ਵਖਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

Person who reflects on the purpose of human birth, is the true devotee of God.
Mtu anayetafakari kuhusu kusudi la uzao wa kibinadamu, ndiye mtawa wa kweli wa Mungu.
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥
kudrat hai keemat nahee paa-ay.
One sees God pervading in the nature in the form of sun, moon, Seasons and species of different kind. But God’s creation is priceless.
Mtu anaona Mungu akienea kwenye mazingira katika muundo wa jua, mwezi, misimu na spishi za aina tofauti. Lakini uumbaji wa Mungu hauwezi kukadirika.
ਜਾ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਤ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jaa keemat paa-ay ta kahee na jaa-ay.
Even if its value were known, it could not be described.
Hata iwapo thamani yake ya kweli ingejulikana, haingeweza kuelezwa.
ਸਰੈ ਸਰੀਅਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਪਾਰੁ ॥
sarai saree-at karahi beechaar.bin boojhay kaisay paavahi paar.
How can a person, who only continues reflecting on Shara or Shariat (religious codes and rituals), find liberation from the vices without realizing the Creator?
Mtu, ambaye anaendelea kutafakari kuhusu Shara au Shariata (kanuni na mila za kidini), anawezaje kupata ukombozi kutoka maovu bila kugundua Muumba?
ਸਿਦਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਿਜਦਾ ਮਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਖਸੂਦੁ ॥
sidak kar sijdaa man kar makhsood.
Let sincere faith be your bowing in prayer, and let the conquest of your mind be your objective in life.
Acha imani nyoofu iwe kuinama kwako katika sala, na uache kudhibiti kwa akili yako kuwe lengo lako maishani.
ਜਿਹ ਧਿਰਿ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਿਹ ਧਿਰਿ ਮਉਜੂਦੁ ॥੧॥
jih Dhir daykhaa tih Dhir ma-ujood. ||1||
Only then you can say, ‘wherever I look, I see (God) present there.”
Wakati huo tu ndio unaweza kusema, “Popote niangaliapo, naona (Mungu yupo hapo.”

ਗੁਰ ਸਭਾ ਏਵ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
gur sabhaa ayv na paa-ee-ai naa nayrhai naa door.
The true benefit of Guru’s company is not obtained by bodily remaining near or far from Him.
Manufaa ya kweli ya uandamano wa Guru hayapatwi kwa kuwa karibu au mbali kimwili kutoka kwake.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਂ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੨॥
naanak satgur taaN milai jaa man rahai hadoor. ||2||
O’ Nanak, you shall meet the True Guru, if your mind remains in Guru’s Presence.(the benefit of meeting the Guru is obtained only by following his word)
Ee Nanak, utakutana na Guru wa Kweli, iwapo akili yako isalie katika Uwepo wa Guru. (manufaa ya kukutana na Guru yanapatwa tu kwa kufuata neno lake)

ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਸਪਤ ਸਾਗਰਾ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਚਾਰਿ ਵੇਦ ਦਸ ਅਸਟ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
sapat deep sapat saagraa nav khand chaar vayd das asat puraanaa.
The seven islands, seven seas, nine continents, four Vedas and eighteen Puranas,
Visiwa saba, bahari saba, mabara tisa, Vedas nne na Puranas kumi na nane,
ਹਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੂੰ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
har sabhnaa vich tooN varatdaa har sabhnaa bhaanaa.
O God, You are present in all and You are pleasing to all.
Ee Mungu, Wewe upo katika vyote na Wewe unapendeza kwa wote.
ਸਭਿ ਤੁਝੈ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਰਗ ਪਾਣਾ ॥
sabh tujhai Dhi-aavahi jee-a jant har saarag paanaa.
O’ the Master of the universe, all beings remember You with loving devotion.
Ee Bwana wa ulimwengu, viumbe vyote vinakukumbuka Wewe kwa ujitoaji wa upendo.
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਹਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਣਾ ॥
jo gurmukh har aaraaDhaday tin ha-o kurbaanaa.
I dedicate my life to those Guru’s followers who lovingly remember You.
Naweka wakfu maisha yangu kwa wafuasi hao wa Guru wanaokukumbuka Wewe kwa upendo.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣਾ ॥੪॥
Toon aapay aap varatdaa kar choj vidaanaa. ||4||
You Yourself are All-pervading by staging this wondrous drama of the world!
Wewe Mwenyewe unaenea kote kwa kupanga sarakasi hii ya ajabu ya dunia!

