ਜੇਹੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਤੇਹਾ ਤਿਨ ਰਾਹੁ ॥
jayhee surat tayhaa tin raahu.
As is their level of consciousness, so is their way of life.
Kama ilivyo kiwango chao cha fahamu, ndivyo ilivyo mtindo wao wa maisha.
ਲੇਖਾ ਇਕੋ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਹੁ ॥੧॥
laykhaa iko aavhu jaahu. ||1||
According to our deeds, we come and go in reincarnation.
Kulingana na vitendo vyetu, tunakuja na kwenda katika kuzaliwa upya.
ਕਾਹੇ ਜੀਅ ਕਰਹਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
kaahay jee-a karahi chaturaa-ee.
Why, O soul, why do you try to be so clever?
Kwa nini, Ee roho, kwa nini unajaribu kuwa mjanja sana?
ਲੇਵੈ ਦੇਵੈ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
layvai dayvai dhil na paa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
God does not hesitate in giving or taking away (our consciousness).
Mungu hawezi kusita katika kupeana au kuchukua (fahamu yetu).
ਤੇਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਤੋਹਿ ॥
tayray jee-a jee-aa kaa tohi.
All creatures are Yours and You are their Master.
Viumbe vyote ni vyako na Wewe ndiwe Bwana wao.
ਕਿਤ ਕਉ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਵਹਿ ਰੋਹਿ ॥
kit ka-o saahib aavahi rohi.
(How can we think) that God is angry with us?
(Tunawezaje kufikiria) ya kwamba Mungu ametukasirikia?
ਜੇ ਤੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਵਹਿ ਰੋਹਿ ॥
jay too saahib aavahi rohi.
(Even if) we think that the Master is not happy with me,
(Hata kama) tunadhani ya kwamba Bwana hajafurahishwa nami,
ਤੂ ਓਨਾ ਕਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਓਹਿ ॥੨॥
too onaa kaa tayray ohi. ||2||
they belong to You and You belong to them,
wao ni wako na Wewe ni wao,
ਅਸੀ ਬੋਲਵਿਗਾੜ ਵਿਗਾੜਹ ਬੋਲ ॥
asee bolvigaarh vigaarhah bol.
By our foul language we spoil everything with our foul words.
Kwa lugha yetu mbaya tunaharibu kila kitu kwa maneno yetu mabaya.
ਤੂ ਨਦਰੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤੋਲਹਿ ਤੋਲ ॥
too nadree andar toleh tol.
You still judge our actions with Your graceful glance.
Bado unahukumu vitendo vyetu kwa mtazamo wako wa neema.
ਜਹ ਕਰਣੀ ਤਹ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ॥
jah karnee tah pooree mat.
When one’s conduct is good, then one’s consciousness also becomes perfect.
Wakati tabia ya mtu ni mzuri, basi fahamu ya mtu pia inakuwa nzuri kabisa.
ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ॥੩॥
karnee baajhahu ghatay ghat. ||3||
Without good deeds, (level of consciousness) decreases.
Bila vitendo vizuri, (kiwango cha fahamu) kinapungua.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕੈਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
paranvat naanak gi-aanee kaisaa ho-ay.
Nanak beseeches, what kind of person is a wise man?
Nanak anaomba, mtu aina gani ni mwanaume mwenye busara?
ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
aap pachhaanai boojhai so-ay.
(Wise men) are those who have self-realization (feel part of God).
(Wanaume wenye busara) ni wale ambao wamejigundua wenyewe (wanahisi kuwa sehemu ya Mungu).
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
gur parsaad karay beechaar.
(This self-realization comes from) Grace of the Guru and contemplating Gurbani.
(Kujigundua huku kunatoka kwa) Neema ya Guru na kutafakari Gurbani.
ਸੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੩੦॥
so gi-aanee dargeh parvaan. ||4||30||
Such wise people are accepted in God’s court.
Watu wenye busara kama hao wanakubalika katika mahakama ya Mungu.

ਤੂ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਮੈ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਕੈਸੇ ਅੰਤੁ ਲਹਾ ॥
too daree-aa-o daanaa beenaa mai machhulee kaisay ant lahaa.
You are like a vast river, All-knowing and All-seeing. I am a small fish (in your vast river; therefore) how can I understand Your limits?
Wewe ni kama mto pana, unajua yote na unaona yote. Mimi ndimi samaki mdogo (katika mto wako pana; hivyo basi) nitawezaje kuelewa vikomo vyako?
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਤੂ ਹੈ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਸੀ ਫੂਟਿ ਮਰਾ ॥੧॥
jah jah daykhaa tah tah too hai tujh tay niksee foot maraa. ||1||
Wherever I look, I only see You water; when I (as a small fish) am taken out (of the water), I die crying in pain (because of separation from You).
