ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਲੇਹੁ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
kar da-i-aa layho larh laa-ay.
O’ God, bestow mercy and attach me with Your Name,
Ee Mungu, tawaza huruma na uniambatishe kwa Jina Lako,
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥
naankaa naam Dhi-aa-ay. ||1||
so that I, Nanak, may keep meditating on Your Name. ||1||
ili mimi, Nanak, niweze kuendelea kutafakari kuhusu Jina Lako.
ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
deenaa naath da-i-aal mayray su-aamee deenaa naath da-i-aal.
O’ merciful Master of the meek, O’ my merciful Master-God,
Ee Bwana mwenye huruma wa wapole, Ee Bwana-Mungu wangu mwenye huruma,
ਜਾਚਉ ਸੰਤ ਰਵਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaacha-o sant ravaal. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I beg for the most humble service of Your saints. ||1||Pause||
Ninaomba huduma nyenyekevu zaidi ya watakatifu Wako. ||1||Sitisha||
ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੂਪ ॥
sansaar bikhi-aa koop.
This world is like a pit of Maya which is poison for the spiritual life,
Dunia hii ni kama shimo ya Maya ambayo ni sumu ya maisha ya kiroho,
ਤਮ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਮੋਹਤ ਘੂਪ ॥
tam agi-aan mohat ghoop.
because of the utter darkness of spiritual ignorance, I am being enticed by Maya,
kwa sababu ya giza totoro ya ujinga wa kiroho, ninashawishiwa na Maya,
ਗਹਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
geh bhujaa parabh jee layho.
O’ reverend God, please extend Your support and pull me out of this pit of Maya.
Ee Mungu unayeheshimika, ninaomba unyooshe tegemezo yako na univute nje ya shimo hii ya Maya.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਦੇਹੁ ॥
har naam apunaa dayh.
O’ God! please bless me with Your Name.
Ee Mungu! Ninaomba unibariki na Jina Lako.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਠਾਉ ॥
parabh tujh binaa nahee thaa-o.
O’ God, except You, I have no one else to support me,
Ee Mungu, isipokuwa Wewe, sina mwengine yeyote wa kunitegemeza,
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੨॥
naankaa bal bal jaa-o. ||2||
Nanak is dedicated to You for ever. ||2||
Nanak amewekwa wakfu kwako Wewe milele.
ਲੋਭਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧੀ ਦੇਹ ॥
lobh mohi baaDhee dayh.
The human body is in the grip of greed and attachment,
Mwili wa binadamu upo katika mshiko wa tamaa na kiambatisho,
ਬਿਨੁ ਭਜਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਖੇਹ ॥
bin bhajan hovat khayh.
Without remembering You, it is becoming useless like dust.
Bila kukukumbuka Wewe, mwili unakuwa bure kama mchanga.
ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮਹਾ ਭਇਆਨ ॥
jamdoot mahaa bha-i-aan.
The demons of death appear very dreadful to me.
Pepo wa kifo wanaonekana wabaya sana kwangu.
ਚਿਤ ਗੁਪਤ ਕਰਮਹਿ ਜਾਨ ॥
chit gupat karmeh jaan.
Chittar Gupat (conscious and unconscious mind) knows my deeds.
Chittar Gupat (akili iliyo na isiyo na fahamu) anajua vitendo vyangu.
ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਾਖਿ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥
din rain saakh sunaa-ay.
Day and night, they bear witness against me.
Mchanga na usiku, wanapata ushuhuda dhidi yangu.
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਨਾਇ ॥੩॥
naankaa har sarnaa-ay. ||3||
O’ God! Nanak has come to Your refuge. ||3||
Ee Mungu! Nanak amekuja kwa kimbilio chako.
ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨਾ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥
bhai bhanjnaa muraar.
O’ God, the destroyer of dreads,
Ee Mungu, mwangamizi wa hofu,
ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਿ ॥
kar da-i-aa patit uDhaar.
bestow mercy and save me, the sinner, from vices.
Tawaza huruma na uniokoe, mimi mtenda dhambi, kutoka maovu.
ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋਖ ਗਨੇ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
mayray dokh ganay na jaahi.
My sins cannot even be counted.
Dhambi zangu haziwezi hata kuhesabika.
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਤਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
har binaa kateh samaahi.
O’ God! except You, no one can erase these?
Ee Mungu! Isipokuwa Wewe, hakuna mwengine anaweza kuzifuta hizi?
ਗਹਿ ਓਟ ਚਿਤਵੀ ਨਾਥ ॥
geh ot chitvee naath.
O’ my Master! I thought of Your support and seized it.
Ee Bwana wangu! Nilifikiria kuhusu tegemezo Yako na kuichukua.
ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੇ ਰਖੁ ਹਾਥ ॥੪॥
naankaa day rakh haath. ||4||
O’ God! extend Your support and save Nanak from the vices. ||4||
Ee Mungu! Nyoosha tegemezo Yako na uokoe Nanak kutoka kwa maovu.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧੇ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥
har gun niDhay gopaal.
