ਏਕਸੁ ਚਰਣੀ ਜੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਲਬਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਕੀ ਧਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥੩॥
aykas charnee jay chit laaveh lab lobh kee Dhaavsitaa. ||3||
If you focus your consciousness on the love of God, then why would you chase after greed?
Ukimakinisha ufahamu wako kwa upendo wa Mungu, basi kwa nini ufuatilie tamaa?
ਜਪਸਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਰਚਸਿ ਮਨਾ ॥
japas niranjan rachas manaa.
Meditate on the Immaculate God with love and full concentration of your mind.
Tafakari kuhusu Mungu safi kwa upendo na makini kamili ya akili yako.
ਕਾਹੇ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਪਟੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaahay boleh jogee kapat ghanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O Yogi, why do you utter so much falsehood?
Ee Yogi, kwa nini unatamka udanganyifu mwingi mno?
ਕਾਇਆ ਕਮਲੀ ਹੰਸੁ ਇਆਣਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਣੀਤਾ ॥
kaa-i-aa kamlee hans i-aanaa mayree mayree karat bihaaneetaa.
your body is wild (senses are chasing vices), and the mind is childish (doesn’t know the righteous way of life). Your life is passing away in the pursuit of Maya.
Mwili wako ni mwitu (hisi zinakimbiza dhambi), na akili ni ya utoto (haijui mtindo wa haki wa maisha). Maisha yako yanapotea katika harakati za Maya.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਗੀ ਦਾਝੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀਤਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੫॥
paranvat naanak naagee daajhai fir paachhai pachhutaaneetaa. ||4||3||15||
But Nanak prays, when the soul departs from this world empty handed, it repents seeing the naked body being burnt
Lakini Nanak anaomba, wakati roro inaondoka kutoka dunia hii mikono mitupu, inatubu ikiona mwili uchi ukichomwa.

a-ukhaDh mantar mool man aykai jay kar darirh chit keejai ray.
O brother, If you firmly enshrine Naam in your mind, then you will come to know that the basic and best mantra and remedy for all the maladies is God’s Name.
Ee ndugu, ukithamini Naam kwa uthabiti akilini mwako, basi utakuja kujua mantra na dawa ya kimsingi na nzuri ya maradhi yote ni Jina la Mungu.
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮ ਕੇ ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
janam janam kay paap karam kay katanhaaraa leejai ray. ||1||
O brother, remember God, the Destroyer of the effect of evil deeds committed by you birth after birth.
Ee ndugu, mkumbuke Mungu, Mwangamizi wa athari ya vitendo vibaya vilivyotendwa nawe katika kuzaliwa kwingi upya.
ਮਨ ਏਕੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
man ayko saahib bhaa-ee ray.
O my brother, God is the only savior of the mind from the vices.
Ee ndugu yangu, Mungu ndiye mkombozi wa pekee wa akili kutoka dhambi.
ਤੇਰੇ ਤੀਨਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖਣਾ ਜਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tayray teen gunaa sansaar samawah alakh na lakh-naa jaa-ee ray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But because of your mind’s three impulses (virtue, vice, and power), you remain engrossed in worldly affairs, and you cannot comprehend the unknowable God.
Lakini kwa sababu ya misukumo mitatu ya akili yako (fadhila, dhambi na mamlaka), unabaki umevama katika shughuli za kidunia, wala huwezi kufahamu Mungu asiyefahamika.
ਸਕਰ ਖੰਡੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਨਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਹਮ ਤਉ ਪੰਡ ਉਚਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
sakar khand maa-i-aa tan meethee ham ta-o pand uchaa-ee ray.
Maya is so sweet to the body, like sugar or molasses. We all carry loads of it.
Maya ni tamu sana mwilini, kama sukari ama molasi. Tunabeba nyingi mno.
ਰਾਤਿ ਅਨੇਰੀ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਲਜੁ ਟੂਕਸਿ ਮੂਸਾ ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੨॥
raat anayree soojhas naahee laj tookas moosaa bhaa-ee ray. ||2||
O brother, In the darkness of ignorance we are unaware how our span of life is being cut short, as if the mouse of death is nibbling at the rope of oy life,
Ee ndugu, katika giza ya ujinga hatufahamu jinsi muda wetu wa maisha unafupishwa, kana kwamba panya wa kifo anatafuna kamba ya uhai wetu.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
manmukh karahi taytaa dukh laagai gurmukh milai vadaa-ee ray.
Whatever self-conceited persons do, they are afflicted with an equal proportion of pain. Only the Guru’s followers obtain honor both here and hereafter.
