ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੀਸਾਣਿ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
sachai sabad neesaan thaak na paa-ee-ai.
We face no obstacle to realize God when we are blessed with the Divine word.
Hatupati kuzuizi chochote cha kumgundua Mungu wakati tumebarikiwa na neno Takatifu.

ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੁਝਿ ਵਖਾਣਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ॥੧੮॥
sach sun bujh vakhaan mahal bulaa-ee-ai. ||18||
We realize God, only when we listen, understand and live a truthful life, we are invited to His presence.
Tunamgundua Mungu, wakati tu tunasikiliza, kuelewa na kuishi maisha ya kikweli, tunaalikwa mbele zake.

ਪਹਿਰਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਹਿਵੈ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
pahiraa agan hivai ghar baaDhaa bhojan saar karaa-ee.
(If I had so much power), that I could wear the clothes of fire, or make my house in snow, and could make steel as my food, (God is still greater).
(Iwapo ningekuwa na nguvu nyingi mno), hadi ningeweza kuvaa mavazi ya moto, ama nitengeze nyumba yangu kwa theluji, na ningefanya chuma iwe chakula changu, (Mungu bado ni mkuu zaidi)

ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਪੀਵਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਹਾਕ ਚਲਾਈ ॥
saglay dookh paanee kar peevaa Dhartee haak chalaa-ee.
And I could easily tolerate all kind of sorrows and pains, and even make everyone on earth obey me.
Ningeweza kuvumilia kwa urahisi aina yote ya huzuni na maumivu, na hata ningeweza kufanya kila mtu duniani anitii.

ਧਰਿ ਤਾਰਾਜੀ ਅੰਬਰੁ ਤੋਲੀ ਪਿਛੈ ਟੰਕੁ ਚੜਾਈ ॥
Dhar taaraajee ambar tolee pichhai tank charhaa-ee.
And if I were to place the entire sky upon a scale and balance it with a single copper coin,
Na iwapo ningeweza kuweka anga nzima kwa mizani na kuisawazisha na sarafu moja ya shaba.

ਏਵਡੁ ਵਧਾ ਮਾਵਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਭਸੈ ਨਥਿ ਚਲਾਈ ॥
ayvad vaDhaa maavaa naahee sabhsai nath chalaa-ee.
and if I were to become so big that I could not be contained, and if I were to control and lead all;
na iwapo ningeweza kuwa mkubwa mno hadi singeweza kudhibitiwa, na iwapo ningedhibiti na kuongoza vyote;

ਏਤਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਰੀ ਭਿ ਆਖਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
aytaa taan hovai man andar karee bhe aakh karaa-ee.
If I were to possess so much power within my mind that I could do and get done whatever I wish.
Iwapo ningekuwa nimiliki nguvu nyingi mno akilini mwangu hadi ningeweza kutenda na kufanya chochote ninachotaka kitendeke.

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਤੇਵਡ ਦਾਤੀ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
jayvad saahib tayvad daatee day day karay rajaa-ee,
As Great as our Master is, so great are His gifts. Even if He gives me more of these gifts or powers, yet this would all be in vain.
Vile Bwana wetu alivyo mkuu, tuzo zake ni kuu mno. Hata iwapo ananipa zaidi ya tuzo hizi na nguvu, bado yote hii itakuwa bure.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਉਪਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥
naanak nadar karay jis upar sach naam vadi-aa-ee. ||1||
O’ Nanak, he who comes under His grace, receives the everlasting glory through His Name (which is the greatest gift compared to all the power of).
Ee Nanak, yule anayepata neema yake, anapokea utukufu wa milele kupitia Jina lake (ambalo ni tuzo kuu likilinganishwa na mamlaka yote ya).

ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਰਜਿਆ ਸੁਨਣਿ ਨ ਰਜੇ ਕੰਨ ॥
aakhan aakh na raji-aa sunan na rajay kann.
Oneis never satisfied, even if one keeps talking endlessly, and one never gets tired of listening to slander.
Mtu kamwe haridhiki, iwapo mtu anazungumza tu bila mwisho, na mtu kamwe hachoki kusikiza kashfa.

ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਰਜੀਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਕ ਇਕ ਵੰਨ ॥
akhee daykh na rajee-aa gun gaahak ik vann.
The eyes are never satisfied (no matter how much beauty they see).Yes, this is the one property of all our senses, that these are never satisfied.
Macho hayaridhishwi (haijalishi kiwango cha uzuri yanachoona). Ndio, hii ndio sifa moja ya hisi zetu zote, ya kwamba kamwe haziridhiki.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਗਲੀ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
bhukhi-aa bhukh na utrai galee bhukh na jaa-ay.
The hunger (desire for worldly wealth) of the hungry is never appeased; by mere words.
Njaa (hamu ya utajiri wa kidunia) ya wenye njaa kamwe haitulizwi; kwa maneno tu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਾ ਰਜੈ ਜਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak bhukhaa taa rajai jaa gun kahi gunee samaa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak,one’s craving for worldly desires is satisfied only when one merges with the Virtuous God by singing His praises.
Ee Nanak, tamaa ya mtu ya hamu za kidunia inaridhishwa tu wakati mtu anaungana na Mungu Mwema kwa kuimba sifa zake.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥
pa-orhee.
Pauree:

