu) na njia zilizoelezwa na watakatifu, yeye haimbi sifa za Mungu hata kwa muda mfupi. ||1||Sitisha||
ਦੁਰਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਪਾਇ ਮਾਨਸ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਿਰਾਵੈ ॥
durlabh dayh paa-ay maanas kee birthaa janam siraavai.
Having obtained this human body so difficult to obtain, he is letting it pass uselessly.
Akiwa amepata mwili huu wa kibinadamu ambao ni ngumu sana kupata, anauacha uende bure.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਮਹਾ ਸੰਕਟ ਬਨ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰੁਚ ਉਪਜਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
maa-i-aa moh mahaa sankat ban taa si-o ruch upjaavai. ||1||
This world is filled with Maya to the brim yet he is in love with it. ||1||
Dunia hii imejawa na Maya hadi ukingoni na bado anapendezwa nayo.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
antar baahar sadaa sang parabh taa si-o nayhu na laavai.
He does not enshrine love for God, who is always nearby, within and without.
Yeye hathamini upendo wa Mungu, ambaye daima yu karibu, ndani mwake na nje.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨॥੬॥
naanak mukat taahi tum maanhu jih ghat raam samaavai. ||2||6||
O’ Nanak, consider only that person as liberated from the grip of Maya whose heart is filled with God.||2||6||

O’ the Saintly people, there is peace in the refuge of God.
Ee watu Watakatifu, kuna amani katika kimbilio cha Mungu.
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਪੜੇ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਗੁਨ ਸਿਮਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bayd puraan parhay ko ih gun simray har ko naamaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The real advantage of reading (holy books, such as) Vedas and Puranas is that one starts meditating on God’s Name with fervor. ||1||Pause||
Faida halisi ya kusoma (vitabutakatifu, kama vile) Vedas na Puranas ni kwamba mtu anaanza kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu kwa hamaki. ||1||Sitisha||
ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਅਉ ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
lobh moh maa-i-aa mamtaa fun a-o bikhi-an kee sayvaa.
Greed, love for Maya, emotional attachments, evil pursuits:
Tamaa, upendo wa Maya, viambatisho vya kihisia, harakati ovu:
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਪਰਸੈ ਜਿਹ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਸੋ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਦੇਵਾ ॥੧॥
harakh sog parsai jih naahan so moorat hai dayvaa.||1||
anyone who is not influenced by these vices or by pleasure or pain is an embodiment of God. ||1||
Yeyote ambaye hashawishiwi na maovu haya ama kwa raha au uchungu ni udhihirisho wa kimwili wa Mungu.
ਸੁਰਗ ਨਰਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਿਖੁ ਏ ਸਭ ਤਿਉ ਕੰਚਨ ਅਰੁ ਪੈਸਾ ॥
surag narak amrit bikh ay sabh ti-o kanchan ar paisaa.
Heaven and hell, ambrosial nectar and poison, gold and copper, these are all alike to such a person.
Mbinguni na jehanamu, nekta ya ambrosia na sumu, dhahabu na shaba, yote haya ni sawa kwa mtu kama huyo.
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਏ ਸਮ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਤੈਸਾ ॥੨॥
ustat nindaa ay sam jaa kai lobh moh fun taisaa. ||2||
For this person, praise and slander are all the same, as are greed and attachment. ||2||
Kwa mtu huyu, sifa na uchongezi wote ni sawa, ndivyo ilivyo tamaa na kiambatisho.
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਏ ਬਾਧੇ ਜਿਹ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਤਿਹ ਤੁਮ ਜਾਨਉ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
dukh sukh ay baaDhay jih naahan tih tum jaan-o gi-aanee.
Consider that person divinely wise who is not bound by joy or sorrow.
Fikiria mtu huyo kuwa na hekima takatifu ambaye hajatiishwa kwa furaha au huzuni.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨਉ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ॥੩॥੭॥
naanak mukat taahi tum maan-o ih biDh ko jo paraanee. ||3||7||
O’ Nanak, the person who adopts such a conduct in life, deem him liberated from worldly bonds and vices.||3||7||
Ee Nanak, mtu anayechukua mtindo kama huo wa maisha, mfikirie kuwa amekombolewa kutoka vifungo na maovu ya kidunia.