Chochote ambacho watu wenye majivuno binafsi wanafanya, wanateswa kwa kiwango sawia ya uchungu. Ni wafuasi wa Guru pekee wanaopata heshima humu na baadaye.
ਜੋ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਹੋਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੩॥
jo tin kee-aa so-ee ho-aa kirat na mayti-aa jaa-ee ray. ||3||
O brother, whatever He does, that alone happens; pre-ordained destiny based on the past actions cannot be erased.
Ee ndugu, chochote anachofanya Yeye, hicho pekee kinafanyika; hatima iliyoagiziwa mapema inayotokana na vitendo vya awali haiwezi kufutwa.
ਸੁਭਰ ਭਰੇ ਨ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਊਣੇ ਜੋ ਰਾਤੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਈ ਰੇ ॥
subhar bharay na hoveh oonay jo raatay rang laa-ee ray.
Those who are imbued with the love of God always remain brimful with joy, and never run short of this love.
Wale ambao wamejawa na upendo wa Mungu daima wanabaki wamejawa na furaha, na kamwe hawapungukiwi na upendo huu.
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਪੰਕ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੇ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੬॥
tin kee pank hovai jay nanak ta-o moorhaa kichh paa-ee ray. ||4||4||16||
Nanak says, if our mind becomes even little bit humble,then our foolish mind would obtain some spiritual gain.
Nanak asema, iwapo akili yetu iwe na unyenyekevu hata kidogo, basi akili yetu pumbavu itapata faida ya kiroho.

kat kee maa-ee baap kat kayraa kidoo thaavhu ham aa-ay.
Who was our mother, and who was our father? Where did we come from?
Nani alikuwa mama yetu, na nani alikuwa baba yetu? Tulitoka wapi?
ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿੰਬ ਜਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਨਿਪਜੇ ਕਾਹੇ ਕੰਮਿ ਉਪਾਏ ॥੧॥
agan bimb jal bheetar nipjay kaahay kamm upaa-ay. ||1||
We were created from the water of father’s semen, and fashioned in the fire of mother’s womb. But we don’t know for what purpose we were created at all.
Tuliumbwa kutoka maji ya shahawa ya baba, na kuundwa kwa moto wa tumbo la mama. Lakini hatujui kwa kusudi gani tuliumbwa hata kidogo.
ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
mayray saahibaa ka-un jaanai gun tayray.
O’ my Master, who can know Your Glorious Virtues?
Ee Bwana wangu, nani anaweza kujua Fadhila zako Tukufu?
ਕਹੇ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ਅਉਗਣ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kahay na jaanee a-ugan mayray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My own vices cannot be counted.
Maovu yangu mwenyewe hayawezi kuhesabika.
ਕੇਤੇ ਰੁਖ ਬਿਰਖ ਹਮ ਚੀਨੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਪਸੂ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
kaytay rukh birakh ham cheenay kaytay pasoo upaa-ay.
How many forms of trees, plants, and beasts we passed through before being born into this human body?
Tulipitia miundo ngapi ya miti, mimea na wanyama kabla kuzaliwa katika mwili huu wa kibinadamu?
ਕੇਤੇ ਨਾਗ ਕੁਲੀ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ਕੇਤੇ ਪੰਖ ਉਡਾਏ ॥੨॥
kaytay naag kulee meh aa-ay kaytay pankh udaa-ay. ||2||
Many times we entered the families of snakes and flying birds.
Mara mingi tuliingia katika familia ya nyoka na ndege wanaopepea.
ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਭੰਨੈ ਕਰਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
hat patan bij mandar bhannai kar choree ghar aavai.
A human being commits evil deeds like breaking into shops and well-guarded palaces, and comes home after committing thefts.
Binadamu anatenda vitendo vibaya kama kupora maduka na majumba yaliyolindwa vyema, na anarudi nyumbani baada ya kufanya wizi.
ਅਗਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਿਛਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਹਾ ਛਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
agahu daykhai pichhahu daykhai tujh tay kahaa chhapaavai. ||3||
While committing these thefts, one looks back and forth (to ensure that nobody is watching), but how can one hide these thefts from You (God)?
Wakati anatenda wizi hiyo, mtu anatazama pande zote (kuhakikisha hakuna anayemtazama), lakini mtu atawezaje kuficha wizi hii kutoka kwako (Mungu)?
ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਮ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਦੇਖੇ ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰਾ ॥
tat tirath ham nav khand daykhay hat patan baajaaraa.