Shalok, na Guru wa Tatu:
ਕਲਉ ਮਸਾਜਨੀ ਕਿਆ ਸਦਾਈਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹੀ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
kala-o masaajnee ki-aa sadaa-ee-ai hirdai hee likh layho.
Why ask for a pen, and why ask for ink? Write within your heart,
Kwa nini uulizie kalamu, na kwa nini uulizie wino? Andika ndani mwa moyo wako,
ਸਦਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਨੇਹੁ ॥
sadaa saahib kai rang rahai kabahooN na tootas nayhu.
by doing so, you would always remain imbued with God’s love and this love would never end.
Kwa kufanya hivyo, daima utasalia umepenyezwa na upendo wa Mungu na upendo huu kamwe hautaisha.
ਕਲਉ ਮਸਾਜਨੀ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਭੀ ਨਾਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
kala-o masaajnee jaa-isee likhi-aa bhee naalay jaa-ay.
Pen and ink, along with what is written on the paper, would be destroyed.
Kalamu na wino, pamoja na kile ambacho kimeandikwa kwa karatasi, kitaangamizwa.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਸਚੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak sah pareet na jaa-isee jo Dhur chhodee sachai paa-ay. ||1||
But, O’ Nanak, that Love shall never be destroyed that God has put in one’s heart from the beginning.
Lakini, Ee Nanak, upendo huo kamwe hautaangamizwa ambao Mungu ameweka moyoni kutoka mwanzoni.

ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵਦਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਵਿਉਪਾਇ ॥
nadree aavdaa naal na chal-ee vaykhhu ko vi-upaa-ay.
If you may carefully reflect on it, you would conclude that whatever is visible, (worldly possessions and relatives ) would not accompany you after death.
Iwapo uweze kutafakari kwa makini kuihusu, utahitimisha kwamba chochote kinachoonekana (mali na jamaa za kidunia) hakitaambatana nawe baada ya kifo.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਸਚਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
satgur sach drirh-aa-i-aa sach rahhu liv laa-ay.
The true Guru has firmly taught us this truth; that we should always remain attuned to the eternal God.
Guru wa Kweli ametufunza ukweli huu kwa uthabiti; kwamba daima tubaki tumamakinikia Mungu wa milele.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak sabdee sach hai karmee palai paa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, it is only by divine grace that, God is realized through Guru’s word.
Ee Nanak, ni kwa neema takatifu pekee ambapo, Mungu anagunduliwa kwa neno la Guru.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਭੇਤੁ ॥
har andar baahar ik tooN tooN jaaneh bhayt.
O’ God, You alone dwell both inside and outside us, and know all the secrets.
Ee Mungu, Wewe peke yako unaishi ndani mwetu na nje pia, na unajua siri zote.
ਜੋ ਕੀਚੈ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤੁ ॥
jo keechai so har jaandaa mayray man har chayt.
O’ my mind, Whatever we do God knows, therefore, always remember Him with love and devotion.
Ee akili yangu, chochote tunachofanya Mungu anajua, hivyo basi, mkumbuke Yeye daima kwa upendo na ujitoaji.
ਸੋ ਡਰੈ ਜਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਦਾ ਧਰਮੀ ਵਿਗਸੇਤੁ ॥
so darai je paap kamaavdaa Dharmee vigsayt.
The one who commits sins lives in fear, while the one who lives righteously rejoices.
Yule anayetenda dhambi anaishi kwa woga, wakati yule anayeishi kwa uadilifu anashangilia.
ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਆਉ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਡਰੀਐ ਕੇਤੁ ॥
tooN sachaa aap ni-aa-o sach taa daree-ai kayt.
You Yourself are True, and True is Your Justice. Why should anyone be afraid?
Wewe Mwenyewe ni wa Kweli, na Haki yako ni ya Kweli. Kwa nini mtu yeyote awe na hofu?
ਜਿਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਲੇਤੁ ॥੫॥
jinaa naanak sach pachhaani-aa say sach ralayt. ||5||
O’ Nanak, they who have realized the True God, they have merged with Him.
Ee Nanak, wale ambao wamegundua Mungu wa Kweli, wameungana na Yeye.