O’ mind, why are you being insane?
Ee akili, kwa nini unakuwa mwendawazimu?
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅਉਧ ਘਟੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੈ ਭਇਓ ਲੋਭ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਉਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ahinis a-oDh ghatai nahee jaanai bha-i-o lobh sang ha-uraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One does not realize that his life-span is decreasing day and night and in the pursuit of greed he is experiencing spiritual decline. ||1||Pause||
Mtu hagundui kwamba muda wake wa kuishi unapungua mchana na usiku na katika harakati za tamaa anadhoofika kiroho. ||1||Sitisha||
ਜੋ ਤਨੁ ਤੈ ਅਪਨੋ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਅਰੁ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
jo tan tai apno kar maani-o ar sundar garih naaree.
Your body and your beautiful wife which you consider as your own,
Mwili wako na mke wako mrembo ambaye unafikiria kuwa wako,
ਇਨ ਮੈਂ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਰੇ ਨਾਹਨਿ ਦੇਖੋ ਸੋਚ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
in maiN kachh tayro ray naahan daykho soch bichaaree. ||1||
none of these is yours to keep forever; think it over carefully. ||1||
hakuna kati ya hayo ambayo ni yako milele; fikiria kuihusu kwa umakini.
ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਪਨੋ ਤੈ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
ratan janam apno tai haari-o gobind gat nahee jaanee.
You have lost your precious human life and have not understood the essence of the Master of the universe.
Umepoteza maisha ya kibinadamu yenye thamani na hujaelewa kiini cha Bwana wa ulimwengu.
ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਲੀਨ ਭਇਓ ਚਰਨਨ ਸਿਂਉ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਅਉਧ ਸਿਰਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
nimakh na leen bha-i-o charnan siN-o birthaa a-oDh siraanee. ||2||
Even for an instant, you have not attuned yourself to devotional worship of God and you have wasted your life. ||2||
Hata kwa muda mfupi, hujajimakinisha kwa ibada ya kujitolea kwa Mungu na umeharibu maisha yako bure.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਨਰੁ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
kaho naanak so-ee nar sukhee-aa raam naam gun gaavai.
Nanak says, that person dwells in peace who sings praises of God.
Nanak anasema, mtu huyo anaishi kwa amani anayeimba sifa za Mungu.
ਅਉਰ ਸਗਲ ਜਗੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਪਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥੮॥
a-or sagal jag maa-i-aa mohi-aa nirbhai pad nahee paavai. ||3||8||
The rest of the world is deceived by the enticement of Maya and never attains the spiritual state where there is no fear. ||3||8||
Dunia nzima iliyobaki inadanganywa kwa uvutio wa Maya na kamwe haipati hali ya kiroho ambapo hakuna hofu.

O’ spiritually ignorant person, be afraid of sins.
Ee mtu mjinga wa kiroho, ogopa dhambi.
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਗਲ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਤੁਮ ਪਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
deen da-i-aal sagal bhai bhanjan saran taahi tum par ray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
To save yourself from the sins, seek the refuge of God who is merciful to the meek and dispeller of all fears. ||1||Pause||
Ili kujiokoa kutoka dhambi, tafuta kimbilio cha Mungu ambaye ana huruma kwa wapole na ndiye anayeondoa hofu yote. ||1||Sitisha||
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਜਾਸ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੀਐ ਮੋ ਧਰੁ ਰੇ ॥
bayd puraan jaas gun gaavat taa ko naam hee-ai mo Dhar ray.
a Enshrine God’s Name in your heart whose praise is sung (written) in the the holy books, such as the Vedas and Puranas.
Thamini Jina la Mungu moyoni mwako ambaye sifa yake inaimbwa (imeandikwa) katika vitabu takatifu, kama vile Vedas na Puranas.
ਪਾਵਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਗਤਿ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਕਸਮਲ ਸਭ ਹਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
paavan naam jagat mai har ko simar simar kasmal sabh har ray. ||1||
Yes, all-purifying in the world is the Name of God; meditate on it and eradicate your sins. ||1||
Ndio, linatakasa vyote duniani Jina la Mungu; tafakari kulihusu na uangamize dhambi zako.
ਮਾਨਸ ਦੇਹ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਕਛੂ ਉਪਾਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਾ ਕਰੁ ਰੇ ॥
maanas dayh bahur nah paavai kachhoo upaa-o mukat kaa kar ray.
You shall not receive this human life again; make some effort to achieve liberation!
Wewe hutapokea maisha ya kibinadamu tena; fanya jitihada kufanikisha ukombozi!
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਤ ਗਾਇ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਮੈ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰ ਕੈ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥੯॥੨੫੧॥
naanak kahat gaa-ay karunaa mai bhav saagar kai paar utar ray. ||2||9||251|
Nanak says, O’ human being sing praises of that merciful God and swim across the dreadful worldly ocean. ||2||9||251||

One eternal God, the Creative Being and is realized by the Guru’s Grace:

ਨਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
niDh siDh nirmal naam beechaar.
Reflecting on immaculate Naam in itself is a treasure and miraculous power.
Kutafakari kwa Naam safi kwenyewe ni hazina na nguvu ya kimiujiza.
ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
pooran poor rahi-aa bikh maar.
After my attachment to poisonous Maya is destroyed, I realize the presence of the Perfect God everywhere.
Baada ya kuangamizwa kwa kiambatisho changu kwa Maya yenye sumu, nagundua uwepo wa Mungu kamili kila mahali.
ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਛੂਟੀ ਬਿਮਲ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥
tarikutee chhootee bimal majhaar.
I have risen above the three modes of Maya (power, vice and virtue).