Popote ninapoangalia, nakuona tu Wewe maji; wakati mimi (kama samaki mdogo) natolewa nje (ya maji), nakufa nikilia kwa uchungu (kwa sababu ya utengano kutoka Wewe).
ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਉ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਜਾਲੀ ॥
na jaanaa may-o na jaanaa jaalee.
I am not fearful of the fisherman or the net ( death or the cause of Death).
Sina woga wa mvuvi wala wavu (kifo au sabau ya kifo).
ਜਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਸਮਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa dukh laagai taa tujhai samaalee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But when the pain (of Death) comes, then I will call upon You.
Lakini wakati uchungu (wa kifo) unakuja, wakati huo nitatoa wito kwako.
ਤੂ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਮੈ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
too bharpoor jaani-aa mai door.
(O’my God),You are always omnipresent; But it is I who have deemed You to be far away.
(Ee Mungu wangu), daima upo kila mahali; lakini ni mimi ambaye nimekudhania kuwa mbali.
ਜੋ ਕਛੁ ਕਰੀ ਸੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
jo kachh karee so tayrai hadoor.
Whatever I do, I do in Your Presence.
Chochote ninachofanya, nafanya katika uwepo wako.
ਤੂ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਹਉ ਮੁਕਰਿ ਪਾਉ ॥
too daykheh ha-o mukar paa-o.
You see all my actions, and yet I ignore Your presence.
Unaona vitendo vyangu vyote, ila napuuza uwepo wako.
ਤੇਰੈ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
tayrai kamm na tayrai naa-ay. ||2||
I have not done deeds ordained by You, or remembered You with love.
Sijatenda vitendo vilivyotawazwa nawe, aman kukukumbuka kwa upendo.
ਜੇਤਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਹਉ ਖਾਉ ॥
jaytaa deh taytaa ha-o khaa-o.
Whatever You give me, that is what I eat.
Chochote unachonipea, hicho ndicho nikulacho.
ਬਿਆ ਦਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
bi-aa dar naahee kai dar jaa-o.
There is no other door-unto which door should I go?
Hakuna mlango mwingine – napaswa kuenda kwa mlango gani?
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
naanak ayk kahai ardaas.
Nanak offers this one prayer:
Nanak anawasilisha ombi hili moja:
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
jee-o pind sabh tayrai paas. ||3||
this body and soul are totally Yours.
Mwili huu na roho ni yako kabisa.
ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਆਪੇ ਮੰਝਿ ਮਿਆਨੋੁ ॥
aapay nayrhai door aapay hee aapay manjh mi-aano.
He Himself is near, and far away; He Himself is in-between. He is everywhere.
Yeye mwenyewe yu karibu, na mbali pia; Yeye mwenyewe yu katikati. Mungu yupo kila mahali.
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਹਾਨੋੁ ॥
aapay vaykhai sunay aapay hee kudrat karay jahaano.
He Himself beholds, and listens. By His Creative Power, He created the world.
Yeye mwenyewe anatazama, na kusikiza. Kwa nguzu zake za uumbaji, aliumba dunia.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਪਰਵਾਨੋੁ ॥੪॥੩੧॥
jo tis bhaavai naankaa hukam so-ee parvaano. ||4||31||
Whatever pleases Him, that command is acceptable, says Nank.
Chochote kinachompendezaq, amri hiyo inakubalika, asema Nanak.
ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੪ ॥

ਕੀਤਾ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
keetaa kahaa karay man maan.
Why should the created beings feel pride in their minds?
Kwa nini viumbe vilivyoumbwa vihisi majivuno akilini mwao?
ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੇ ਕੈ ਹਥਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
dayvanhaaray kai hath daan.
The Gift is in the Hands of the Great Giver.
Zawadi ipo mikononi mwa Mtoaji Mkuu.
ਭਾਵੈ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਸੋਇ ॥
bhaavai day-ay na day-ee so-ay.
It is his pleasure whether He gives or not.
Ni kwa raha yake iwapo atapeana au la.
ਕੀਤੇ ਕੈ ਕਹਿਐ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
keetay kai kahi-ai ki-aa ho-ay. ||1||
What can be done by the order of the created beings?
Nini kinaweza kufanyika kwa amri ya viumbe vilivyoumbwa?
ਆਪੇ ਸਚੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ॥
aapay sach bhaavai tis sach.
God Himself is Truth; and Truth pleases Him.
Mungu mwenyewe ni Ukweli; na Ukweli unamfurahisha.
ਅੰਧਾ ਕਚਾ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anDhaa kachaa kach nikach. ||1|| rahaa-o.
False and shallow is the blind ( ignorant) person.
Wa uwongo na duni mi mtu kipofu (mjinga).
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੁਖ ਬਿਰਖ ਆਰਾਉ ॥
jaa kay rukh birakh aaraa-o.
The One who owns the trees of the forest and the plants of the garden, embellishes them.
