ho-ay da-i-aal kirpaal parabh thaakur aapay sunai baynantee.
When God becomes merciful and compassionate on a person, He Himself listens to his prayer,
Wakati Mungu anakuwa mwenye huruma na mkarimu kwa mtu, Yeye Mwenyewe anasikiliza ombi lake,
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਚਿੰਤੀ ॥
pooraa satgur mayl milaavai sabh chookai man kee chintee.
then by uniting him with the true Guru, this way all his anxiety is dispelled.
Kisha kwa kumuunganisha na Guru wa kweli, kwa njia hii mahangaiko yake yote yanaondolewa.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਵਖਦੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖਿ ਵਸੰਤੀ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੬੨॥
har har naam avkhad mukh paa-i-aa jan naanak sukh vasantee. ||4||12||62||
O’ Nanak, in whose mouth the Guru administers the medicine of God’s Name, leads his life in spiritual peace. ||4||12||62||

The pleasure of Maya is short-lived like the shadow of a tree.
Raha ya Maya haidumu kama kivuli vha mti.
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਗਏ ਕਹੁ ਕਾ ਕੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
paraan ga-ay kaho kaa kee maa-i-aa. ||2||
When one breathes one’s last, then tell me to whom does this wealth belong?||2||
Wakati mtu anapumua pumzi yake ya mwisho, basi niambia utajiri huu ni wa nani?
ਜਸ ਜੰਤੀ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
jas jantee meh jee-o samaanaa.
As no one can tell where the sound contained in a musical instrument goes when one stops playing the instrument,
Kama vile hakuna mtu anaweza kusema ambako sauti ya ala ya muziki inaenda wakati mtu anaacha kucheza ala hiyo,
ਮੂਏ ਮਰਮੁ ਕੋ ਕਾ ਕਰ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
moo-ay maram ko kaa kar jaanaa. ||3||
similarly, how can anyone know the secret that where the soul of a dead person has gone? ||3||
vivyo hivyo, yeyote anawezaje kujua siri ya mahali ambapo roho ya mfu imeenda?
ਹੰਸਾ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
hansaa sarvar kaal sareer.
Just as swans keep hovering over a pool, similarly death keeps hovering over our bodies.
Kama vile bata-maji wanendelea kuzunguka juu ya kidimbwi, vivyo hivyo kifo kinazunguka juu ya miili yetu.
ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਨ ਪੀਉ ਰੇ ਕਬੀਰ ॥੪॥੮॥
raam rasaa-in pee-o ray kabeer. ||4||8||
O’ Kabir, partake the supreme elixir of God’s Name. ||4||8||

All this universe is the creation of God. In this creation the human mind
Ulimwengu huu wote ni uumbaji wa Mungu. Katika uumbaji huu akili ya binadamu
ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੇ ਕੰਚੂਆ ਫਲ ਮੋਤੀ ॥੧॥
tit laagay kanchoo-aa fal motee. ||1||
bears two kinds of fruits; which are like glass (evil deeds) and like pearls (good deeds). ||1||
inazalisha aina mbili ya matunda; ambayo ni kama gilasi (vitendo viovu) na kama lulu (vitendo vizuri).
ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਘਰੁ ਜੋ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
kavan so ghar jo nirbha-o kahee-ai.
Where is the place which is said to be free of fear?
ni wapi ambapo panasemekana kuwa huru kutoka hofu?
ਭਉ ਭਜਿ ਜਾਇ ਅਭੈ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bha-o bhaj jaa-ay abhai ho-ay rahee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
where the fear flees away and one can live without fear. ||1||Pause||
Ambapo hofu inatokomezwa na mtu anaweza kuishi bila hofu. ||1||Sitisha||
ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
tat tirath nahee man patee-aa-ay.
The mind is not appeased on the banks of sacred rivers,
Akili haitulizwi katika ukingo wa mito takatifu,
ਚਾਰ ਅਚਾਰ ਰਹੇ ਉਰਝਾਇ ॥੨॥
chaar achaar rahay urjhaa-ay. ||2||
even there, people remain entangled in the thoughts of good and bad deeds. |2|
hata hapo, watu wanabaki wamenaswa katika fikira za vitendo vizuri na vibaya.
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਦੁਇ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨ ॥
paap punn du-ay ayk samaan.
Sin and virtue are actually alike, both do not provide stability of mind.
Dhambi na fadhila yote ni sawa, zote hazileti uthabiti wa akili.
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਗੁਨ ਆਨ ॥੩॥
nij ghar paaras tajahu gun aan. ||3||
O’ my mind, God dwells within you, meditate on Him and forget about acquiringall other meritorious deeds leading to rituals. ||3||
Ee akili yangu, Mungu anishi ndani mwako, tafakari kumhusu na usahau kuhusu kupata vitendo vyote vinavyostahili sifa vinavyoelekeza kwa mila.
ਕਬੀਰ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਰੋਸੁ ॥

