ਜਾਨੀ ਘਤਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਆਇਆ ਰੁੰਨੇ ਵੀਰ ਸਬਾਏ ॥
jaanee ghat chalaa-i-aa likhi-aa aa-i-aa runnay veer sabaa-ay.
When God’s preordained command arrives, the soul is driven away and all the close relatives cry in mourning.
Wakati amri ya Mungu iliyoagiziwa mapema inawasili, roho inaondolewa na jamaa wote wa karibu wanalia katika kuomboleza.
ਕਾਂਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਥੀਆ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਜਾਂ ਦਿਨ ਪੁੰਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਏ ॥
kaaN-i-aa hans thee-aa vaychhorhaa jaaN din punnay mayree maa-ay.
O’ my mother, when one’s days of life are over, the soul and the body are separated forever.
Ee mama yangu, wakati siku za mtu za maisha zinakwisha, roho na mwili unatenganishwa milele.
ਜੇਹਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤੇਹਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੇਹਾ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
jayhaa likhi-aa tayhaa paa-i-aa jayhaa purab kamaa-i-aa.
One receives what is written in his destiny in accordance with his past deeds.
Mtu anapokea kile ambacho kimeandikwa katika hatima yake kulingana na vitendo vyake vya awali.
ਧੰਨੁ ਸਿਰੰਦਾ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
Dhan sirandaa sachaa paatisaahu jin jag DhanDhai laa-i-aa. ||1||
Praisworthy is the eternal God, the soverign king who has engaged the beings of the entire world to their tasks. ||1||
Mungu wa milele anastahili sifa, mfalme mwenyezi ambaye amehusisha viumbe wa dunia nzima kwa kazi zao.
ਜੇ ਲਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jay lakh karam kamaavahee bin gur anDhi-aaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Even if one performs millions of rituals, without the Guru’s teachings the darkness of ignorance continues.
Hata iwapo mtu afanye mamilioni ya mila, bila mafundisho ya Guru giza ya ujinga unasalia.
ਅੰਧੇ ਅਕਲੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
anDhay aklee baahray ki-aa tin si-o kahee-ai.
What can we say to those who are spiritually blind and devoid of wisdom?
Tunaweza kuambia nini wale ambao ni vipofu kiroho na hakuna hekima yoyote?
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੰਥੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਈ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਿਰਬਹੀਐ ॥੨॥
bin gur panth na soojh-ee kit biDh nirabahee-ai. ||2||
Without the teachings of Guru, they cannot determine the right way of life. How can a righteous person get along with them?
Bila mafundisho ya Guru, hawawezi kutathmini njia sahihi ya maisha. Mtu mwadilifu anawezaje kuelewana nao?
ਖੋਟੇ ਕਉ ਖਰਾ ਕਹੈ ਖਰੇ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
khotay ka-o kharaa kahai kharay saar na jaanai.
Such a spiritually blind person considers worldly wealth as genuine which has no value in God’s court. He does not realize the value of Naam, the real wealth.
Mtu ambaye ni kipofu wa kiroho kama huyo anafikiria utajiri wa kidunia kuwa halisi ambao hauna thamani katika mahakama ya Mungu. Yeye hagundui thamani ya Naam, utajiri halisi.
ਅੰਧੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਵਿਡਾਣੈ ॥੩॥
anDhay kaa naa-o paarkhoo kalee kaal vidaanai. ||3||
So astonishing is the present age of Kalyug, that spiritually blind person is called appraiser of righteousness.
Ya kustaajabisha mno ni enzi ya sasa ya Kalyug, kwamba mtu kipofu wa kiroho anaitwa mkadiria wa uadilifu.
ਸੂਤੇ ਕਉ ਜਾਗਤੁ ਕਹੈ ਜਾਗਤ ਕਉ ਸੂਤਾ ॥
sootay ka-o jaagat kahai jaagat ka-o sootaa.
The person who is involved in worldly pursuits is called awake and the one who is awake in the remembrance of God is called asleep.
Mtu anayejishughulisha na harakati za kidunia anaitwa aliyeamka na yule ambaye ameamka katika ukumbusho wa Mungu anaitwa aliyelala.
ਜੀਵਤ ਕਉ ਮੂਆ ਕਹੈ ਮੂਏ ਨਹੀ ਰੋਤਾ ॥੪॥
jeevat ka-o moo-aa kahai moo-ay nahee rotaa. ||4||
The worldly people consider the spiritually alive person as dead, but does not grieve over the one who is spiritually dead.
Watu wa dunia wanafikiria mtu aliye hai kiroho kuwa mfu, lakini haiombolezi kuhusu yule ambaye amekufa kiroho.
ਆਵਤ ਕਉ ਜਾਤਾ ਕਹੈ ਜਾਤੇ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥
aavat ka-o jaataa kahai jaatay ka-o aa-i-aa.
