ਪਰਬਤੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੀਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੜਾਉ ॥
parbat su-inaa rupaa hovai heeray laal jarhaa-o.
Even if I may own a mountain of gold and silver, studded with jewels and rubies,
Iwapo hata ningemiliki mlima wa dhahabu na fedha, iliyojawa na vito na johari.
ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੧॥
bhee tooNhai salaahnaa aakhan lahai na chaa-o. ||1||
I wish that still I may keep praising You. May my passion for uttering Your praise never die.
Natamani kuendelea kukusifu. Naomba hamu yangu ya kutamka sifa zako isiwahi kufa.

bhaar athaarah mayvaa hovai garurhaa ho-ay su-aa-o.
If all the vegetation turns into fruits and delicious rice.
Iwapo mimea yote ibadilike kuwa matunda na wali tamu.
ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਥਾਉ ॥
chand sooraj du-ay firday rakhee-ahi nihchal hovai thaa-o.
If my abode was to become eternal, and the sun and the moon were put to serve me,
Iwapo makao yangu yangekuwa ya milele, na jua na mwezi ungefanywa kunitumikia,
ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੨॥

even then, O’ God. I may keep praising You, and my longing for uttering Your praises may never decrease.

If my body were afflicted with pain, under the evil influence of unlucky stars;
Iwapo mwili wangu ungeteseka kwa uchungu, chini ya ushawishi mbaya wa nyota zisizo na bahati nzuri;
ਰਤੁ ਪੀਣੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਸਿਰੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਪੈ ਭਾਉ ॥
rat peenay raajay sirai upar rakhee-ahi ayvai jaapai bhaa-o.
and the cruel kings are after my head, still I wish that I may feel Your love.
Na wafalme waovu wanataka kuniangamiza, bado ningetamani kuweza kuhisi upendo wako.
ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੩॥

Even if I may have no clothes to save myself from the extremes of weather, and I have nothing to eat except air.
Hata iwapo sina mavazi ya kujiokoa kutoka hali ya anga iliyokithiri, na sina chochote cha kula ila hewa.
ਸੁਰਗੈ ਦੀਆ ਮੋਹਣੀਆ ਇਸਤਰੀਆ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭੋ ਜਾਉ ॥
surgai dee-aa mohnee-aa istaree-aa hovan naanak sabho jaa-o.
and even if I had enticing heavenly beauties as my wives, I would still say to myself, O’ Nanak, all these things good or bad are transient.
Na hata iwapo nilikuwa na warembo wanaovutia wa mbinguni kama wake wangu, bado ningejiambia, Ee Nanak, vitu hivi vyote mzuri au mbaya havidumu.
ਭੀ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੪॥
bhee toohai salaahnaa aakhan lahai na chaa-o. ||4||
Even then, I may worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease.
Hata wakati huo, naomba niweze kukuabudu na kukutukuza, na hamu yangu ya kuimba sifa zako haingepungua.

ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਗੈਬਾਨਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ॥
badfailee gaibaanaa khasam na jaan-ee.
The one who secretly does evil deeds does not realize that God is pervading everywhere.
Yule ambaye anatenda vitendo vibaya kisiri hagundui ya kwamba Mungu anaenea kote.
ਸੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ॥
so kahee-ai dayvaanaa aap na pachhaan-ee.
The one who does not recognize one’s own self should be called an idiot.
Yule ambaye hatambui nafsi yake mwenyewe anafaa kuitwa mpumbavu.
ਕਲਹਿ ਬੁਰੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਵਾਦੇ ਖਪੀਐ ॥
kaleh buree sansaar vaaday khapee-ai.
The strife of any kind in the world is bad, one gets consumed in the arguments.
Ugomvi wa aina wowote katika dunia hii ni mbaya, mtu anavama katika mabishano.
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਕਾਰਿ ਭਰਮੇ ਪਚੀਐ ॥
vin naavai vaykaar bharmay pachee-ai.
Without meditating on God’s Name, one is destroyed in vices and doubt.
Bila kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu, mtu anaangamizwa katika maovu na shaka.
ਰਾਹ ਦੋਵੈ ਇਕੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਸਿਝਸੀ ॥
raah dovai ik jaanai so-ee sijhsee.
A human being has two ways to follow in life, the way of the Truth or the way of Falsehood. The one who chooses the way of Truth shall be successful.
Binadamu ana njia mbili za kufuata katika maisha, njia ya Ukweli ama njia ya Udanganyifu. Yule anayechagua njia ya Ukweli atafanikiwa.
ਕੁਫਰ ਗੋਅ ਕੁਫਰਾਣੈ ਪਇਆ ਦਝਸੀ ॥
kufar go-a kufraanai pa-i-aa dajhsee.
One who attaches himself to falsehood will remain suffering.
Yule anayejiambatisha kwa udanganyifu atabaki akiteseka.
ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸੁਬਹਾਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥
sabh dunee-aa sub-haan sach samaa-ee-ai.
The entire world seems pleasing to him, who remains attuned to God’s Name.
Dunia mzima unaonekana kumpendeza, yule ambaye anabaki amemakinikia Jina la Mungu.
ਸਿਝੈ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਵਾਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੯॥
sijhai dar deevaan aap gavaa-ee-ai.||9||
One who eliminates selfishness and conceit is redeemed in God’s Court.

