ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਨਹ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
kirat pa-i-aa nah maytai ko-ay.
No one can erase destiny based on the past actions.
Hakuna mtu anaweza kufuta hatima kutokana na vitendo vyao vya awali.
ਕਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਆਗੈ ਹੋਇ ॥
ki-aa jaanaa ki-aa aagai ho-ay.
No one knowswhat will happen in the future.
Hakuna mtu anajua kile ambacho kitatendeka wakati ujao.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸੋਈ ਹੂਆ ॥
jo tis bhaanaa so-ee hoo-aa.
Whatever has happened has happened according to His will.
Chochote ambacho kimetendeka kimetendeka kulingana na mapenzi ya Mungu.
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣੈ ਵਾਲਾ ਦੂਆ ॥੧॥
avar na karnai vaalaa doo-aa. ||1||
There is no other Doer except God.
Hakuna Mtendaji mwengine ila Mungu.
ਨਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਰਮ ਕੇਵਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
naa jaanaa karam kayvad tayree daat.
Neither I know about my (past) deeds, nor do I know how great are Your gifts.
Wala sijui kuhusu vitendo vyangu (vya awali), wala sijui ukuu wa zawadi zako.
ਕਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਜਾਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karam Dharam tayray naam kee jaat. ||1|| rahaa-o.
All the merits of righteous deeds and social status, lie in Your Name alone.
Sifa za vitendo adilifu na hadhi ya kijamii, zipo katika Jina lako pekee.
ਤੂ ਏਵਡੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
too ayvad daataa dayvanhaar.
O’ God, You are such a great benefactor.
Ee Mungu, Wewe ni mfadhili mkuu wa kipekee.
ਤੋਟਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥
tot naahee tuDh bhagat bhandaar.
The treasures of Your devotional worship never run short.
Hazina za ibada ya kujitolea kwako kamwe hazipungui.
ਕੀਆ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
kee-aa garab na aavai raas.
Any act done in arrogance is never beneficial.
Kitendo chochote kinachofanywa katika kiburi kamwe hakina manufaa.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
jee-o pind sabh tayrai paas. ||2||
The safety of human soul and body is in Your hands.
Usalama wa roho na mwili wa binadamu upo mikononi mwako.
ਤੂ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲਹਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
too maar jeevaaleh bakhas milaa-ay.
O’ God, (through the Guru’s teaching), you eradicate my conceit and rejuvenate me spiritually and by Your mercy You unite me with Yourself.
Ee Mungu, (kupitia mafundisho ya Guru), unaondoa majivuno yangu na kunisisimua kiroho na kwa huruma yako unaniunganisha nawe.
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੀ ਤਿਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇ ॥
ji-o bhaavee ti-o naam japaa-ay.
As it pleases You, Please inspire me to lovingly meditate on Your Name.
Inavyokupendeza, Tafadhali nihamasishe kutafakari kwa upendo kuhusu Jina lako.
ਤੂੰ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੇਰੈ ॥
tooN daanaa beenaa saachaa sir mayrai.
O’ God, You arevery wise and my true protector.
Ee Mungu, Wewe ni mwenye hekima mno na mlinzi wangu wa kweli.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ਭਰੋਸੈ ਤੇਰੈ ॥੩॥
gurmat day-ay bharosai tayrai. ||3||
Please, bless me with the Guru’s teaching, I am dependent on You.
Tafadhali, nibariki na mafundisho ya Guru, mimi ni mtegemezi wako.
ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
tan meh mail naahee man raataa.
Those whose mind is imbued with God’s love, has no dirt of vices in their mind.
Wale ambao akili zao zimejawa na upendo wa Mungu, hawana uchafu wa dhambi akilini mwao.
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
gur bachnee sach sabad pachhaataa.
Through the Guru’s Word, they have realized the eternal God.
Kupitia Neno la Guru, wamegundua Mungu wa milele.
ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
tayraa taan naam kee vadi-aa-ee.
Your Name is their only support, they always sing the glory of Your Name.
Jina lako ni nguzo yao ya pekee, daima wanaimba utukufu wa Jina lako.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਹਣਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
naanak rahnaa bhagat sarnaa-ee. ||4||10||
O’ Nanak , dwelling in God’s refuge they are always imbued in His devotional worship.
Ee Nanak, wakiishi katika kimbilio cha Mungu wamejawa daima na ibada ya kujitolea kwake.

