ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥
lakh laskar lakh vaajay nayjay lakh uth karahi salaam.
You may have thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and lances and thousands of men may rise to salute you.
Unaweza kuwa na maelfu ya majeshi, maelfu ya bendi zinazotembea na mafumo na maelfu ya wanaume wanaweza kuinuka kukupigia saluti.
ਲਖਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਖ ਉਠਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
lakhaa upar furmaa-is tayree lakh uth raakhahi maan.
Your dominion may extend over millions of human beings and millions of persons may rise to honor you.
Utawala wako unaweza kuenea kwa mamilioni ya binadamu na mamilioni ya watu wanaweza kuinuka kukuheshimu.
ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਰਾਫਲ ਕਾਮ ॥੧॥
jaaN pat laykhai naa pavai taaN sabh niraafal kaam. ||1||
But, if this honor is of no account in God’s court then all of your ostentatious show is useless. ||1||
Lakini iwapo heshima hii haina manufaa katika mahakama ya Mungu basi onyesho lako lote la kifahari ni bure.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥
har kay naam binaa jag DhanDhaa.
Without meditation on God’s Name, all worldly attachments lead to entanglement.
Bila kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu, viambatisho vyote vya kidunia vinaongoza kwa kunaswa.
ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੋਲਾ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਅੰਧੋ ਅੰਧਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jay bahutaa samjaa-ee-ai bholaa bhee so anDho anDhaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Even though the ignorant person may be taught again and again, still he remainsblind to these warnings and remains entangled in worldly affairs.||1||Pause||
Hata iwapo mtu mjinga anaweza kufunzwa tena na tena, bado anabaki kipofu kwa onyo hizi na anabaki amenaswa katika shughuli za kidunia. ||1||Sitisha||
ਲਖ ਖਟੀਅਹਿ ਲਖ ਸੰਜੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਜਹਿ ਲਖ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
lakh khatee-ah lakh sanjee-ah khaajeh lakh aavahi lakh jaahi.
One may earn thousands, collect thousands and spend thousands of dollars; thousands may come and thousands may go.
Mtu anaweza kuchuma maelfu, kukusanya maelfu na kutumia maelfu ya dola; maelfu wanaweza kuja na maelfu wanaweza kuenda.
ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਅ ਕਿਥੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
jaaN pat laykhai naa pavai taaN jee-a kithai fir paahi. ||2||
But, if this does not bring honor in God’s court then one dosn’t know where such souls will find rest. ||2||
Lakini, iwapo hii haileti heshima katika mahakama ya Mungu basi mtu hajui ambapo roho kama hizo zinapata mapumziko.
ਲਖ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਮਝਾਵਣੀ ਲਖ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥
lakh saasat samjhaavanee lakh pandit parheh puraan.
The pandits may read and explain holy books like Shastras and puranas thousands of times and earn respect of the audience,
Walimu wa busara wanasoma na kueleza vitabu takatifu kama Shastras na Puranas maelfu ya nyakati na kupata heshima kutoka kwa hadhira,
ਜਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੇ ਕੁਪਰਵਾਣ ॥੩॥
jaaN pat laykhai naa pavai taaN sabhay kuparvaan. ||3||
but, all these efforts are useless if his honor is not approved in God’s court. ||3||
lakini, jitihada hizi zote ni bure iwapo heshima yake haiidhinishwi katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਸਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
sach naam pat oopjai karam naam kartaar.
True honor is attained only by meditating on God’s Name and Creator’s Name is realized by His grace only.
Heshima ya kweli inapatwa tu kwa kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu na Jina la Muumba linagunduliwa kwa neema yake pekee.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥
ahinis hirdai jay vasai naanak nadree paar. ||4||1||31
O’ Nanak, if day and night one realizes the presence of God’s Name in the heart, then by His grace one swims across the worldly ocean of vices. ||4||1||31||
Ee Nanak, iwapo mchana na usiku mtu agundue uwepo wa Jina la Mungu moyoni, basi kwa neema yake mtu anaogelea akivuka bahari ya kidunia ya dhambi.

ਦੀਵਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਲੁ ॥
deevaa mayraa ayk naam dukh vich paa-i-aa tayl.
God’s Name alone is the lamp which provides the spiritual light in my life and I have put the oil of worldly suffering in this lamp.
Jina la Mungu pekee ni taa inayotoa mwanga wa kiroho maishani mwangu nami nimeweka mafuta ya mateso ya kidunia ndani mwa taa hii.
ਉਨਿ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਓਹੁ ਸੋਖਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੧॥
un chaanan oh sokhi-aa chookaa jam si-o mayl. ||1||
The light of God’s Name has dried up the oil of suffering and I have escapedmeeting with the demon of death (fear of death). ||1||
Mwanga wa Jina la Mungu umekausha mafuta ya mateso nami nimeepuka kukutana na pepo wa kifo (hofu ya kifo).
ਲੋਕਾ ਮਤ ਕੋ ਫਕੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
lokaa mat ko fakarh paa-ay.
O’ people, do not make fun of my idea.
Ee watu, msifanye mzaha kuhusu wazo langu.
ਲਖ ਮੜਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਏਕਠੇ ਏਕ ਰਤੀ ਲੇ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
lakh marhi-aa kar aykthay ayk ratee lay bhaahi. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Just as a spark can burn thousands of wooden logs piled together, (similarly a tiny flame of Naam can burn down the sins of many births). ||1||Pause||
Kama vile cheche inaweza kuchoma maelfu ya magogo yaliyowekwa pamoja, (vivyo hivyo mwali mdogo wa Naam unaweza kuchoma dhambi za kuzaliwa upya kwingi). ||1||Sitisha||
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਤਲਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੇਸਉ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
pind patal mayree kaysa-o kiri-aa sach naam kartaar.
For me the meditation on God’s eternal Name are the ceremonies performed for the dead.
Kwangu kutafakari kuhusu Jina la milele la Mungu ni sherehe zinazoandaliwa wafu.
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਏਹੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
aithai othai aagai paachhai ayhu mayraa aaDhaar. ||2||
Here and hereafter, God is my support everywhere. ||2||
Humu na ahera, Mungu ni tegemezo yangu kila mahali.
ਗੰਗ ਬਨਾਰਸਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਉ ॥
gang banaaras sifat tumaaree naavai aatam raa-o.
O’ God, for me pilgrimage to Ganges and Banaras is in singing Your praise where my soul takes its holy bath.
Ee Mungu, kwangu hija ya Ganges na Banaras ni kuimba sifa yako ambapo roho yangu inachukua mwosho wake mtakatifu.
ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਭਾਉ ॥੩॥
sachaa naavan taaN thee-ai jaaN ahinis laagai bhaa-o. ||3||
True ablution of the soul takes place only when one always remains imbued with God’s love. ||3||
Udhu wa kweli wa roho unatendeka tu wakati mtu daima anabaki amejawa na upendo wa Mungu.
ਇਕ ਲੋਕੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਛਮਿਛਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਵਟਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
ik lokee hor chhamichharee baraahman vat pind khaa-ay.
The Brahmin offers rice balls to the angels and the dead ancestors, but it is he who eats them in the end.
Brahmin anawasilisha wali-mviringo kwa malaika na wahenga waliokufa, lakini ni yeye anayezikula mwishowe.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਕਾ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨਿਖੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੨॥
naanak pind bakhsees kaa kabahooN nikhootas naahi. ||4||2||32||
O’ Nanak, the rice balls (gift) of His grace never run out. ||4||2||32||
Ee Nanak, wali-mviringo (thawabu) ya neema yake kamwe haiishi.

ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਤੀਰਥ ਕੀਏ ॥
dayviti-aa darsan kai taa-ee dookh bhookh tirath kee-ay.
O’ God, yearning for Your blessed vision, even the angels suffered through pain and hunger at the sacred shrines.
Ee Mungu, wakitamani mwono wako uliobarikiwa, hata malaika waliteseka uchungu na njaa kwenye ziara takatifu.
ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਤੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ਭਏ ॥੧॥
jogee jatee jugat meh rahtay kar kar bhagvay bhaykh bha-ay. ||1||
The yogis and the celibates living disciplined lifestyle wore saffron robes. ||1||
Mayogi na waseja wakiishi kwa nidhamu wakivaa majoho ya zafarani.
ਤਉ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ॥
ta-o kaaran saahibaa rang ratay.
O’ my Master, to meet you many remain imbued with Your love.
Ee Bwana wangu, kukutana nawe wengi wanabaki wamejawa na upendo wako.
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕਾ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੰਤਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕੇਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tere naam aneka roop ananta kahan na jaahe tere gun kaytay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God, many are Your names, infinite Your forms and it cannot be said how many are Your virtues. ||1||Pause||
Ee Mungu, mengi ni majina yako, haina mwisho miundo yako na haiwezi kusemwa fadhila zako ni idadi ipi. ||1||Sitisha||
ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਲਾਇਤਿ ਦੇਸ ਗਏ ॥
dar ghar mehlaa hastee ghorhay chhod vilaa-it days ga-ay.
To behold Your blessed vision, many left behind their worldly comforts like castles, elephants, horses and their home-land and wandered in wilderness.
Ili kutazama mwono wako uliobarikiwa, wengi waliacha starehe zao za kidunia kama makasri, tembo, farasi na nchi yao ya asili na kuzurura nyikani.
ਪੀਰ ਪੇਕਾਂਬਰ ਸਾਲਿਕ ਸਾਦਿਕ ਛੋਡੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ॥੨॥
peer paykaaNbar saalik saadik chhodee dunee-aa thaa-ay pa-ay. ||2||
The spiritual leaders, prophets, seers and men of faith renounced the world to become acceptable in Your court. ||2||
Viongozi wa kiroho, manabii, waonaji na wanaume wa imani walikana dunia ili kuweza kukubalikja katika mahakama yako.
ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਤਜੀਅਲੇ ਕਾਪੜ ਛੋਡੇ ਚਮੜ ਲੀਏ ॥
saad sahj sukh ras kas tajee-alay kaaparh chhoday chamarh lee-ay.
Many people renounced tasty delicacies, comfort, happiness and pleasures; some abandoned their clothes and wore animal skins.
Watu wengi walikana vitoweo vitamu, starehe, furaha na raha; wengine waliacha mavazi yao na kuvaa ngozi za wanyama.
ਦੁਖੀਏ ਦਰਦਵੰਦ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਭਏ ॥੩॥
dukhee-ay daradvand dar tayrai naam ratay darvays bha-ay. ||3||
Many pain-afflicted people came to Your door and became sages imbued with the love of Your Name. |3|
Watu wengi waliokumbwa na maumivu walikuja mlangoni pako na wakawa wajuzi waliojawa na upendo wa Jina lako.
ਖਲੜੀ ਖਪਰੀ ਲਕੜੀ ਚਮੜੀ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਕੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ॥
khalrhee khapree lakrhee chamrhee sikhaa soot Dhotee keenHee.
To seek You, some carry leather pouches, while others took to the scalp as begging bowl, Yogi’s staff, deer skins, hair tufts, sacred threads and loincloths.
Ili kukutafuta, wengine wanabeba mifuko ya ngozi, wakati wengine walichukua ngozi ya kichwa kama bakuli ya kuomba, fimbo ya Yogi, ngozi za kulungu, mafundo ya nywele, nyuzi takatifu na mashuka.
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹਉ ਸਾਂਗੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਣਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੈਸੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੩॥
tooN saahib ha-o saaNgee tayraa paranvai naanak jaat kaisee. ||4||1||33||
Nanak prays, O’ God, You are my Master and I am Your disciple; I have no prideof belonging to any specific caste or creed. ||4||1||33||
Nanak anaomba, Ee Mungu, Wewe ndiwe Bwana wangu nami ni mwanafunzi wako; sina fahari wa kuwa wa tabaka au dini yoyote maalum.
