ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur prasad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of eternal existence’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death and self revealed. He is realized by the Guru’s grace.
Kuna Mungu mmoja pekee ambaye Jina lake ni ‘wa kuwepo milele’. Yeye ndiye muumba wa ulimwengu, anaenea kote, bila woga, bila chuki, huru kutoka nyakati, amezidi mzunguko wa kuzaliwa na kufa na anajidhihirisha mwenyewe. Anagunduliwa kwa neema ya Guru.
ਭਉ ਮੁਚੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਵਡਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥
bha-o much bhaaraa vadaa tol.
The revered fear of God has the most substance and validity.
Uoga kwa heshima ya Mungu una dutu na uhalali zaidi.
ਮਨ ਮਤਿ ਹਉਲੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
man mat ha-ulee bolay bol.
The intellect guided by one’s own mind is very shallow, and so are the words uttered under its influence.
Uwekevu unaoongozwa kwa akili ya mtu binafsi ni ya juujuu sana, na ndivyo ilivyo maneno yanayotamkwa chini ya ushawishi huo.
ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਚਲੀਐ ਸਹੀਐ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
sir Dhar chalee-ai sahi hai bhaar.
If we walk through the path of life, bearing God’s revered fear in our mind.
Iwapo tutumbee kwa njia ya maisha, tukiweka uoga kwa heshima ya Mungu akilini mwetu.
ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੀ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
nadree karmee gur beechaar. ||1||
Then, by God’s grace the Guru’s teachings become part of our life.
Basi, kwa neema ya Mungu mafundisho ya Guru yanakuwa sehemu ya maisha yetu.
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਲੰਘਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
bhai bin ko-ay na langhas paar.
Without the fear of God, no one can cross over the world-ocean of vices.
Bila uoga wa Mungu, hakuna mtu anaweza kuvuka bahari-dunia ya dhambi.
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhai bha-o raakhi-aa bhaa-ay savaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Only the one, who has embellished one’s life by keeping the revered fear of God in the mind, crosses it.
Ni yule tu, ambaye amepamba maisha yake kwa kuweka uoga kwa heshima ya Mungu akilini, anaivuka.
ਭੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
bhai tan agan bhakhai bhai naal.
With the revered fear of God in mind one always yearns to unite with Him.
Akiwa na hofu kwa heshima ya Mungu akilini mtu anatamani kuungana naye daima.
ਭੈ ਭਉ ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥
bhai bha-o gharhee-ai sabad savaar.
By molding and embellishing our spiritual life through the Guru’s word, we start living our life in the revered fear of God.
Kwa kufinyanga na kupamba maisha yetu ya kiroho kupitia neno la Guru, tunaanza kuishi maisha yetu katika hofu kwa heshima ya Mungu.
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਾੜਤ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚ ॥
bhai bin ghaarhat kach nikach.
The human character which is fashioned without the revered fear of God, is absolutely false,
Silika ya binadamu ambayo imetengenezwa bila hofu kwa heshima ya Mungu, ni ya uongo kabisa.
ਅੰਧਾ ਸਚਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਸਟ ॥੨॥
anDhaa sachaa anDhee sat. ||2||
like a vessel, which has been fashioned in a mold of ignorance with the strokes of ignorance.
Kama chombo, ambacho kimetengenezwa katika ukungu wa ujinga na mikwazo ya ujinga.
ਬੁਧੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥
buDhee baajee upjai chaa-o.
The desire for the worldly drama arises in the mortal’s intellect.
Hamu ya drama ya kidunia inatokea katika akili ya binadamu.
ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਪਵੈ ਨ ਤਾਉ ॥
sahas si-aanap pavai na taa-o.
In spite of thousands of clever ideas, his life is not molded by the fear of God.
Licha ya maelfu ya fikira za uwerevu, maisha yake hayajafinyangwa na hofu ya Mungu.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਵਾਉ ॥
nanak manmukh bolan vaa-o.
O Nanak, the word of the self-willed person is as light (shallow) as wind.
Ee Nanak, neno la mtu mwenye hiari binafsi halina uzito (la juujuu) kama upepo.
ਅੰਧਾ ਅਖਰੁ ਵਾਉ ਦੁਆਉ ॥੩॥੧॥
anDhaa akhar vaa-o du-aa-o. ||3||1||
That ignorant person’s words are worthless and empty, like the wind.
Maneno ya mtu mjinga ni bure na tupu, kama upepo.

ਡਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
dar ghar ghar dar dar dar jaa-ay.
When one has the fear of God in the heart, then any other kind of fear is dispelled.
Wakati mtu ana hofu ya Mungu moyoni, basi aina yoyote nyingine ya uoga unaondolewa.
ਸੋ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
so dar kayhaa jit dar dar paa-ay.
What is the use of having the kind of fear, which makes one increasingly afraid of other fears in life?