O’ Kabir, do not forget the Name of immaculate God,
Ee Kabir, usisahau Jina la Mungu safi,
ਇਸੁ ਪਰਚਾਇ ਪਰਚਿ ਰਹੁ ਏਸੁ ॥੪॥੯॥
is parchaa-ay parach rahu ays. ||4||9||
keep this mind of yours involved in meditation on Naam. ||4||9||
weka akili hii yako imehusishwa katika utafakari wa Naam.

Those who claim that they have realized the infinite and incomprehensible God,
Wale wanaodai kwamba wamegundua Mungu asiye na mwisho na asiyeeleweka,
ਬਾਤਨ ਹੀ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
baatan hee baikunth samaanaa. ||1||
by mere words, they plan to reach paradise. ||1||
kwa maneno tu, wanapanga kufikia paradiso.
ਨਾ ਜਾਨਾ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਕਹਾ ਹੀ ॥
naa jaanaa baikunth kahaa hee.
I do not know where this paradise is,
Mimi sijui ambapo paradiso hii ipo,
ਜਾਨੁ ਜਾਨੁ ਸਭਿ ਕਹਹਿ ਤਹਾ ਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaan jaan sabh kaheh tahaa hee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
everybody plans to go there. ||1||Pause||
kila mtu anapanga kuenda huko. ||Sitisha||
ਕਹਨ ਕਹਾਵਨ ਨਹ ਪਤੀਅਈ ਹੈ ॥
kahan kahaavan nah patee-a-ee hai.
By mere talk, the mind is not appeased.
Kwa matamshi tu, akili haitulizwi.
ਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਈ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ta-o man maanai jaa tay ha-umai ja-ee hai. ||2||
The mind is appeased only when egotism is conquered. ||2||
Akili inatulizwa tu wakati ubinafsi unashindwa.
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਮਨਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਕੀ ਆਸ ॥
jab lag man baikunth kee aas.
As long as the mind is filled with the hope of going to heaven,
Ili mradi akili imejawa na tumaini la kuenda mbinguni,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਹੀ ਚਰਨ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੩॥
tab lag ho-ay nahee charan nivaas. ||3||
it cannot attune to God’s Name. ||3||
haiwezi kumakinikia Jina la Mungu.
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਾਹਿ ॥
kaho kabeer ih kahee-ai kaahi.
Kabeer says, how could I tell
Kabeer anasema, ningewezaje kusema
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠੈ ਆਹਿ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
saaDh sangat baikunthay aahi. ||4||10||
that the holy congregation is the true heaven?||4||10||
Kwamba ushirika takatifu ni mbinguni mwa kweli?

upjai nipjai nipaj samaa-ee.
A human being is born, grows and having grown up dies.
Binadamu anazaliwa, anakua na akishakua mzima anakufa.
ਨੈਨਹ ਦੇਖਤ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥
nainah daykhat ih jag jaa-ee. ||1||
Before our very eyes, this world is passing away. ||1||
Mbele ya macho yetu yenyewe, dunia hii inapita.
ਲਾਜ ਨ ਮਰਹੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
laaj na marahu kahhu ghar mayraa.
O’ mortals, why you don’t feel ashamed, claiming that this world is mine”?
Ee binadamu, kwa nini huhisi aibu, ukidai kwamba dunia hii ni yangu?
ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ant kee baar nahee kachh tayraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
At the very last moment, nothing is yours. ||1||Pause||
Wakati wa mwisho kabisa, hakuna kitu ni chako. ||1||Sitisha||
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਪਾਲੀ ॥
anik jatan kar kaa-i-aa paalee.
We cherish our body with so many efforts,
Tunathamini mwili wetu kwa jitihada nyingi sana,
ਮਰਤੀ ਬਾਰ ਅਗਨਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਲੀ ॥੨॥
martee baar agan sang jaalee. ||2||
but it is burnt on fire after death. ||2||
Lakini inachomwa kwa moto baada ya kifo.
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਮਰਦਨ ਅੰਗਾ ॥
cho-aa chandan mardan angaa.
The body which we massage with scents and perfumes,
Mwili huu ambao tunakanda kwa manukato na marashi,
ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਜਲੈ ਕਾਠ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਾ ॥੩॥
so tan jalai kaath kai sangaa. ||3||
the same body is burned with the firewood at the end. ||3||
mwili huo huo unachomwa kwa kuni mwishowe.
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਗੁਨੀਆ ॥
kaho kabeer sunhu ray gunee-aa.
Kabir says, Listen O’ virtuous people,
Kabie anasema, Sikilizeni Ee watu wema,
ਬਿਨਸੈਗੋ ਰੂਪੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀਆ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
binsaigo roop daykhai sabh dunee-aa. ||4||11||
your beautiful body shall perish and the entire world will witness. ||4||11||
Mwili wako mzuri utaangamia na dunia nzima itashuhudia.