so jeevi-aa jis man vasi-aa so-ay.
Only that person is truly alive, in whose mind dwells God.
Mtu huyo pekee kwa kweli yu hai, ambaye katika akili yake Mungu anaishi.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
naanak avar na jeevai ko-ay.
O’ Nanak, no one else is truly alive.
Ee Nanak, hakuna mwengine ambaye kwa kweli yu hai.
ਜੇ ਜੀਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਲਥੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
jay jeevai pat lathee jaa-ay.
If one merely lives without Naam, shall depart from the world in disgrace.
Iwapo mtu anaishi tu bila Naam, ataondoka duniani humu kwa fedheha.
ਸਭੁ ਹਰਾਮੁ ਜੇਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
sabh haraam jaytaa kichh khaa-ay.
Everything he consumes without remembering God should be considered impure.
Kila kitu anachokula bila kumkumbuka Mungu kinafaa kufikiriwa kuwa najisi.
ਰਾਜਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਲਿ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
raaj rang maal rang.
Infatuated with power and thrilled with wealth,
Akipendezwa na mamlaka na kufurahishwa na utajiri,
ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਨਚੈ ਨੰਗੁ ॥
rang rataa nachai nang.
and indulged in such pleasures, he dances shamelessly.
Na akijishughulisha kwa raha kama hizo, anapiga densi bila aibu.
ਨਾਨਕ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
naanak thagi-aa muthaa jaa-ay.
O’ Nanak, he is being deluded and defrauded (out of the life’s objective).
Ee Nanak, amedanganywa na kutendewa ulaghai (kutoka kwa kusudi la maisha).
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੧॥

Without God’s Name, he departs from the world in disgrace

What is the use of eating delicious dishes, and wearing costly clothes,
Kuna manufaa gani ya kula vitoweo vitamu, na kuvaa mavazi ya bei ghali,
ਜਾ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
jaa man naahee sachaa so-ay.
if God does not dwell within the mind?
Iwapo Mungu haishi ndani mwa akili?
ਕਿਆ ਮੇਵਾ ਕਿਆ ਘਿਉ ਗੁੜੁ ਮਿਠਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੈਦਾ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਸੁ ॥
ki-aa mayvaa ki-aa ghi-o gurh mithaa ki-aa maidaa ki-aa maas.
What good are fruits, what good is ghee, sweet jaggery, what good is flour, and what good is meat?
Yana uzuri gani matunda, ina uzuri gani samli, sukari nguuru tamu, una uzuri gani unga, na ina uzuri gani nyama?
ਕਿਆ ਕਪੜੁ ਕਿਆ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸ ॥
ki-aa kaparh ki-aa sayj sukhaalee keejeh bhog bilaas.
What is the use of wearing (fine) clothes and enjoying comfortable beds, and other pleasures and sensual delights ?
Kuna manufaa gani ya kuvaa mavazi (mazuri) na kufurahia vitanda vyenye starehe, na raha nyingine na furaha za kidunia?
ਕਿਆ ਲਸਕਰ ਕਿਆ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਆਵੈ ਮਹਲੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
ki-aa laskar ki-aa nayb khavaasee aavai mahlee vaas.
What good is having an army, sentries, servants and mansions to live in?
Kuna uzuri gani wa kuwa na jeshi, wapigaji vita, watumishi na majumba ya kuishi?
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਭੇ ਟੋਲ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
naanak sachay naam vin sabhay tol vinaas. ||2||
O’ Nanak, without God’s Name, all these show-pieces are a waste.
Ee Nanak, bila Jina la Mungu, maonyesho hayo yote ni bure.

