ਸੋਭਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
sobhaa surat suhaavanee jin har saytee chit laa-i-aa. ||2||
The intellect of the person who has attuned his mind to God becomes beautiful and he earns good reputation in the world.
Akili za mtu ambaye amemakinisha akili yake kwa Mungu inakuwa mzuri na anapata sifa nzuri duniani.

ਅਖੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਵੇਖਣਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਕੰਨਾ ਸੁਨਣਾ ॥
akhee baajhahu vaykh-naa vin kanna sunnaa.
To see without eyes (restrain from looking at the beauty of other women with malicious intention; to hear without ears (restrain from listening to slander)
Kuona bila macho (kujizuia kutoka kutazama urembo wa wanawake wengine kwa nia mbaya); kusikia bila masikio (kujizuia kutoka kusikiza kashfa)
ਪੈਰਾ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਚਲਣਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਹਥਾ ਕਰਣਾ ॥
pairaa baajhahu chalnaa vin hathaa karnaa.
To walk without feet (to restrain from going after sinful pleasure); to work without hands (desist from doing any harm to others);
Kutembea bila miguu (kujizuia kutoka kufuatilia raha za dhambi); kutenda bila mikono (kujizuia kutoka kuwadhuru wengine);
ਜੀਭੈ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਇਉ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
jeebhai baajhahu bolnaa i-o jeevat marnaa.
To speak without a tongue (to resist from slandering others)-like this, one remains (egoistically) dead while yet alive.
Kuzungumza bila ulimi (kukujizuia kutoka kuzungumza kashfa kuhusu wengine)-kwa njia hii mtu anabaki amekufa (kutoka ubinafsi) akiwa bado hai.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ਕੈ ਤਉ ਖਸਮੈ ਮਿਲਣਾ ॥੧॥
naanak hukam pachhaan kai ta-o khasmai milnaa. ||1||
O’ Nanak, we realize God by understanding and following His command.

ਦਿਸੈ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
disai sunee-ai jaanee-ai saa-o na paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
God is visible, heard and recognized through his creation, but still the pleasure of his presence can not be realized.
Mungu anaonekana, kusikika na kutambuliwa kupitia uumbaji wake, lakini bado raha ya uwepo wake haiwezi kugunduliwa.
ਰੁਹਲਾ ਟੁੰਡਾ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਕਿਉ ਗਲਿ ਲਗੈ ਧਾਇ ॥
ruhlaa tundaa anDhulaa ki-o gal lagai Dhaa-ay.
How can a spiritually lame, armless and blind soul run to embrace Him?
Roho kiwete, asiye na mikono na kipofu atawezaje kukimbia na kumkumbatia Yeye?
ਭੈ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਕਰ ਭਾਵ ਕੇ ਲੋਇਣ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
bhai kay charan kar bhaav kay lo-in surat karay-i.
Let the Fear of God be your feet, and let His Love be your hands; let His Understanding be your eyes.
Acha Uoga wa Mungu uwe miguu yako, na uache Upendo wake uwe mikono yako; acha Uelewa wake uwe macho yako.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਿਆਣੀਏ ਇਵ ਕੰਤ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
naanak kahai si-aanee-ay iv kant milaavaa ho-ay. ||2||
Says Nanak, in this way, O’ the wise soul-bride, you shall be united with your Master-God.
Asema Nanak, kwa njia hii, Eee roho kama bi harusi mwenye busara, utaungana na Bwana-Mungu wako.