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
vin sachay sabh koorh koorh kamaa-ee-ai.
Without the True One, all are false, and all practice falsehood.
Bila yule Mmoja wa Kweli, wote ni waongo, na wote wanatenda udanganyifu.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ਬੰਨਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥
vin sachay koorhi-aar bann chalaa-ee-ai.
Without the True One, the false one is dragged in the bonds of Maya.
Bila yule Mmoja wa Kweli, mtu asiye wa kweli anakokotwa na vifungo vya Maya.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਤਨੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਰਲਾਈਐ ॥
vin sachay tan chhaar chhaar ralaa-ee-ai.
Without the True One, the body is just dust, and it mingles again with dust.
Bila yule Mmoja wa Kweli, mwili ni mchanga tu, na unachanganyika na mchanga tena.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਭ ਭੁਖ ਜਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਖਾਈਐ ॥
vin sachay sabh bhukh je paijhai khaa-ee-ai.
Without the True One, all food and clothes are unsatisfying and increase one’s desires for worldly wealth.
Bila yule Mmoja wa Kweli, vyakula na mavazi yote hayaridhishi na yanaongeza hamu ya mtu ya utajiri wa kidunia.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
vin sachay darbaar koorh na paa-ee-ai.
Without meditating on God’s Name, all other efforts are false, and one cannot obtain to His court through them.
Bila kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu, jitihada yote nyingine sio ya kweli, na mtu hawezi kufikia mahakama Yake kupitia hizo.

ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥
koorhai laalach lag mahal khu-aa-ee-ai.
Being attached to false greed, the opportunity to realize God is lost.
Kwa kujiambatisha kwa tamaa isiyo ya kweli, fursa ya kumgundua Mungu inapotea.

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਓ ਠਗਿ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥
sabh jag thagi-o thag aa-ee-ai jaa-ee-ai.
The entire world is deceived (of its opportunity to be united with God) by the deception, and remains in the cycle of birth and death.
Dunia nzima imelaghaiwa (kutoka fursa yake ya kuunganishwa na Mungu) kwa udanganyifu, na inabaki katika mzunguko wa kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥੧੯॥
tan meh tarisnaa ag sabad bujhaa-ee-ai. ||19||
Within the body is the fire of desire; it can be quenched only through the Guru’s word.
Ndani mwa mwili kuna moto ya tamaa; unaweza tu kuzimwa kupitia neno la Guru.

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਰੁਖੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਫੁਲੁ ਫਲ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
naanak gur santokh rukh Dharam ful fal gi-aan.
O’ Nanak, the Guru is like a tree of contentment which yields the flower of righteous conduct, and fruits of divine knowledge.
Ee Nanak, Guru ni kama mti wa kutosheleza unaozaa ua la tabia adilifu, na matunda ya maarifa takatifu.

ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿਆ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਪਕੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ॥
ras rasi-aa hari-aa sadaa pakai karam Dhi-aan.
It always remains green and full of juice (of God’s love). The fruit ripens through virtuous deeds and meditation.
Daima unabaki rangi ya kijani kibichi na unajawa na jusi (ya upendo wa Mungu). Tunda linakomaa kupitia vitendo vyema na kutafakari.

ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਦ ਖਾਦਾ ਲਹੈ ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
pat kay saad khaadaa lahai daanaa kai sir daan. ||1|l
The person who, eats the fruit (follows the Guru’s teaching), enjoys the bliss of union with God. This is the most sublime gift from God.
Mtu ambaye, anakula tunda hilo (kufuata mafundisho ya Guru), anafurahia raha tele ya muungano na Mungu. Hii ni tuzo tukufu zaidi kutoka kwa Mungu.

ਸੁਇਨੇ ਕਾ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਪਤ ਪਰਵਾਲਾ ਫੁਲ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲ ॥
su-inay kaa birakh pat parvaalaa ful javayhar laal.
The Guru is like a tree of gold, with leaves and flowers as precious as coral, jewels and rubies.
Guru ni kama mti wa dhahabu, na majani na maua yenye thamani kama matumbawe, johari na yakuti.

ਤਿਤੁ ਫਲ ਰਤਨ ਲਗਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਖਿਤ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥
tit fal ratan lageh mukh bhaakhit hirdai ridai nihaal.
It bears the fruits (the Guru’s sublime words) as precious as jewels. The Guru’s heart always remain delighted.
Inazaa matunda (maneno tukufu ya Guru) yenye thamani kama johari. Moyo wa Guru daima unabaki umefurahia.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
naanak karam hovai mukh mastak likhi-aa hovai laykh.
O’ Nanak, only the person on whom is God’s grace and in whose destiny it is so ordained,
Ee Nanak, ni kwa mtu pekee ambaye ana neema ya Mungu na ambaye katika hatima yake imeagizwa hivyo.

ਅਠਿਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਪੂਜੈ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥
athisath tirath gur kee charnee poojai sadaa visaykh.
That person humbly serves the Guru (follows the Guru’s teaching), which is holier than all the sixty eight holy places of pilgrimage.
Mtu huyo anatumikia Guru kwa unyenyekevu (kufuata mafundisho ya Guru), ambako ni takatifu kuliko pahali takatifu sitini na nane za hija.

ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਕੋਪੁ ਚਾਰੇ ਨਦੀਆ ਅਗਿ ॥
hans hayt lobh kop chaaray nadee-aa ag.
Cruelty, material attachment, greed and anger are like the four rivers of fire.
Ukatili, viambatisho vya kidunia, tamaa na hasira ni kama mito nne ya moto.

ਪਵਹਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤਰੀਐ ਕਰਮੀ ਲਗਿ ॥੨॥
paveh dajheh naankaa taree-ai karmee lag. ||2||
Those who fall into these are burned. O’ Nanak, only by God’s grace and humbly following the Guru’s teaching, we can swim across these rivers.
Wale wanaoanguka humo ndani wanachomeka. Ee Nanak, ni kwa neema ya Mungu pekee na kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, ndipo tunaweza kuogelea tukivuka mito hii.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥
pa-orhee.
Pauree:

ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਈਐ ॥
jeevdi-aa mar maar na pachhotaa-ee-ai.
(O’ my friend), overcome these evil impulses and your ego while still alive, so that you may not have to regret in the end.
(Ee rafiki wangu), shinda hii misukumo mbaya na ubinafsi wako ukiwa bado upo hai, ndiposa usilazimike kujuta mwishowe.

ਝੂਠਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ॥
jhoothaa ih sansaar kin samjaa-ee-ai.
This world is false (short-lived), but only a few understand this.
Dunia hii siyo ya kweli (haidumu), lakini wachache sana wanaelewa hii.

ਸਚਿ ਨ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਈਐ ॥
sach na Dharay pi-aar DhanDhai Dhaa-ee-ai.
People do not enshrine love for God; they chase after worldly affairs instead.
Watu hawathamini upendo wa Mungu; badala yake wanafuatilia shughuli za kidunia.

ਕਾਲੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਖੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੁਨੀਆਈਐ ॥
kaal buraa khai kaal sir dunee-aa-ee-ai.
The vicious demon of death, who destroys the world, is always hovering over people’s head.
Pepo mbaya wa kifo, anayeangamiza ulimwengu, daima ananing’inia juu ya vichwa vya watu.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਦਾਈਐ ॥
hukmee sir jandaar maaray daa-ee-ai.
According to the divine command, whenever he gets the opportunity, the cruel demon of death strikes everybody.
Kulingana na amri takatifu, wakati wowote anapopata fursa, pepo katili wa kifo anashambulia kila mtu.

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥
aapay day-ay pi-aar man vasaa-ee-ai.
However, if we enshrine God in our mind, then on His own, He blesses us with His love.
Hata hivyo, iwapo tuthamini Mungu akilini mwetu, basi kwa hiari yake anatubariki kwa upendo wake.

ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਚਸਾ ਵਿਲੰਮੁ ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
muhat na chasaa vilamm bharee-ai paa-ee-ai.
Not a moment or an instant’s delay is permitted, when one’s cup of life is full.
Muda hata kidogo wa kusita hauruhusiwi, wakati kikombe cha maisha cha mtu kimejaa.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੨੦॥
gur parsaadee bujh sach samaa-ee-ai.||20||
By Guru’s Grace, one comes to know this fact and merges into Him.
Kwa Neema ya Guru, mtu anakuja kujua ukweli huu na anaunganishwa na Yeye

ਤੁਮੀ ਤੁਮਾ ਵਿਸੁ ਅਕੁ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਨਿਮੁ ਫਲੁ ॥
tumee tumaa vis ak Dhatooraa nim fal.
Bitter melon, swallow-wort, thorn-apple and neem fruit (bitterness),
Tikiti chungu, woti ya kumeza, tufaha yenye miba na tunda la neem (uchungu),

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹੀ ॥
man mukh vaseh tis jis tooN chit na aavhee.
O’ God, the one who, does not remember You, his mind is filled with bitterness and he speaks rudely.
Ee Mungu, yule ambaye, hakukumbuki Wewe, akili yake inajawa na uchungu na anazungumza kwa kiburi.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੰਢਨਿ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ॥੧॥
naanak kahee-ai kis handhan karmaa baahray. ||1||
O’ Nanak, except God, whom shall we tell about these unfortunate people who are wandering around aimlessly.
Ee Nanak, isipokuwa Mungu, tutaambia nani kuhusu hao watu wasio na bahati ambao wanazurura bila mwelekeo.

ਮਤਿ ਪੰਖੇਰੂ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਕਬ ਉਤਮ ਕਬ ਨੀਚ ॥
mat pankhayroo kirat saath kab utam kab neech.
The intellect (mind) is like a bird; on account of its past actions, it is sometimes high (meritorious), and sometimes low (evil).
Akili ni kama ndege; kulingana na vitendo vyake vya awali, wakati mwingine ipo juu (inastahili tuzo) na wakati mwingine ipo chini (yenye uovu).