Raag Gauree, Guru wa Kwanza:
ਜਿਨਿ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਹਾਇਆ ਅਪਿਓ ਪੀਆਇਆ ॥
jin akath kahaa-i-aa api-o pee-aa-i-aa.
One who has worshipped the indescribable God, and has inspired others to do the same. He has partaken the nectar of Naam and has helped others to partake it.
Yule ambaye ameabudu Mungu asiyeweza kuelezwa, amehamasisha wengine kufanya vivyo hivyo. Ameshiriki nekta ya Naam na amesaidia wengine kuishirikia pia.
ਅਨ ਭੈ ਵਿਸਰੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
an bhai visray naam samaa-i-aa. ||1||
He forgets all other worldly fears because he always remains absorbed in Naam.
Anasahau woga wote wengine wa kidunia kwa sababu anabaki amevama daima katika Naam.
ਕਿਆ ਡਰੀਐ ਡਰੁ ਡਰਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ki-aa daree-ai dar dareh samaanaa. pooray gur kai sabad pachhaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The one who has realized God through the Guru’s Word, is not afraid of any worldly fears. The revered fear of God has eradicated his other fears.
Yule ambaye amegundua Mungu kupitia Neno la Guru, haogopi hofu nyingine ya kidunia. Uoga kwa heshima ya Mungu umeangamiza woga wake wengine.
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਰ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਸਿ ॥ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੨॥
jis nar raam ridai har raas. sahj subhaa-ay milay saabaas. ||2||
The one who has the wealth of God’s Name, intuitively remains imbued in His love and receives honor in His court.
Yule ambaye ana utajiri wa Jina la Mungu, kwa utaratibu anabaki amejawa na upendo wake na anaenziwa katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਜਾਹਿ ਸਵਾਰੈ ਸਾਝ ਬਿਆਲ ॥
jaahi savaarai saajh bi-aal.
Whom God keeps asleep (absorbed in the love of Maya) day and night,
Yule ambaye Mungu anaacha katika usingizi (amevama katika upendo wa Maya) mchana na usiku,
ਇਤ ਉਤ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬਾਧੇ ਕਾਲ ॥੩॥
it ut manmukh baaDhay kaal. ||3||
those self-willed remain in the fear of Death, here and hereafter.
Hao wenye hiari binafsi wanabaki katika uoga wa Kifo, humu na katika dunia itakayofuata.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
ahinis raam ridai say pooray.
Those in whose heart dwells God day and night are perfect.
Wale ambao moyoni mwao Mungu anaishi mchana na usiku ni kamili.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਮਿਲੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਦੂਰੇ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
naanak raam milay bharam dooray. ||4||11||
O Nanak, they cast off their doubts and unite with God.
Ee Nanak, wanaondoa shaka yao na kuungana na Mungu.

ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੁ ॥
janam marai tarai gun hitkaar.
One who loves the three modes of Maya (vice, virtue and power) is subjected to births and deaths.
Yule anayependa mbinu tatu za Maya (dhambi, fadhila na mamlaka) anatiishwa kwa kuzaliwa na kufa kwingi.
ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਕਥਹਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥
chaaray bayd katheh aakaar.
The four Vedas speak and discuss only of the visible form of the world.
Vedas nne zinazungumza na kujadili tu muundo unaoonekana wa dunia.
ਤੀਨਿ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਨੁ ॥
teen avasthaa kaheh vakhi-aan.
They describe and explain the three states of mind,
Zinaeleza na kufafanua hali tatu za akili,
ਤੁਰੀਆਵਸਥਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
turee-aavasthaa satgur tay har jaan. ||1||
but the fourth state, union with God, is known only through the True Guru.
Lakini hali ya nne, muungano na Mungu, inajulikana tu kupitia Guru wa Kweli.
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
raam bhagat gur sayvaa tarnaa.
It is through devotional worship of God by following the Guru’s teachings, one swims across the world-ocean of vices.
Ni kupitia ibada ya kujitolea kwa Mungu kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, ambapo mtu anaogelea akivuka bahari-dunia ya dhambi.
ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਮਰਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
baahurh janam na ho-ay hai marnaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
After which there is no more birth or death for him.
Ambapo baada yake hakuna kuzaliwa au kufa zaidi kwake.
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
chaar padaarath kahai sabh ko-ee.
Everyone speaks of the four great blessings; (righteousness, financial success, procreation and liberation from Maya).