sadaa sadaa tooN ayk hai tuDh doojaa khayl rachaa-i-aa.
Forever and ever, You are the only One; You set the play of duality in motion.
Daima na milele, Wewe ndiwe yule Mmoja wa pekee; Wewe unaendeleza mchezo wa uwili.
ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਲੋਭੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੰਤਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
ha-umai garab upaa-ay kai lobh antar jantaa paa-i-aa.
You created egotism and arrogant pride, and You placed greed within Your beings.
Wewe uliumba ubinafsi na fahari yenye kiburi, na uliweka tamaa ndani mwa viumbe vyako.
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਖੁ ਤੂ ਸਭ ਕਰੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥
ji-o bhaavai ti-o rakh too sabh karay tayraa karaa-i-aa.
Keep them as it pleases Your Will; everyone acts as You cause them to act.
Waweke inavyopendeza Mapenzi yako; kila mtu anatenda unavyowafanya watende.
ਇਕਨਾ ਬਖਸਹਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਤੁਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
iknaa bakhsahi mayl laihi gurmatee tuDhai laa-i-aa.
On some, You bestow Your grace and attune them to the Guru’s teachings and then unite them with Yourself.
Kwa wengine, unatawaza neema yako na kuwamakinisha kwa mafundisho ya Guru na kisha unawaunganisha nawe mwenyewe.
ਇਕਿ ਖੜੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
ik kharhay karahi tayree chaakree vin naavai hor na bhaa-i-aa.
Some are always attentively meditating on You, except Your Name, nothing else pleases them.
Wengine wanatafakari daima kukuhusu kwa makini, isipokuwa Jina lako, hakuna kingine kinachowapendeza.
ਹੋਰੁ ਕਾਰ ਵੇਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਇਕਿ ਸਚੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
hor kaar vaykaar hai ik sachee kaarai laa-i-aa.
Any other task would be worthless to them-You have enjoined them to Your True Service (meditation on Your Name).
Kazi nyingine yoyote ingekuwa bure kwao-Wewe umewashirikisha kwa Huduma Yako Halisi (kutafakari kuhusu Jina lako).
ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਹੈ ਇਕਿ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਰਹੇ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
put kalat kutamb hai ik alipat rahay jo tuDh bhaa-i-aa.
In the midst of children, spouse and relations, some still remain detached from them; they are pleasing to You.
Kati ya watoto, wenzi wa ndoa na jamaa, wengine bado wanabaki wamejitenga kutoka kwao; hao wanapendeza kwako.
ਓਹਿ ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
ohi andrahu baahrahu nirmalay sachai naa-ay samaa-i-aa. ||3||
Inwardly and outwardly, they are pure, and they are absorbed in the True Name.
Ndani mwao na kinje, hao ni safi, na wamevama katika Jina la Kweli.

su-inay kai parbat gufaa karee kai paanee pa-i-aal.
I may make a cave, in a mountain of gold, or in the water of the nether regions;
Naweza kuunda pango, katika mlima wa dhahabu, ama katika maji ya maeneo ya chini;
ਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਕੈ ਆਕਾਸੀ ਉਰਧਿ ਰਹਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ॥
kai vich Dhartee kai aakaasee uraDh rahaa sir bhaar.
I may remain standing on my head, upside-down, on the earth or up in the sky;
Naweza baki nimesimama kwa kichwa changu, kichwa chini miguu juu, duniani ama juu angani;
ਪੁਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਕਪੜੁ ਪਹਿਰਾ ਧੋਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਰਿ ॥
pur kar kaa-i-aa kaparh pahiraa Dhovaa sadaa kaar.
I may totally cover my body with clothes, and wash my body continually;
Naweza kufunika mwili wangu kabisa kwa mavazi, na kuosha mwili wangu mara kwa mara;
ਬਗਾ ਰਤਾ ਪੀਅਲਾ ਕਾਲਾ ਬੇਦਾ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
bagaa rataa pee-alaa kaalaa baydaa karee pukaar.
I may loudly recite the four vedas, wearing white, red, yellow or black attires.
Naweza kukariri kwa sauti ya juu Vedas nne, nivae mavazi nyeupe, nyekundu ama nyeusi.
ਹੋਇ ਕੁਚੀਲੁ ਰਹਾ ਮਲੁ ਧਾਰੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
ho-ay kucheel rahaa mal Dhaaree durmat mat vikaar.
I may even live in dirt and filth. And yet, this is just a product of evil mindedness, all these are bad deeds of evil intellect.
Hata naweza kuishi katika uchafu na takataka. Na ila, hili ni zao la fikira mbaya, vyote hivi ni vitendo vibaya vya akili muovu.
ਨਾ ਹਉ ਨਾ ਮੈ ਨਾ ਹਉ ਹੋਵਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
naa ha-o naa mai naa ha-o hovaa naanak sabad veechaar. ||1||
O’ Nanak, I ponder over only the Name of God, without which neither I was nor I am and nor I shall be worth anything. (means, my ego should be completely erased)
Ee Nanak, nawaza tu kuhusu Jina la Mungu, ambalo bila hilo sikuwahi kuwa, wala sina, wala sitawahi kuwa na thamani yoyote. (Inamaanisha ubinafsi wangu unafaa kufutwa kabisa)

ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਖਾਲਿ ਪਖਾਲੇ ਕਾਇਆ ਆਪੇ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
vastar pakhaal pakhaalay kaa-i-aa aapay sanjam hovai.
The one who, daily washes his clothes and bathe his body, and considers himself as ascetic.
Yule ambaye, kila siku anaosha mavazi yake na kuosha mwili wake, na kujifikiria kuwa mtawa.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਲਗੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
antar mail lagee nahee jaanai baahrahu mal mal Dhovai.
He is not aware of the filth of evil thoughts staining his mind, while he repeatedly tries to wash off the outer dirt.
Hana ufahamu wa uchafu wa fikira mbaya unaochafua akili yake, wakati anajaribu kusafisha uchafu ulio nje bila mwisho.
ਅੰਧਾ ਭੂਲਿ ਪਇਆ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੇ ॥
anDhaa bhool pa-i-aa jam jaalay.
Being entangled in the fear of death, the spiritually blind goes astray,
Akinaswa katika uoga wa kifo, kipofu wa kiroho anapotoka,
ਵਸਤੁ ਪਰਾਈ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਾਲੇ ॥
vasat paraa-ee apunee kar jaanai ha-umai vich dukh ghaalay.
He considers other’s property as his own, and in egotism, he suffer in pain.
Anafikiria mali ya wengine kuwa yake mwenyewe, na katika ubinafsi, anateseka kwa maumivu.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥
naanak gurmukh ha-umai tutai taa har har naam Dhi-aavai.
O’ Nanak, when the egotism of the Guru’s follower is erased, then he meditates on God’s Name with loving devotion.
Ee Nanak, wakati ubinafsi wa mfuasi wa Guru unafutwa, basi anatafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu kwa kujitolea kwa upendo.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇ ਨਾਮੋ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
naam japay naamo aaraaDhay naamay sukh samaavai. ||2||
He obtains peace by meditating on God’s name with love and devotion.
Anapata amani kwa kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu kwa upendo na kujitolea.

ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
kaa-i-aa hans sanjog mayl milaa-i-aa.
Destiny has brought together and united the body and the soul.
Hatima imeleta pamoja na kuunganisha mwili na roho.
ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਕੀਆ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
tin hee kee-aa vijog jin upaa-i-aa.
He who created them, also separates them.
Yeye aliyewaumba, pia anawatenganisha.
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਭੋਗੇ ਭੋਗੁ ਦੁਖ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
moorakh bhogay bhog dukh sabaa-i-aa
Forsaking God, the fool enjoys the pleasures, which is the root cause of all pains.
Akimwacha Mungu, mpumbavu anafurahia raha, ambayo ni msingi wa maumivu yote.
ਸੁਖਹੁ ਉਠੇ ਰੋਗ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
sukhhu uthay rog paap kamaa-i-aa.
From pleasures, arise diseases and the commission of sins.
Kutoka raha, kunatokea maradhi na kutenda dhambi.
ਹਰਖਹੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਖਪਾਇਆ ॥
harkhahu sog vijog upaa-ay khapaa-i-aa.
From sinful pleasures come sorrow, separation and cycles of birth and death.
Kutoka raha za dhambi kunakuja huzuni, utengano na mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.
ਮੂਰਖ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਇ ਝਗੜਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
moorakh ganat ganaa-ay jhagrhaa paa-i-aa.
The fools try to account for their misdeeds, and argue uselessly.
Wapumbavu wanajaribu kutoa akaunti ya vitendo vya vibaya, na kubishana bure.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਝਗੜੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
satgur hath nibayrh jhagarh chukaa-i-aa.
The judgement (for the strife of births and deaths) is in the Hands of the True Guru, who puts an end to the argument.
Hukumu (kwa ugomvi wa kuzaliwa na kufa kwingi) ipo mikononi mwa Guru wa Kweli, ambaye anatamatisha mabishano hayo.
ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਗੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
kartaa karay so hog na chalai chalaa-i-aa. ||4||
Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. It cannot be changed by anyone’s efforts.
Chochote Muumba anachofanya, kinatendeka. Hakiwezi kubadilishwa kwa jitihada ya yeyote.

The one who seizes the rights of others by deceit, is like an animal that eats dead corpse
Yule anayetwaahaki za wengine kwa ulaghai, ni kama mnyama anayekula maiti iliyokufa.