To erase our sins, we start visiting holy shores and the banks of rivers in all over the world, and go begging in the shops, bazaars and cities.
Kufuta dhambi zetu, tunaanza kuzuru ufuo takatifu na ukingo wa mito duniani kote, na kuenda kuomba katika maduka, masoko na majiji.
ਲੈ ਕੈ ਤਕੜੀ ਤੋਲਣਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
lai kai takrhee tolan laagaa ghat hee meh vanjaaraa. ||4||
When a fortunate peddler being, with Your grace, evaluate carefully, then he understands that You are dwelling within our heart.
Wakati mchuuzi mwenye bahati, kwa neema yako, anachunguzwa kwa makini, basi anaelewa ya kwamba Wewe unaishi ndani mwa moyo wetu.
ਜੇਤਾ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨੀਰਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਤੇਤੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
jaytaa samund saagar neer bhari-aa taytay a-ugan hamaaray.
our sins are countless like the unmeasurable water in the ocean.
Dhambi zetu haziwezi kuhesabika lakini maji yasiyoweza kupimwa baharini.
ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮਿਹਰ ਉਪਾਵਹੁ ਡੁਬਦੇ ਪਥਰ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
da-i-aa karahu kichh mihar upaavhu dubday pathar taaray. ||5||
O’ God, Please show Mercy and save us. You can help even the stone-hearted people to swim across the world-ocean of vices
Ee Mungu, tafadhali tuonee huruma na utuokoe. Unaweza kusaidia hata watu wenye mioyo migumu kuogelea wakivuka bahari-dunia ya dhambi
ਜੀਅੜਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਰਾਬਰਿ ਤਪੈ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਵਗੈ ਕਾਤੀ ॥
jee-arhaa agan baraabar tapai bheetar vagai kaatee.
O My Master, my soul is burning like fire and the knife of worldly desires is cutting my inner self
Ee Bwana wangu, roho yangu inachomeka kama moto na kisu cha hamu za kidunia inakata nafsi yangu ya ndani.
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥੬॥੫॥੧੭॥
paranvat naanak hukam pachhaanai sukh hovai din raatee. ||6||5||17||
Nanak submits, that if one recognizes God’s command, peace prevails in one’s life day and night.
Nanak anawasilisha, ya kwamba iwapo mtu anatambua amri ya Mungu, amani inadumu maishani mwake mchana na usiku.

rain gavaa-ee so-ay kai divas gavaa-i-aa khaa-ay.
You are wasting the nights in sleeping, and the days in eating (enjoying worldly pleasures).
Unapoteza usiku ukilala, na mchana ukikula (ukifurahia raha za kidunia).
ਹੀਰੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
heeray jaisaa janam hai ka-udee badlay jaa-ay. ||1||
Your precious human life is being lost in exchange for a few pennies
Maisha yako ya kibinadamu yenye thamana yanapotea kwa ubadilishaji na peni kidogo.
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਕਾ ॥
naam na jaani-aa raam kaa.
you have not realized God’s Name.
wewe hujagundua Jina la Mungu.
ਮੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
moorhay fir paachhai pachhutaahi ray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You fool – you shall regret and repent in the end!
Wewe mpumbavu – utajuta na kutubu mwishowe!
ਅਨਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਧਰਣੀ ਧਰੇ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਚਾਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
antaa Dhan Dharnee Dharay anat na chaahi-aa jaa-ay.
The one who hoards the unlimited worldly wealth does not have the urge to realize the infinite God.
Mtu anayetwaa utajiri wa kidunia usio na kikomo hana hamu ya kugundua Mungu asiye na mwisho.
ਅਨਤ ਕਉ ਚਾਹਨ ਜੋ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਆਏ ਅਨਤ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੨॥
anat ka-o chaahan jo ga-ay say aa-ay anat gavaa-ay. ||2||
Those who have spent their time trying to acquire unlimited worldly wealth have ended up losing the infinite wealth of God’s Name.
Wale ambao wametumia muda wao wakijaribu kupata utajiri wa kidunia usio na mipaka mwishowe wamepoteza utajiri usio na mwisho wa Jina la Mungu.
ਆਪਣ ਲੀਆ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਾਗਠੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
aapan lee-aa jay milai taa sabh ko bhaagath ho-ay.
If by one’s own efforts, the true wealth of God’s Name could be obtained, then everyone would become spiritually wealthy.
Iwapo kwa jitihada ya mtu binafsi, utajiri wa kweli wa Jina la Mungu ungeweza kupatwa, basi kila mtu angekuwa mkwasi kiroho.