O’ God! the treasure of virtues and the protector of the universe,
Ee Mungu! Hazina ya fadhila na mlinzi wa ulimwengu,
ਸਰਬ ਘਟ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥
sarab ghat partipaal.
O the sustainer of all hearts.
Ee mtunzaji wa mioyo yote.
ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਪਿਆਸ ॥
man pareet darsan pi-aas.
In my mind is a keen desire for Your love and Your blessed vision.
Akilini mwangu kuna hamu kali ya upendo Wako na mwono Wako uliobarikiwa.
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸ ॥
gobind pooran aas.
O’ God of the universe! please fulfill this desire of mine.
Ee Mungu wa ulimwengu! Ninaomba utimize hamu hii yangu.
ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
ik nimakh rahan na jaa-ay.
O’ God! I cannot spiritually survive without You even for a moment.
Ee Mungu! Siwezi kuishi kiroho hata kwa muda mfupi bila Wewe.
ਵਡ ਭਾਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥
vad bhaag naanak paa-ay. ||5||
O’ Nanak, one realizes You only by great good fortune. ||5||
Ee Nanak, mtu anakugundua Wewe kwa bahari nzuri kuu pekee.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਹੋਰ ॥
parabh tujh binaa nahee hor.
O’ God! except for You, there is no one else more dear to me.
Ee Mungu! Isipokuwa Wewe, hakuna yeyote mwengine ambaye ni wa dhati kwangu.
ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਚੰਦ ਚਕੋਰ ॥
man pareet chand chakor.
My mind loves You, as the partridge loves the moon,
Akili yangu inakupenda Wewe, kama kware anavyopenda mwezi,
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨ ਜਲ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
ji-o meen jal si-o hayt.
just as the fish loves the water,
kama vile samaki anavyopenda maji,
ਅਲਿ ਕਮਲ ਭਿੰਨੁ ਨ ਭੇਤੁ ॥
al kamal bhinn na bhayt.
just as the bee and the lotus flower cannot be separated,
kama vile nyuki na ua la yungiyungi hawawezi kutenganishwa,
ਜਿਉ ਚਕਵੀ ਸੂਰਜ ਆਸ ॥
ji-o chakvee sooraj aas.
just as the chakvi bird (shelduck) longs for the sun,
kama vile ndege chakvi (bata-shimo) anatamani jua,
ਨਾਨਕ ਚਰਨ ਪਿਆਸ ॥੬॥
naanak charan pi-aas. ||6||
similarly, O’ God! Nanak has a craving for Your immaculate Name. ||6||
vivyo hivyo, Ee Mungu! Nanak ana hamu ya Jina Lako takatifu.
ਜਿਉ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਭਰਤ ਪਰਾਨ ॥
ji-o tarun bharat paraan.
Just as for a young bride, her husband is dear like her own life,
Kama vile kwa bi harusi kijana, mume wake ni wa dhati kwake kama maisha yake mwenyewe.
ਜਿਉ ਲੋਭੀਐ ਧਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
ji-o lobhee-ai Dhan daan.
as the greedy person becomes happy upon receiving wealth,
kama vile mtu mwenye tamaa anafurahia anapopokea utajiri,
ਜਿਉ ਦੂਧ ਜਲਹਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥
ji-o dooDh jaleh sanjog.
as is the union between milk and water,
kama vile muungano kati ya maziwa na maji,
ਜਿਉ ਮਹਾ ਖੁਧਿਆਰਥ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
ji-o mahaa khuDhi-aarath bhog.
as food is dear to an extremely hungry person,
kama chakula kilivyo cha maana kwa mtu mwenye njaa iliyokithiri.
ਜਿਉ ਮਾਤ ਪੂਤਹਿ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
ji-o maat pooteh hayt.
and as a mother loves her son,
na kama mama anavyompenda mwana wake,
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇਤ ॥੭॥
har simar naanak nayt. ||7||
similarly O’ Nanak, you should always remember God with adoration. ||7||
vivyo hivyo Ee Nanak, daima unafaa kumkumbuka Mungu kwa ibada.
ਜਿਉ ਦੀਪ ਪਤਨ ਪਤੰਗ ॥
ji-o deep patan patang.
As the moth, for its love for flame, falls into the lighted lamp,
Kama vile nondo, kwa upendo wake wa mwali, anaanguka ndani ya karabai iliyowashwa.