What is the use of grieving over the death of others?
Kuna manufaa gani kwa kuomboleza juu ya kifo cha wengine?
ਤਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਜਉ ਆਪਨ ਜੀਜੈ ॥੧॥
ta-o keejai ja-o aapan jeejai. ||1||
we should grieve only if we were going to live forever. ||1||
tunafaa kuomboleza tu iwapo tungekuwa tunaishi milele.
ਮੈ ਨ ਮਰਉ ਮਰਿਬੋ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
mai na mara-o maribo sansaaraa.
I would not die like the rest of the world dies; I will not die spiritually,
Mimi sitakufa jinsi ambavyo dunia iliyosalia inakufa; mimi sitakufa kiroho,
ਅਬ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਹੈ ਜੀਆਵਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ab mohi mili-o hai jee-aavanhaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
because now I have met the spiritual life-giving God. ||1||Pause||
kwa sababu sasa nimekutana na Mungu anatoa uhai wa kiroho. ||1||Sitisha||
ਇਆ ਦੇਹੀ ਪਰਮਲ ਮਹਕੰਦਾ ॥
i-aa dayhee parmal mahkandaa.
One anoints his body with perfumes,
Mtu anapaka mwili wake manukato,
ਤਾ ਸੁਖ ਬਿਸਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥੨॥
taa sukh bisray parmaanandaa. ||2||
and in these pleasures he forgets the bestower of the supreme bliss. ||2||
na katika raha hizi anasahau mtawaza wa raha tele kuu.
ਕੂਅਟਾ ਏਕੁ ਪੰਚ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
koo-ataa ayk panch panihaaree.
Assume, this body is a well of worldly distractions and the sensory organs of touch, taste, sound, sight, and speech are the five water maids.
Dhani kwamba, mwili huu ni kisima cha vigeuza-fikira vya kidunia na viungo vya hisi ya kugusa, kuonja, kusikia, kuona, na kuzungumza ni yaya watano wa maji.
ਟੂਟੀ ਲਾਜੁ ਭਰੈ ਮਤਿ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
tootee laaj bharai mat haaree. ||3||
Engrossed in vices, one’s frail intellect is trying to attain happiness from evil pursuits, as if one is trying to draw water from the well with a broken rope. ||3||
Akivama katika maovu, akili hafifu ya mtu inajaribu kuapata furaha kutoka harakati za uovu, kana kwamba mtu anajaribu kuchota maji kutoka kisimani kwa kamba iliyovunjika.
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
kaho kabeer ik buDh beechaaree.
Kabeer says, when I reflected on this situation the right intellect took over,
Kabeer anasema, wakati nilitafakari kuhusu hali hii akili inayofaa ilianza kutawala,
ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਕੂਅਟਾ ਨਾ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੧੨॥
naa oh koo-ataa naa panihaaree. ||4||12||
then neither the well (worldly distractions) nor the water-maids (misguided sensory organs) remained. ||4||12||
kisha sio kisima (vigeuza-fikira vya kidunia) wala yaya wa maji (viungo vya hisi vilivyopotoka) walibaki.

ਅਸਥਾਵਰ ਜੰਗਮ ਕੀਟ ਪਤੰਗਾ ॥
asthaavar jangam keet patangaa.
The immobile forms, creatures, insects and moths,
Miundo isiyoweza kusonga, viumbe, wadudu na nondo,
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਕੀਏ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗਾ ॥੧॥
anik janam kee-ay baho rangaa. ||1||
we have passed through those many forms in numerous lifetimes. ||1||
Tumepitia miundo haya mingi katika kuzaliwa upya kwingi.