Kuna manufaa gani ya kuwa na aina hiyo ya uoga, ambayo inafanya mtu awe na hofu zaidi ya woga wengine maishani?
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
tuDh bin doojee naahee jaa-ay.
Without You, one has no other place or support.
Bila Wewe, hakuna mtu ana pahali pengine au msaada wengine.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
jo kichh vartai sabh tayree rajaa-ay. ||1||
Whatever happens is all according to Your Will. ||1||
Chochote kinachofanyika kinatendeka kulingana na Mapenzi yako.
ਡਰੀਐ ਜੇ ਡਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
daree-ai jay dar hovai hor.
One should be afraid of any other kind of fear, if there were truly any other fear except the fear of God.
Mtu anafaa kuogopa aina nyingine yoyote ya uoga, iwapo kwa kweli kuna uoga wengine wowote isipokuwa uoga kwa Mungu.
ਡਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਡਰਣਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dar dar darnaa man kaa sor. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Always living in one fear or the other is nothing but the mind’s own commotion
Kuishi daima katika hofu moja au nyingine sio chochote ila vurugu ya akili ya mtu binafsi.
ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਡੂਬੈ ਤਰੈ ॥
naa jee-o marai na doobai tarai.
The soul does not die; it neither drown nor swims across the world ocean of vices.
Roho haifi, wala haizami wala kuogelea ikivuka bahari ya kidunia ya dhambi.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
jin kichh kee-aa so kichh karai.
The One who has created this universe does everything.
Yule Mmoja ambaye ameumba ulimwengu huu anafanya kila kitu.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
hukmay aavai hukmay jaa-ay.
By His Command one is born, and by His Command one dies.
Kwa Amri yake mtu anazaliwa, na kwa Amri yake mtu anakufa.
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
aagai paachhai hukam samaa-ay. ||2||
Here and hereafter, His Command is pervading.
Humu na katika dunia itakayofuata, Amri yake inaenea.
ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਆਸਾ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ॥
hans hayt aasaa asmaan.
The mind which has tendencies for violence, attachment, desires and egotism.
Akili ambayo ina mielekeo ya vurugu, viambatisho, tamaa na ubinafsi.
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਭੂਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਨੈ ਸਾਨੁ ॥
tis vich bhookh bahut nai saan.
Also in that mind is the hunger for Maya, like the raging torrent of a wild stream.
Akilini pia kuna njaa ya Maya, kama mfoko unaovuma wa mto mwitu.
ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
bha-o khaanaa peenaa aaDhaar.
Let the revered fear of God be the spiritual food, drink and support.
Acha uoga kwa heshima ya Mungu uwe chakula, kinywaji na msaada wa kiroho.
ਵਿਣੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੩॥
vin khaaDhay mar hohi gavaar. ||3||
Without consuming this spiritual food (living in the revered fear of God), these fools perish away.
Bila kula chakula hiki cha kiroho (kuishi katika uoga kwa heshima ya Mungu), wapumbavu hao wanaangamia.
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਇ ॥
jis kaa ko-ay ko-ee ko-ay ko-ay.
The one who has someone else as one’s supporter, that someone rarely proves to be the true supporter in the end.
Yule ambaye ana mtu mwingine kama msaidizi wake, mtu huyo ni nadra sana kujithibitisha kuwa msaidizi wa kweli mwishowe.
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
sabh ko teraa tooN sabhnaa kaa so-ay.
All are Yours and You are the support of all.
Wote ni wako na Wewe ndiwe msaada wa wote.
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
jaa kay jee-a jant Dhan maal.
God, to whom belongs all beings and creatures, wealth and property
Mungu, ambaye viumbe na wanyama wote ni miliki, utajiri na mali yake.
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak aakhan bikham beechaar. ||4||2||
O Nanak, it is so difficult to describe and contemplate Him.
Ee Nanak, ni ngumu sana kumueleza na kutafakari kumhusu.

ਮਾਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥
maataa mat pitaa santokh.
O’ God, for me good intellect is like my mother, and contentment like my father,
Ee Mungu, kwangu uwekevu mzuri ni kama mama yangu, na kutoshelezwa ni kama baba yangu,
ਸਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥੧॥
sat bhaa-ee kar ayhu visaykh. ||1||
I have made truth as my brother, and this is my special family.
Nimefanya ukweli uwe kaka yangu, na hii ndiyo familia yangu maalum.
ਕਹਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
kahnaa hai kichh kahan na jaa-ay.
O’ God, much needs to be said about Your creation, but it cannot be fully described,
Ee Mungu, mengi yanahitaji kusemwa kuhusu uumbaji wako, lakini hauwezi kuelezwa kikamilifu.
ਤਉ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ta-o kudrat keemat nahee paa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
because the worth of Your creation cannot be estimated.
Kwa sababu thamani ya uumbaji wako hauwezi kukadiriwa.