Yule anayemiliki miti kwenye msitu na mimea kwenye bustani, anavipamba.
ਜੇਹੀ ਧਾਤੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਤਿਨ ਨਾਉ ॥
jayhee Dhaat tayhaa tin naa-o.
according to their origin, He gives them all their names.
Kulingana na asili yao, anavipea majina yao yote.
ਫੁਲੁ ਭਾਉ ਫਲੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਇ ॥
ful bhaa-o fal likhi-aa paa-ay.
The Flower and the Fruit of God’s Love are obtained by pre-ordained destiny.
Ua na tunda la upendo wa Mungu yanapatwa kwa hatima iliyoagiziwa mapema.
ਆਪਿ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
aap beej aapay hee khaa-ay. ||2||
As we plant, so do we harvest and eat.
Tunavyopanda, ndivyo tunavyovuna na kula.
ਕਚੀ ਕੰਧ ਕਚਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਾਜੁ ॥
kachee kanDh kachaa vich raaj.
Our body is like a house with weak walls and our mind (the mason) is also untrained.
Mwili wetu ni kama nyumba yenye kuta dhaifu na akili yetu (mjenzi) pia haijafundishwa.
ਮਤਿ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਫਿਕਾ ਸਾਦੁ ॥
mat aloonee fikaa saad.
The flavor of the intellect is bland and insipid without the Salt.
Ladha ya akili ni kavu na isiyovutia bila chumvi.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਣੇ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
naanak aanay aavai raas.
O’ Nanak, as He wills, He makes things right.
Ee Nanak, anavyotaka, anafanya kila kitu kiwe shwari.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੩॥੩੨॥
vin naavai naahee saabaas. ||3||32||
Without meditating on God’s Name, no one is approved in His court.
Bila kutafakari kuhusu jina la Mungu, hakuna mtu anakubalika katika mahakama yake.

Sri Raag, na Guru wa kwanza, mpigo wa tano:
ਅਛਲ ਛਲਾਈ ਨਹ ਛਲੈ ਨਹ ਘਾਉ ਕਟਾਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਕੈ ॥
achhal chhalaa-ee nah chhalai nah ghaa-o kataaraa kar sakai.
Neither the unperceivable ( Maya) can be deceived, nor any dagger can neutralize its evil effect.
Isiyotambulika (Maya) haiwezi kudanganywa, wala hakuna hanjari inayoweza kutuliza athari yake muovu.
ਜਿਉ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਹੈ ਇਸੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਟਲ ਪਲੈ ॥੧॥
ji-o saahib raakhai ti-o rahai is lobhee kaa jee-o tal palai. ||1||
As our Master keeps us, so do we exist.The mind of a greedy person starts wavering.
Vile Bwana wetu anavyotuweka, ndivyo tunavyokua. Akili ya mtu mwenye tamaa inaanza kuyumba.
ਬਿਨੁ ਤੇਲ ਦੀਵਾ ਕਿਉ ਜਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin tayl deevaa ki-o jalai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
How can the lamp of divine wisdom be lighted without the oil of meditation on God’s Name?
Taa ya busara takatifu itawezaje kuwashwa bila mafuta ya kutafakari kuhusu jina la Mungu?
ਪੋਥੀ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥ ਭਉ ਵਟੀ ਇਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
pothee puraan kamaa-ee-ai. bha-o vatee it tan paa-ee-ai.
Let the reading of your prayer book be the oil, and let the Fear of God be the wick for the lamp of this body.
Wacha kusoma kwa kitabu chako cha maombi kuwe mafuta, na uache uwoga wa Mungu uwe utambi wa taa ya mwili huu.
ਸਚੁ ਬੂਝਣੁ ਆਣਿ ਜਲਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
sach boojhan aan jalaa-ee-ai. ||2||
Light this lamp with the understanding of Truth.
Washa taa hii kwa uelewa wa Ukweli.
ਇਹੁ ਤੇਲੁ ਦੀਵਾ ਇਉ ਜਲੈ ॥
ih tayl deevaa i-o jalai.
This is the way how this lamp (of divine wisdom) is lighted.
Hii ndio njia ambayo taa hii (ya busara takatifu) inawashwa.
ਕਰਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤਉ ਮਿਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kar chaanan saahib ta-o milai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
It is only when you enlighten your mind (with divine wisdom), only then God is realized.
Unapoangaza akili yako (kwa busara takatifu), wakati huo tu ndio Mungu anagunduliwa.
ਇਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਾਣੀਆ ॥
it tan laagai baanee-aa.
When the Guru’s word shows its effect on the body,
Wakati neno la Guru linaonyesha athari yake kwenye mwili,
ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਣੀਆ ॥
sukh hovai sayv kamaanee-aa.
then joy and peace is received by humbly meditating on His Name.
basi faraja na amani inapokelewa kwa kutafakari kwa unyenyekevu kuhusu jina lake.