ਜਾਤੀ ਦੈ ਕਿਆ ਹਥਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਖੀਐ ॥
jaatee dai ki-aa hath sach parkhee-ai.
In God’s court, no consideration is given to one’s race or social status. There, one is judged on one’s true merit.
Katika mahakama ya Mungu, hakuna wazo linatolewa kulingana na tabaka au hadhi ya kijamii. Huko, mtu anahukumiwa kwa sifa zake halisi.
ਮਹੁਰਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਥਿ ਮਰੀਐ ਚਖੀਐ ॥
mahuraa hovai hath maree-ai chakhee-ai.
If someone consumes the poison of social status, surely he will face the spiritual death.
Iwapo mtu avame katika sumu ya hadhi ya kijamii, bila shaka anapitia kifo cha kiroho.
ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
sachay kee sirkaar jug jug jaanee-ai.
This Sovereign Rule (justice) of God is known throughout all the ages.
Sheria hii ya kifalme (haki) ya Mungu inajulikana kupitia enzi zote.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਿਰਦਾਰੁ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਬਾਣੀਐ ॥
hukam mannay sirdaar dar deebaanee-ai.
One who obeys God’s Command is honored and respected in His Court.
Yule anayetii Amri ya Mungu anatukuzwa na kuheshimika katika mahakama ya Mungu.
ਫੁਰਮਾਨੀ ਹੈ ਕਾਰ ਖਸਮਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ॥
furmaanee hai kaar khasam pathaa-i-aa.
The Master has sent human beings in the world to carry out His command.
Bwana ametuma binadamu duniani kutekeleza amri yake.
ਤਬਲਬਾਜ ਬੀਚਾਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
tabalbaaj beechaar sabad sunaa-i-aa.
The Guru, (on behalf of God) has conveyed this command through his word.
Guru, (kwa niaba ya Mungu) ametoa amri hii kupitia neno lake.
ਇਕਿ ਹੋਏ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਇਕਨਾ ਸਾਖਤੀ ॥
ik ho-ay asvaar iknaa saakh-tee.
Some have started advancing on the spiritual path, and others are getting ready on their spiritual journey.

some are settling their worldly affairs, while others have proceeded on the path shown by the Guru.

jaa pakaa taa kati-aa rahee so palar vaarh.
When the crop is ripe, it is harvested. Only the straw and the fence remain.
Wakati mmea ni mbivu, unavunwa. Ni matawi na ua pekee inayobaki.
ਸਣੁ ਕੀਸਾਰਾ ਚਿਥਿਆ ਕਣੁ ਲਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਝਾੜਿ ॥
san keesaaraa chithi-aa kan la-i-aa tan jhaarh.
The crop is thrashed and the grains are separated from the husk.
Mmea unapigwa na nafaka kutenganishwa kutoka kwa ganda.
ਦੁਇ ਪੁੜ ਚਕੀ ਜੋੜਿ ਕੈ ਪੀਸਣ ਆਇ ਬਹਿਠੁ ॥
du-ay purh chakee jorh kai peesan aa-ay bahith.
Joining together the two grinding stones, a person sits down to grind the grains.
Akileta pamoja mawe mbili ya kusaga, mtu anakaa chini na kusaga nafaka.
ਜੋ ਦਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਸੁ ਉਬਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਜਬੁ ਡਿਠੁ ॥੧॥
jo dar rahay so ubray naanak ajab dith.||1||
O’ Nanak, I have seen this wonderful play: just as the grains which stick to the central axle escape from being crushed, similarly, those who remain attuned to God are saved from the worldly vices.
Ee Nanak, nimeona mchezo huu wa ajabu: kama vile nafaka inayokwama kwenye ekseli ya kati inahepa kutoka kupondwa, sawia, wale wanaomakinikia Mungu wanakombolewa kutoka maovu ya kidunia.

vaykh je mithaa kati-aa kat kut baDhaa paa-ay.
O’ brother, look how the sugar-cane is cut down, the leaves are chopped off, and it is tied into bundles.
Ee ndugu, angalia jinsi muwa unavyokatwa, majani yanakatwa, na unafungwa katika vifungu.