ਕਲਮ ਜਲਉ ਸਣੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀਐ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਭੀ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
kalam jala-o san masvaanee-ai kaagad bhee jal jaa-o.
May that pen along with ink be burnt down and also burn that paper,
Heri kalamu hiyo pamoja na wino ichomwe na pia choma hiyo karatasi.
ਲਿਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
likhan vaalaa jal bala-o jin likhi-aa doojaa bhaa-o.
and the writer who has written about the love of Maya, instead of love for God.
Na mwandishi ambaye ameandika kuhusu upendo wa Maya, badala ya upendo kwa Mungu.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak poorab likhi-aa kamaavanaa avar na karnaa jaa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, one does what has been pre-ordained. Nothing else can be done.
Ee Nanak, mtu anafanya kile ambacho kimeagiziwa mapema. Hakuna kitu kingine kinaweza kufanywa.

ਹੋਰੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਪੜਣਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
hor koorh parh-naa koorh bolnaa maa-i-aa naal pi-aar.
(Except love for God), all other study and talk are false, useless, and nothing but love for Maya.
(Isipokuwa upendo kwa Mungu), masomo na matamshi yote mengine ni ya uongo, na ni upendo kwa Maya tu.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
naanak vin naavai ko thir nahee parh parh ho-ay khu-aar. ||2||
O Nanak, except God’s Name nothing else is everlasting, those who study more and more about any thing but Naam, come to grief in the end.
Ee Nanak, isipokuwa Jina la Mungu hakuna kitu kinadumu milele, wale wanaosoma zaidi na zaidi kuhusu kitu chochote ila Naam, wanahuzunika mwishowe.

Great is the glory of God, great is the singing of His praise.
Mkuu ni utukufu wa Mungu, kuu ni kuimba kwa sifa yake.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਹੈ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ॥
har kee vadi-aa-ee vadee hai jaa ni-aa-o hai Dharam kaa.
Yes, great is the glory of God, because his justice is based on righteousness.
Ndio, mkuu ni utukufu wa Mungu, kwa sababu haki yake inatoka kwa uadilifu.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਫਲੁ ਹੈ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ॥
har kee vadi-aa-ee vadee hai jaa fal hai jee-a kaa.
Praising the glory of God, is the best deed, as this is the reward and objective of the life of a person.
Kusifu utukufu wa Mungu, ni kitendo kizuri kabisa, kwani hii ndio tuzo na lengo la maisha ya mtu.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਜਾ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਕਹਿਆ ਚੁਗਲ ਕਾ ॥
har kee vadi-aa-ee vadee hai jaa na sun-ee kahi-aa chugal kaa.
Great is the glory of the God, because He does not listen to the words of the slanderer.
Mkuu ni utukufu wa Mungu, kwa sababu Yeye hasikilizi maneno ya mchongezi.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡੀ ਹੈ ਅਪੁਛਿਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਵਕਾ ॥੬॥
har kee vadi-aa-ee vadee hai apuchhi-aa daan dayvkaa. ||6||
Great is the Glory of the God because He showers His gifts without being asked.
Mkuu ni Utukufu wa Mungu kwa sababu Yeye anamimina thawabu zake bila kuuliziwa.

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੀ ਸਭ ਮੁਈ ਸੰਪਉ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
ha-o ha-o kartee sabh mu-ee sampa-o kisai na naal.
The entire world has been consumed by indulging in the ego of their worldly possessions, but this worldly wealth does not accompany anyone after death.
Dunia nzima imevama kwa kujihusisha katika ubinafsi wa mali yao ya kidunia, lakini utajiri huu wa kidunia hauambatani na mtu baada ya kifo.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਜੋਹੀ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay dukh paa-i-aa sabh johee jamkaal.
Because of their love for duality, they all suffer and remain in fear of death.
Kwa sababu ya upendo wao wa uwili, wote wanateseka na kusalia katika hofu ya kifo.