The person who comes to Guru’s path is considered as lost cause and the one who is involved in worldly wealth, his advent is deemed as fruitful.
Mtu anayekuja kwenye njia ya Guru anafikiria kuwa mpotovu na yule ambaye amejishughulisha katika utajiri wa kudunia, ujio wake unadhaniwa kuwa wenye mafanikio.
ਪਰ ਕੀ ਕਉ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਹੈ ਅਪੁਨੋ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
par kee ka-o apunee kahai apuno nahee bhaa-i-aa. ||5||
The human beings likes the worldly wealth which will pass on to others, but do not like God’s Name which could be truly their own.
Binadamu wanapenda utajiri wa kidunia ambao utarithishwa kwa wengine, lakini hawapendi Jina la Mungu ambao kwa kweli linaweza kuwa lao.
ਮੀਠੇ ਕਉ ਕਉੜਾ ਕਹੈ ਕੜੂਏ ਕਉ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
meethay ka-o ka-urhaa kahai karhoo-ay ka-o meethaa.
There are those who call Sweet (God’s Name) as bitter and the bitter vicious lust as sweet.
Kuna wale wanaosema Kitamu (Jina la Mungu) kama chungu na ukware mchungu mkali kuwa tamu.
ਰਾਤੇ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਐਸਾ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੬॥
raatay kee nindaa karahi aisaa kal meh deethaa. ||6||
In Kalyug, this is being seen that the one who is imbued with God’s love is slandered.
Katika Kalyug, inaonekana kwamba yule ambaye amejawa na upendo wa Mungu anachongewa.
ਚੇਰੀ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੀਸੈ ॥
chayree kee sayvaa karahi thaakur nahee deesai.
People serve the maid (worldly wealth) of God but not the God.
Watu wanatumikia kijakazi (utajiri wa kidunia) wa Mungu lakini sio Mungu.
ਪੋਖਰੁ ਨੀਰੁ ਵਿਰੋਲੀਐ ਮਾਖਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਰੀਸੈ ॥੭॥
pokhar neer virolee-ai maakhan nahee reesai. ||7||
Just as butter can’t be obtained by churning the pond water, similarly peace can’t be obtained from the worldly wealth.
Kama vile siagi haiwezi kupatwa kwa kukoroga maji ya kidimbwi, vivyo hivyo amani haiwezi kupatwa kutoka utajiri wa kidunia.
ਇਸੁ ਪਦ ਜੋ ਅਰਥਾਇ ਲੇਇ ਸੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥
is pad jo arthaa-ay lay-ay so guroo hamaaraa.
The one who achieves the spiritual status of self realization is worthy of my respect as Guru.
Yule anayetimiza hadhi ya kiroho ya kujitambua anastahili heshima yangu kama Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਸੋ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੮॥
naanak cheenai aap ka-o so apar apaaraa. ||8||
O’ Nanak, the person who realizes his own self, becomes the embodiment of the infinite God.
Ee Nanak, mtu anayegundua nafsi yake mwenyewe, anakuwa udhihirisho wa kimwili wa Mungu asiye na mwisho.
ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ॥
sabh aapay aap varatdaa aapay bharmaa-i-aa.
He Himself is All-pervading; He Himself strays the people from the right path.
Yeye Mwenyewe anaenea kote; Yeye Mwenyewe anapotosha watu kutoka njia sahihi.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੯॥੨॥੧੮॥
gur kirpaa tay boojhee-ai sabh barahm samaa-i-aa. ||9||2||18||
By Guru’s Grace, one comes to understand, that God pervades everywhere.
Kwa Neema ya Guru, mtu anakuja kuelewa, kwamba Mungu anaenea kote.

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One Creator God. Realized by the grace of the true Guru:
Mungu Muumba Mmoja. Anayegunduliwa kwa neema ya Guru wa kweli:
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
man kaa sootak doojaa bhaa-o.
The impurity of one’s mind is due to that person’s love for worldly things rather than God.
Unajisi akilini mwa mtu unatokana na upendo wa mtu wa vitu vya kidunia badala la Mungu.
ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥
bharmay bhoolay aava-o jaa-o. ||1||
Deluded in doubts, one keeps wandering in the cycles of birth and death.
Akidanganywa katika shaka, mtu anaendelea kuzurura katika mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
manmukh sootak kabeh na jaa-ay.
The impurity of the self-willed manmukhnever goes away,
Uchafu wa manmukh mwenye hiari binafsi, kamwe hauondoki,
ਜਿਚਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jichar sabad na bheejai har kai naa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
so long as the mind of that person is not imbued with God’s Name through the Guru’s word.
Ili mradi akili ya mtu huyo haijavama kwa Jina la Mungu kupitia neno la Guru.
ਸਭੋ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜੇਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
sabho sootak jaytaa moh aakaar.
