ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਤੁਲੁ ਨ ਤੋਲੀਐ ਕਥਨਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
saahib atul na tolee-ai kathan na paa-i-aa jaa-ay. ||5||
God is unassessable, cannot be assessed and cannot be realized by mere talks.
Mungu hawezi kutahiniwa, hawezi kuchunguzwa wala hawezi kugunduliwa kwa maongezi tu.

ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਆਏ ਵਜਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ॥
vaapaaree vanjaari-aa aa-ay vajahu likhaa-ay.
All Human beings come in this world with a pre-ordained number of breaths, just as a peddler comes to a city with the pre authorized capital.
Binadamu wote wanakuja duniani humu na nambari ya pumzi zilizoagiziwa mapema, kama tu mchuuzi anavyokuja kwenye jiji na rasilimali iliyoidhinishwa mapema.

ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਲਾਹਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
kaar kamaaveh sach kee laahaa milai rajaa-ay.
They, who do the deeds of truth (meditate on God’s Name), earn the wealth of Naam as per God’s will.
Wale, wanaofanya vitendo vya ukweli (kutafakari kuhusu jina la Mungu), wanapata utajiri wa Naam kulingana na wasia wa Mungu.

ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਇ ॥੬॥
poonjee saachee gur milai naa tis til na tamaa-ay. ||6||
However, the true wealth of Naam is obtained only by those who meet the Guru, and they don’t have even an iota of personal desire or greed.
Hata hivyo, utajiri wa kweli wa Naam unaptwa tu na wale wanaokutana na Guru, na hawana hata chembe cha hamu za kibinafsi au tamaa.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋੁਲਾਇਸੀ ਸਚੁ ਤਰਾਜੀ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
gurmukh tol tolaa-isee sach taraajee tol.
A Guru’s follower would always keep assessing his wealth of truth (conduct) according to the Guru’s teachings.
Mfuasi wa Guru daima anaendelea kuchunguza utajiri wake wa Ukweli (tabia) kulingana na mafundisho ya Guru.

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਠਾਕੀ ਸਚੁ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
aasaa mansaa mohnee gur thaakee sach bol.
Hope and desire which allure our minds are restrained by the Guru’s true Word.
Tumaini na tamaa zinazovutia akili zetu zinazuiliwa na Neno la kweli la Guru.

ਆਪਿ ਤੁਲਾਏ ਤੋਲਸੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥੭॥
aap tulaa-ay tolsee pooray pooraa tol. ||7||
God Himself would weigh (and examine that person’s conduct), then He would find that person of perfect weight (completely worthy of union with Him).
Mungu mwenyewe angepima (na kuchunguza tabia ya mtu), kisha angepata mtu huyo wa uzito nzuri kabisa (anafaa kabisa muungano naye).

ਕਥਨੈ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਨਾ ਪੜਿ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਭਾਰ ॥
kathnai kahan na chhutee-ai naa parh pustak bhaar.
No one is saved by mere talk and speech, nor by reading loads of books.
Hakuna mtu anakombolewa kwa kuongea tu na hotuba, wala kwa kusoma vitabu vingi.

ਕਾਇਆ ਸੋਚ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਿਆਰ ॥
kaa-i-aa soch na paa-ee-ai bin har bhagat pi-aar.
We cannot realize God by mere ablution of the body, without true devotion and love for Him.
Hatuwezi kugundua Mungu kwa kuoga kwa mwili tu, bila kujitolea kwa kweli na upendo kwa Mungu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੮॥੯॥
naanak naam na veesrai maylay gur kartaar. ||8||9||
O’ Nanak, the person who does not forget Naam, Guru will unite him with God.
Ee Nanak, mtu ambaye hasahau Naam, Guru atamuunganisha na Mungu.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਰਤਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
satgur pooraa jay milai paa-ee-ai ratan beechaar.
If we meet the perfect Guru, then we obtain his precious teachings.
Iwapo tutakutana na Guru kamili, basi tunapokea mafundisho yake ya awali.

ਮਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਰਬ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
man deejai gur aapnay paa-ee-ai sarab pi-aar.
When we completely surrender our mind to our Guru; we find the universal love.
Wakati tunasalimu akili yetu kikamilifu kwa Guru wetu; tunapata upendo mzima.

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਵਗਣ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
mukat padaarath paa-ee-ai avgan maytanhaar. ||1||
Then we obtain the commodity of God’s Name, which brings us salvation and destroy our vices.
Kisha tunapaya bidhaa ya Jina la Mungu, ambayo inatuletea wokovu na kuangamiza dhambi zetu.

ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
bhaa-ee ray gur bin gi-aan na ho-ay.
O’ Brother, without The Guru, divine knowledge is not obtained.
Ee ndugu, bila Guru, maarifa takatifu hayawezi kupatwa.

ਪੂਛਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਨਾਰਦੈ ਬੇਦ ਬਿਆਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
poochhahu barahmay naardai bayd bi-aasai ko-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Go and ask Brahma, Naarad and Vyas, the writer of Vedas, they will agree,
Nenda ukaulize Brahma, Naarad na Vyas, mwandishi wa Vedas, wanakubali,

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧੁਨਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
gi-aan Dhi-aan Dhun jaanee-ai akath kahaavai so-ay.
that it is only through the Guru’s word that we understand divine knowledge and meditation on Naam. The Guru makes us recite God’s indescribable virtues.
Ya kwamba ni kupitia tu neno la Guru ambapo tunaelewa maarifa takatifu na kutafakari kuhusu Naam. Guru anatufanya tukariri fadhila zisizoelezeka za Mungu.

ਸਫਲਿਓ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ਛਾਵ ਘਣੇਰੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
safli-o birakh haree-aavlaa chhaav ghanayree ho-ay.
Like a Green, fruit-bearing Tree with abundance of shade, the Guru is the provider of peace and comfort.
Kama mti wa kijani kibichi unaozaa matunda na una kivuli tele, Guru ni mtoa wa amani na starehe.

ਲਾਲ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਮਾਣਕੀ ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥
laal javayhar maankee gur bhandaarai so-ay. ||2||
All the precious divine wisdom comes from the Guru.
Hekima yote takatifu yenye thamana inatoka kwa Guru.

ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
gur bhandaarai paa-ee-ai nirmal naam pi-aar.
Only from the Guru we obtain love and devotion for the immaculate Naam.
Ni kutoka kwa Guru tu ambapo tunapata upendo na kujitolea kwa Naam safi.

ਸਾਚੋ ਵਖਰੁ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥
saacho vakhar sanchee-ai poorai karam apaar.
By the grace of the infinite God, we acquire the true capital of His Name.
Kwa neema ya Mungu asiye na mwisho, tunapata rasilimali ya kweli ya Jina lake.

ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟਣੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਸੁਰ ਸੰਘਾਰੁ ॥੩॥
sukh-daata dukh maytno satgur asur sanghaar. ||3||
The true Guru is the Giver of peace, the eliminator of pain and anguish, and slayer of demons like lust, anger, and greed.
Guru wa kweli ni mtoa wa amani, anayeondoa uchungu na taabu, na muuaji wa pepo kama usherati, hasira na tamaa.

ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ ਨਾ ਕੰਧੀ ਨਾ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
bhavjal bikham daraavno naa kanDhee naa paar.
This world is like a vast difficult and dreadful ocean of vices, which has no shore on either sides.
Dunia hii ni kama bahari kubwa na ya kuogofya ya dhambi, ambayo haina ukingo katika pande zote mbili.

ਨਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਾ ਤੁਲਹੜਾ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਵੰਝੁ ਮਲਾਰੁ ॥
naa bayrhee naa tulharhaa naa tis vanjh malaar.
And there is no boat, no raft, no pole, and no boatman to help us cross this world ocean.
Na hakuna mashua, hakuna rafta, hakuna nguzo na hakuna nahodha wa kutusaidia kuvuka bahari dunia hii.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੈ ਕਾ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੁ ॥੪॥
satgur bhai kaa bohithaa nadree paar utaar. ||4||
Only with the Blessings and Grace of The True Guru, that we can cross over this dreadful ocean.
Ni kwa baraka na neema ya Guru wa kweli pekee, ambapo tunaweza kuvuka bahari hii inayoogofya.

ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
ik til pi-aaraa visrai dukh laagai sukh jaa-ay.
If I forget my beloved (God), even for a moment, peace and comfort depart, and pain and suffering sets in.
Iwapo nisahau mpendwa (Mungu) wangu, hata kwa muda mfupi, amani na starehe inaondoka, na uchungu na kuteseka kunanikumba.

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜਲਉ ਜਲਾਵਣੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪੈ ਰਸਾਇ ॥
jihvaa jala-o jalaavanee naam na japai rasaa-ay.
Therefore, may that tongue burn down which does not utter God’s Name.
Hivyo basi, ulimi huo uchomeke ambao hautamki Jina la Mungu.

ਘਟੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲੋ ਜਮੁ ਪਕੜੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥੫॥
ghat binsai dukh aglo jam pakrhai pachhutaa-ay. ||5||
When the body of a person perishes, that person suffers great pain and caught by the demon of Death, he regret and repents in vain.
Wakati mwili wa mtu unaangamia, mtu huyo anateseka kwa uchungu mkuu na akishikwa na pepo wa kifo, anajuta na kutubu bure.

ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਗਏ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਨ ਸਾਥਿ ॥
mayree mayree kar ga-ay tan Dhan kalat na saath.
Many have departed from the world crying ‘this is mine, that is mine,’ yet neither their body, nor wealth, nor their wife accompanied them (after death).
Wengi wameondoka kutoka dunia hii wakilia “hii ni yangu, hiyo ni yangu,” ilhali sio mwili wao, wala utajiri, wala mke yataambatana nao (baada ya kifo).

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਭੂਲੋ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਆਥਿ ॥
bin naavai Dhan baad hai bhoolo maarag aath.
Without God’s Name, worldly wealth is useless and those who run after it, stray from the righteous path.
Bila jina la Mungu, utajiri wa kidunia ni bure na wale wanaoukimbilia, wanapotoka kutoka njia ya haki.

ਸਾਚਉ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਕਥੋ ਕਾਥਿ ॥੬॥
saacha-o saahib sayvee-ai gurmukh aktho kaath. ||6||
We should always remember the eternal Master. The indescribable virtues of God can only be described through the Guru’s teachings.
Daima tunafaa kumkumbuka Bwana wa milele. Fadhila zisizoelezeka za Mungu zinaweza tu kuelezwa kupitia mafundisho ya Guru.

ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
aavai jaa-ay bhavaa-ee-ai pa-i-ai kirat kamaa-ay.
One continues in the cycles of birth and death as per one’s past deeds
Mtu anaendelea katika mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa kulingana na vitendo vyake vya awali.

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਮੇਟੀਐ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
poorab likhi-aa ki-o maytee-ai likhi-aa laykh rajaa-ay.
How can this destiny based on one’s past deeds be erased when it is written by God’ will?
Hatima hii ambayo msingi wake ni vitendo vya awali vya mtu inawezaje kufutwa wakati imeandikwa katika wasia wa Mungu?

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੭॥
bin har naam na chhutee-ai gurmat milai milaa-ay. ||7||
Without God’s Name one cannot be saved from the cycle of birth and death. Only through Guru’s teachings one can be united with God.
Bila Jina la Mungu mtu hawezi kukombolewa kutoka mzunguko wa kuzaliwa na kufa. Ni kupitia tu mafundisho ya Guru ambapo mtu anaweza kuunganishwa na Mungu.

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਰਾਨੁ ॥
tis bin mayraa ko nahee jis kaa jee-o paraan.
Without God, I don’t have anyone to call my own, to Him belongs my body and soul.
Bila Mungu, sina mwengine wa kumwita wangu, Mungu anamiliki mwili wangu na roho yangu.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਉ ਲੋਭੁ ਜਲਉ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa jal bala-o lobh jala-o abhimaan.
Let this ego, attachment, greed, and pride be burnt to ashes (which have separated me from my God)
Acha huu ubinafsi, kiambatanisho, tamaa na kiburi kichomwe kukuwe majivu (ambavyo vimenitenganisha kutoka kwa Mungu wangu)

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੮॥੧੦॥
naanak sabad veechaaree-ai paa-ee-ai gunee niDhaan. ||8||10||
O’ Nanak, it is only by reflecting and following the Guru’s teachings that we can realize God, who is the treasure of all virtues.
Ee Nanak, ni kwa kutafakari tu na kufuata mafundisho ya Guru ambapo tunaweza kugundua Mungu, ambaye ni hazina ya fadhila zote.

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਜਲ ਕਮਲੇਹਿ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee jal kamlayhi.
O’ my mind, have that kind of love for God like the lotus flower has for water.
Ee akili yangu, kuwa na aina hiyo ya upendo kwa Mungu kama ua la lotus linalo kwa maji.

ਲਹਰੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਛਾੜੀਐ ਭੀ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਅਸਨੇਹਿ ॥
lahree naal pachhaarhee-ai bhee vigsai asnayhi.
Tossed about by the waves, it still blossoms with love.
Likisukumwa na mawimbi, bado linanawiri kwa upendo.

ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਮਰਣੁ ਤਿਨੇਹਿ ॥੧॥
jal meh jee-a upaa-ay kai bin jal maran tinayhi. ||1||
Like lotus flowers, God has created some creatures in water who cannot survive without water.
Kama maua ya lotus, Mungu ameumba viumbe vingine majini ambao hawawezi kuishi bila maji.