ਜਿਉ ਚੋਰੁ ਹਿਰਤ ਨਿਸੰਗ ॥
ji-o chor hirat nisang.
as the thief steals without hesitation,
kama mwizi anavyoiba bila kusita,
ਮੈਗਲਹਿ ਕਾਮੈ ਬੰਧੁ ॥
maiglahi kaamai banDh.
an elephant gets entrapped by his lustful urges,
ndovu ananaswa kutokana na hamu zake za ukware,
ਜਿਉ ਗ੍ਰਸਤ ਬਿਖਈ ਧੰਧੁ ॥
ji-o garsat bikh-ee DhanDh.
a sinner remains entangled in the sinful life,
mtenda dhambi anabaki amenaswa katika maisha yenye dhambi,
ਜਿਉ ਜੂਆਰ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
ji-o joo-aar bisan na jaa-ay.
as the gambler’s addiction does not leave him,
kama uraibu wa mcheza-kamari hauwezi kumuacha,
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੮॥
har naanak ih man laa-ay. ||8||
O’ Nanak, similarly keep this mind of yours attuned to God. ||8||
Ee Nanak, vivyo hivyo weka akili hii yako katika patanisho na Mungu.
ਕੁਰੰਕ ਨਾਦੈ ਨੇਹੁ ॥
kurank naadai nayhu.
Just as a deer loves the sound of the hunter’s bell,
Kama vile kulungu anapenda sauti ya kengele ya mwindaji,
ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੁ ਚਾਹਤ ਮੇਹੁ ॥
chaatrik chaahat mayhu.
and as the song-bird longs for the rain,
na kama ndege wa nyimbo anavyotamani mvua,
ਜਨ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ॥
jan jeevnaa satsang.
similarly God’s devotee likes to live in the company of the holy persons,
vivyo hivyo mtawa wa Mungu anapenda kuishi katika uandamano wa watu watakatifu,
ਗੋਬਿਦੁ ਭਜਨਾ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
gobid bhajnaa rang.
where he lovingly remembers God.
Pale ambapo anamkumbuka Mungu kwa upendo.
ਰਸਨਾ ਬਖਾਨੈ ਨਾਮੁ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸਨ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੯॥
rasnaa bakhaanai naam. naanak darsan daan. ||9||
O’ Nanak, the devotee keeps reciting God’s Name with his tongue and begs for the gift of His blessed vision. ||9||
Ee Nanak, mtawa anaendelea kukariri Jina la Mungu kwa ulimi wake na anaomba thawabu ya mwono Wake uliobarikiwa.
ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਸੁਨਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੇਇ ॥
gun gaa-ay sun likh day-ay.
One who sings, listens and writes about God’s praises and inspires others,
Yule anayeimba, kusikiliza na kuandika kuhusu sifa za Mungu na kuhamasisha wengine kufanya hivyo,
ਸੋ ਸਰਬ ਫਲ ਹਰਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
so sarab fal har lay-ay.
he realizes God, the benefactor of the fruits of all his desires.
Yeye anagundua Mungu, mfadhili wa matunda ya hamu zake zote.
ਕੁਲ ਸਮੂਹ ਕਰਤ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
kul samooh karat uDhaar. sansaar utras paar.
Such a person crosses over the world-ocean of vices and also gets his entire lineage emancipated.
Mtu kama huyo anavuka bahari-dunia ya dhambi na ukoo wake wote pia unakombolewa.
ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਤਾਹਿ ॥ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਹਿ ॥
har charan bohith taahi. mil saaDhsang jas gaahi.
Joining the company of the Guru, those who sing the praises of God, His immaculate Name is like a ship to carry them across the world-ocean of vices.
Kwa kujiunga na uandamano wa Guru, wale wanaoimba sifa za Mungu, Jina Lake takatifu ni kama meli ya kuwabeba na kuwavukisha bahari-dunia ya dhambi.
ਹਰਿ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥੧੦॥੨॥
har paij rakhai muraar. har naanak saran du-aar. ||10||2||
O’ Nanak, they remain in God’s refuge and He protects their honor.||10||2||
Ee Nanak, wanabaki katika kimbilio cha Mungu na yeye analinda staha yao.

ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
Mungu Mmoja wa milele, anayegunduliwa kwa neema ya Guru wa Kweli:
ਏਕਮ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
aykam aykankaar niraalaa.
The first lunar day, there is but one God who is unique,
Siku ya kwanza ya mwezi, kuna Mungu mmoja tu ambaye ni wa kipekee,
ਅਮਰੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਲਾ ॥
amar ajonee jaat na jaalaa.
He is immortal, unborn, beyond any social class and any bonds.
Yeye anaishi milele, hakuzaliwa, amezidi ubaguzi wowote wa kijamii na vifungo vyovyote.
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ॥
agam agochar roop na raykh-i-aa.
He is inaccessible and incomprehensible, He has no form or feature.
Yeye hawezi kufikiwa na hawezi kueleweka, Yeye hana muundo au maumbile yoyote.
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ॥
khojat khojat ghat ghat daykhi-aa.
But after searching Him again and again, He can be seen pervading each and every heart.
Lakini baada ya kumtafuta Yeye tena na tena, Yeye anaweza kuonekana akienea katika kila moyo.