Kila mtu anazungumzia baraka nne kuu; (haki, mafanikio ya kifedha, uzazi na ukombozi kutoka Maya).
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
simrit saasat pandit mukh so-ee.
The Smritis, the Shastras and the Pundits speak of them as well.
Smiritis, Shastras na Wataalam wa Kihindu wanaizungumzia pia.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅਰਥੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bin gur arath beechaar na paa-i-aa.
But without the teachings of Guru, nobody has experienced its true significance.
Lakini bila mafundisho ya Guru, hakuna mtu amehisi umuhimu wake wa kweli.
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
mukat padaarath bhagat har paa-i-aa. ||2||
Liberation from (Maya) is obtained through devotional worship of God.
Ukombozi (kutoka Maya) unapatwa kupitia ibada ya kujitolea kwa Mungu.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
jaa kai hirdai vasi-aa har so-ee.
The one, within whose heart God comes to dwells,
Yule ambaye, ndani mwa roho yake Mungu anakuja kuishi,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
gurmukh bhagat paraapat ho-ee.
through the Guru, he receives the blessings of devotional worship.
Kupitia Guru, anapokea baraka za ibada ya kujitolea.
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ॥
har kee bhagat mukat aanand.
Through devotional worship of God, the bliss of salvation is enjoyed.
Kupitia ibada ya kujitolea kwa Mungu, raha tele ya wokovu inafurahiwa.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ॥੩॥
gurmat paa-ay parmaanand. ||3||
This supreme bliss is obtained by following the Guru’s teaching.
Raha tele hii kuu inapatwa kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.
ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
jin paa-i-aa gur daykh dikhaa-i-aa.
One who follow the Guru’s teachings, realizes Him, and inspires others to realize Him too.
Yule anayefuata mafundisho ya Guru, anamgundua Yeye, na kuhamasisha wengine kumgundua pia.
ਆਸਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥
aasaa maahi niraas bujhaa-i-aa.
The Guru teaches him to live above desires, while still living amidst worldly desires.
Guru anamfunza kuishi bila tamaa, wakati bado anaishi kati ya tamaa za kidunia.
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥
deenaa naath sarab sukh-daata.
The one whom the Guru has revealed the Master of the meek and the Giver of peace to all.
Kwa yule ambaye Guru amedhihirisha Bwana wa wapole na Mpaji wa amani kwa wote.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੧੨॥
naanak har charnee man raataa. ||4||12||
O’ Nanak, the mind of that person remains imbued with the love of God.
Ee Nanak, akili ya mtu huyo inabaki imejawa na upendo wa Mungu.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾਇਆ ਰਹੈ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੋ ॥
amrit kaa-i-aa rahai sukhaalee baajee ih sansaaro.
O’ my body, thinking yourself as immortal, you live in comfort, but this world is just a passing drama.
Ee mwili wangu, ukijifikiria kuwa hauwezi kufa, unaishi kwa starehe, lakini dunia hii ni drama inayopita tu.
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੁਚੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਉਠਾਵਹਿ ਭਾਰੋ ॥
lab lobh much koorh kamaaveh bahut uthaaveh bhaaro.
You practice greed, and great falsehood, and you carry such a heavy burden of evils.
Unatenda kwa tamaa, na udanganyidu mkuu, na unabeba mzigo mzito zaidi wa maovu.
ਤੂੰ ਕਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਰੁਲਦੀ ਦੇਖੀ ਜਿਉ ਧਰ ਉਪਰਿ ਛਾਰੋ ॥੧॥
tooN kaa-i-aa mai ruldee daykhee ji-o Dhar upar chhaaro. ||1||
O my body, I have seen bodies like you wasted as dust on the earth.
Ee mwili wangu, nimeona miili kama wewe ikiharibika kama mchanga kwenye ardhi.
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਿਖ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
sun sun sikh hamaaree.
O’ my soul, carefully listen to my advice!
Ee roho yangu, sikiliza kwa makini ushauri wangu!
ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਰਹਸੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sukarit keetaa rahsee mayray jee-arhay bahurh na aavai vaaree. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ my soul, you will not find this opportunity (of human birth) again. Only your good deeds will last and be of help to you in the end.
Ee roho yangu, hautapata fursa hii (ya kuzaliwa kwa ubinadamu) tena. Vitendo vyako vizuri pekee vitadumu na vikusaidie mwishowe.