The emotional attachment for the worldly things is the bases for all the impurity of the mind.
Kiambatisho cha kihisia kwa vitu vya kidunia ni msingi wa unajisi wote wa akili.
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੨॥
mar mar jammai vaaro vaar. ||2||
Such aperson who is attached to Maya keeps going in cycles of birth and death.
Mtu kama huyo ambaye amejiambatisha kwa Maya anaendelea kuingia kwenye mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.
ਸੂਤਕੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਪਉਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
sootak agan pa-unai paanee maahi.
Fire, air and water are also polluted, Because there are insects and bacteria in them. (ritual of purifying with fire, water and air etc.)
Moto, hewa na maji pia yamechafuliwa, Kwa sababu kuna wadudu na bakteria ndani mwao. (mila ya kujitakasa kwa moto, maji na hewa na kadhalika.)
ਸੂਤਕੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਜੇਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਖਾਹਿ ॥੩॥
sootak bhojan jaytaa kichh khaahi. ||3||
The food which is eaten is polluted.
Chakula kinacholiwa kimechafuliwa.
ਸੂਤਕਿ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
sootak karam na poojaa ho-ay.
No rituals can purify the person who is caught in the concepts of pollution.
Hakuna mila zinazoweza kutakasa mtu ambaye amenaswa katika dhana za uchafuzi.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥
naam ratay man nirmal ho-ay. ||4||
It is only by being imbued with God’s Name that the mind is purified.
Ni kwa kujawa tu na Jina la Mungu ambapo akili inatakaswa.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
satgur sayvi-ai sootak jaa-ay.
The impurity is eradicated only by following the teachings of the Guru.
Uchafu unaondolewa tu kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.
ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜਨਮੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੫॥
marai na janmai kaal na khaa-ay. ||5||
and then one does not go through cycles of birth and death.
Na kisha mtu hapitii mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.
ਸਾਸਤ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸੋਧਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
saasat simrit soDh daykhhu ko-ay.
Let one reflect on the holy books and find,
Hebu mtu atafakari kuhusu vitabu takatifu na apate,
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
vin naavai ko mukat na ho-ay. ||6||
-that without meditating on God’s Name with love and devotion, no one is ever liberated (from the impurity of mind or the vices).
Kwamba bila kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu kwa upendo na kujitolea, kamwe hakuna mtu anakombolewa (kutoka uchafu wa akili au maovu).
ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਤਮੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
jug chaaray naam utam sabad beeches r.
Throughout the four ages, reflecting on Naam was considered the best advice.
Kupitia enzi nne zote, kutafakari kuhusu Naam kulifikiriwa kuwa ushauri nzuri kabisa.
ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੭॥
kal meh gurmukh utras paar. ||7||
In Kalyug also only the Guru’s followers swim across the worldly ocean of vices by meditating on God’s Name with love and respect.
Katika Kalyug pia wafuasi wa Guru pekee wanaogelea wakivuka bahari ya kidunia ya dhambi kwa kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu kwa upendo na heshima.
ਸਾਚਾ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
saachaa marai na aavai jaa-ay.
Only God is eternal, free from the cycles of birth and death.
Ni Mungu pekee ambaye ni wa milele, na huru kutoka mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak gurmukh rahai samaa-ay. ||8||1||
O’ Nanak,the Guru’s follower remains merged in God’s Name and therefore no vices can pollute his mind.
Ee Nanak, mfuasi wa Guru anabaki ameunganishwa katika Jina la Mungu na hivyo basi hakuna maovu yanaweza kuchafua akili yake.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥
gurmukh sayvaa paraan aDhaaraa.
O’ Pundit, becoming a Guru’s follower, make the teachings of the Guru as the support of your life.
Ee Mtaalam, kwa kuwa mfuasi wa Guru, fanya mafundisho ya Guru yawe tegemezo ya maisha yako.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਾ ॥
har jee-o raakho hirdai ur Dhaaraa.
Keeps Him enshrined in your heart.
Mueke Yeye vizuri moyoni mwako.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਸਾਚ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੧॥
gurmukh sobhaa saach du-aaraa. ||1||
(This way), becoming a Guru’s follower you will obtain honor at God’s court.
(Kwa njia hii), kwa kuwa mfuasi wa Guru utapata heshima katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਪੜੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
pandit har parh tajahu vikaaraa.
O’ Pandit, read and reflect about God’s virtues, and shed off your sinful thoughts.
Ee Pandit, soma na utafakari kuhusu fadhla za Mungu, na uondoe fikira zako za dhambi.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਉਤਰਹੁ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh bha-ojal utarahu paaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By following the teaching of the Guru, you will cross over the terrifying world-ocean of vices.
Kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, utavuka bahari-dunia ya dhambi inayoogofya.
